Don't know if it's true, but word is that Warner Bros. has signed a deal to create two live-action movies based on Akira, with Leonardo DiCaprio helping to produce the films and Akira's creator, Katsuhior Otomo, being on hand as the executive producer.

I've heard that; and frankly, I don't know what to think about it. Depending on the runtimes of each film, however, there's the distinct possibility that far more scenes in the manga will be represented in full, making the story as a whole easier. The Akira anime film was an achievement on many levels and one of the finest crafted anime films I've seen come out of Japan, but it's runtime constricted it. There was definitely a noticable struggle to get every theme in and some story parts had to be completely cut.

DiCaprio's involvement doesn't inspire much faith, but then there's the creator involved. So I don't know. We'll have to see how it goes. Or if it's even made, for that matter.

@ Jaki: The only anime I've seen/heard of on your list is Wolf's Rain, and that's an absolutely beautiful series. I've only got a few DVDs here and there, but the last episode had me in tears, really. The whole plot is fantastic, yet sad.

Gaaahh, you make me want to rewatch what I have and use my av/sig set again. <333

I really want to watch more of that, i've only seen like the first episode.

You should really check out Now and then, Here and there. It's a nice short 13 episode anime(like Spice and wolf, you should check that out too).

Most of those on that list are like 13-26 episodes. I like 'em short, sweet, and to the point.

With DiCaprio on it I either see Tetsuo being a BIG pansy...or somehow climate change will play a part in his evolution.

I heard that they tried to make it live action back in 1989 but given the special effects back then, anime was the only way to go.
I will give this to Akira, the last couple of minutes sorta made me tear up a little bit. I had no idea what had happened but the fact that Kanaeda had lived and Tetsuo spared him and became...a snowflake(?) just sorta go to me. I had to look up what the ending meant but it was still cool. Sorta haunting

Well, that'd fit actually. Tetsuo WAS a big pansy who wished he wasn't. Then he got power and it corrupted him. Then Kaneda got on his awesome bike and a charged his laser.

The last half hour of the film is really where the film starts to require repeated viewings to make sense of. Again, this is because they were trying to create a good adaption of a manga that was absolutely packed with different themes. For what time they had been alloted, they accomplished a lot.

Much of the end was a sort of play on higher conciousness and evolution; forced or otherwise. It's also supposed to be very symbolic, if you caught that. Again, things are clearer in the manga.

The ending was pretty emotional. His abilities and conciousness were ascending and his physical form seemed to be turning into pure energy. In the end, he spares his friend, possibly his only friend.

There's just so much to peel back on that movie. Which is what I think makes it so engaging.

I also think that's what makes it impossible to be made into live action.

OK, now did Tetsuo have these abilities all along or did the encounter with that escapee trigger them? And how?

As I recall, he had something within him that made him special. Those abilities that were latent and not likely to come out on their own. He got access to them after they experimented on him. Once he realized the power he had, he kind of went nuts and got drunk with power.

He actually took over Tokyo for a while in the manga. One of those bits that got cut out.

With proper CGI, I think it could work. Two films could give it a lot more time to be fleshed out than the constricted time given to the anime film. It'd be rough though, but being overseen by the creator gives some credence, considering he also oversaw the anime film adaption.

Wow, there's a lot of series here that I've never even heard of. Looks like my hard drive is going to take on another load.

If you want another recommendation then I suggest Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, if only for the last two episodes.

I've been meaning to watch some of those movies. I should probably check and see if the online rental place has DVD's of them. I particularly want to see Princess Monoke.

Spirited Away, yes. Princess Mononoke, definitely. Howl's MC, eh, not so much.

Well, I trust your opinion Ghetto, but I'll probably watch Howls Moving Castle anyways. A lot of this guys films get a lot of acclaim, and I'm very curious as to see what all the fuss is about.

There's actually a couple anime films I need to see sometime soon. I've seen the true greats like Akira and Ghost in the Shell, now it's time to sift through some other good anime movies.

If your a Akira fan (heh, like I need to guess), then go for Katsuhiro Otomo's second major anime release, Steamboy. Steampunk to the extreme, my friend.

In that case, that film is definitely going on my list. And jumping to damn near the top of it.

OK, just finish cowboy bebop and I got one question. Is Spike Spiegel dead?

Me, cause of my love for happy endings, say no. No he is not dead. I would love to see more of this series. There's "talk" but that's all.

Personally I'd love to see a PREQUEL to see Spike and Jet's early advenures

There is no official answer to that question of yours.

Some fans think he's dead, some say he's not.

What makes people think he's dead are all those injuries he's endured and that fading red stars which was meant to indicate the end of a great warriors journey.

BUT, directly qouting Watanabe, director of Cowboy Bebop,

Shinichirô Watanabe

"I've never officially said that he died. At this point, I can tell you that I'm not sure if he's alive or dead"

So there's currently no answer to your question. But I think everyone would like to believe that he's alive. And hey, it's possible. For one, we've seen Spike endure great deal of injuries before through the series and pull through. And the fading star could simply mean the end of just one journey, not his life.

90% of all the Cowboy Bebops fics I have reads, the author have conjured some plot where Spike did survived.

They talk of more for the series (Watanabe: "Someday...maybe, someday.") , and if they ever do more, that would obviously mean Spike ain't dead cuz there's just no way they'd continue Cowboy Bebop without him.

Watanabe did also say he believed fans would be upset if there was a continuation. The only way I would be upset if the continuation was not up to the standards of the first series. I mean, to me Cowboy Bebop had an epic ending. So it would be tough to pick up from there and deliver something even more epic without having to dissapoint the viewers. Cuz there's a sequel for almost everything now days, most of em haven't been so succesful.

But I would definitley want to see more fo Cowboy Bebop. With no change in the staff team. I would want the same great people who made the first series to create the second one.

I recomend you check out the Manga. There are two actually. One is the orginal manga series and the other is called Shooting Star. And if you haven't seen Knockin' On Heaven's Door, you definitley should check that out as well.
