Manga originating from the U.S. is sometimes called OEL (Original English Language) manga, AmeriManga, I have nothing against people writing/drawing manga in the U.S. I want to be a manga artist too (but be a good one). I don't feel that they have to move to Japan to practice, unless they so desire. The only problem is that manga-ka in Japan have a VERRRY busy schedule where they spend most of their time drawing thumbnails and drafts of their manga pages and are only given 2-7 hours of sleep each night. Saturdays are the only days when the artist is allowed any free time.* I believe we can succeed in drawing the style appropriately with lots of practice. But this doesn't mean that we should be prejudice against OEL manga entirely. There are still good manga-ka in the U.S. like Mark Crilley, for example. He has a Youtube page with videos on how to draw manga. They're amaaazing, go watch them. OEL Manga Pet peeves - The art is "blah" most of the time - The plotlines are cliched and knockoffs of other manga - The names are too American - Most of it, if not all the work has been computerized. I bet half of the artists don't even know how to free-draw their characters. Unless you master at Photoshop, the computer should be restricted to background effects, patterns on clothing, adding texture to surfaces, and adjusting skin tones to the characters. I stickied this for whoever sees this page is interested in writing manga. I'll change this into a tutorial instead of a discussion. Here's a link that points out more flaws in American-based manga http://manga.about.com/b/2009/07/13/anime-expo-2009-7-reasons-why-oel-manga-falters-in-the-u-s.htm I don't exactly agree with everything in this article, but it's interesting. More coming soon... |

I can agree on that. They need to just be there selves and not try to be something they aren't because it will just end up pushing people away from it. |

It's also quite stupid to make a manga adaptation out of a popular book or movie. For example, there's a manga out there of In Odd We Trust by Dean Coonz. >_> |

I got this feeling that they WILL be doing a Twilight manga. >.> There's pretty much a manga for everything now. Well, most of them are called "Cinemanga" and are published by Tokyopop. A couple months ago, Tokyopop gave alway all of its Japanese manga licenses to another company called Kodansha. Nobody knows if they're going to continue selling the manga or not. I completely lost respect for Tokyopop after they did that. |
