Introduction The ultimate goal of any player in The Republic is to attain influence. This can be done though any number of methods, ranging from position-holding to mission-accomplishing, and ultimately yields the greatest power. A single terminology note: IP=Influence Point. Accruing Influence There are several ways to accrue influence. Position-Holding Positions offer the quickest and greatest opportunity to gain influence. Upon election/appointment to an important position, a player gets an automatic boost of a certain amount of influence, as noted below.
Experience Once a player losses his/her position, however, s/he doesn't lose everything. A certain amount of influence is awarded to a player for each month s/he holds a position. The exact amount of influence awarded is noted as following (per real-life month).
Approval Ratings A player's approval rating also factors into his/her influence. The higher a player's approval, the higher his/her influence, as according to the following chart. Approval rating based influence is similar in application to positional influence; while a person holds a certain approval rating, s/he gets a certain number of IPs. If s/he losses that approval rating, however, s/he will lose those IPs.
Election Victories Winning a Presidential Election (or Presidential Primary) also gains a player a certain amount of influence. This amount is dependent upon the percentage a person receives in a certain election. Each 4% a Presidential candidate receives in a General Presidential Election yields 1 IP. Each 8% a Presidential candidate receives in a Primary Presidential election yields 1 IP. Each 10% a Vice-Presidential Candidate receives in the General Election yields 1 IP. Public Actions A player can also receive influence boosts through public actions (IE: leading a powerful special interest group, negotiating a foreign treaty, etcetera). Losing Influence There are two principle ways to lose influence. Retiring (which losses you the positional influence you once held) and scandals (IE: admitting you're an anarcho-communist, being arrested). Uses of Influence Influence has numerous important uses. 1. Its very powerful when it comes to the Regional Legislature Simulation System. Influence allows players to control a certain number of legislators and allows players to purchase legislators for certain votes. 2. Influence has a serious effect on fund raisers. While the majority of Americans don't know whose really running the show in Washington, those who donate money do know, and will be impressed when influential figures show up. 3. Bragging Rights. You'd be surprised how useful it is here. 4. Trading. Influence can be traded freely between players for any reason. Regional Legislature Simulation System The Regional Legislature Simulation System simulates the votes of members of regional legislatures. The members of each regional legislature are divided into the following categories: 1. Two seats in the legislature are the Regional Party Leaders, which are player-controlled. The national parties will decide how their regional party leaders are selected. 2. 20% of the legislators are Party Controlled. Those are seats that are occupied by (simulated) party loyalists. They will always vote as their Regional Party Leader instructs. 3. 20% of the legislators are Admin Controlled. Those are seats that are in battleground districts, and will vote based upon public opinion. Parties can initiate campaigns to sway public opinion, but it is not possible to directly control these legislators. 4. 60% of the legislators are Influenceable. These are legislators that are trying to gain the favor of influential Washington politicians. They will be divided into groups, and each group votes as a bloc. Players can attempt to influence them by bidding Influence Points for them. The person who bids the highest number of influence points decides how the group votes. Representatives are only purchased for a single vote; once that vote is done, they are available for bidding once again. Conclusion The Influence System is highly important and useful. Though it is a little complicated, a bit of study will let any competent player understand it, and make good use of it. |
