Meeting Spot (Lone Tree); Between Aelendak and Odelen

--Enters from Odelen--

Daemmion appeared casually. He surveyed the land around him. To the north, in the distance, he could see Aelendak. In truth, he was still bitter from his defeat, but now was not the time for such thoughts. To achieve diplomatic relations with Weissland... it was unheard of for a necromancer to attempt such things. But he was not like other 'necromancers'.

He walked up to the tree. The Mage Lord would arrive soon.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Boralays made his way towards the lone tree ahead of him. Even from here he could see the figure standing beside it. He checked his horse's speed, he was content to make the enemy wait as long as he felt like before getting there.

Stopping his horse with a pull on the reins, he dismounted and walked calmly towards the necromancer but said nothing.

Daemmion watched the man approach; gradually. Everything about him, his stance, his step, his expression, showed utter contempt for this situation. His hatred for Daemmion was clear and understandable. But it was based on a stereotype.

"I did not force you to come here, you know." he said matter-o-factly as the Mage Lord approached.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Boralays replied brusquely "I had little choice if I wanted to find out what you want to say."

"A ceasefire." said Daemmion directly. "I know that will seem ludicrous to you, but it is the best way to preserve life. It may shock you to learn that I care about preventing further deaths just as you do." He folded his arms and kept his eyes fixed on the Mage Lord, weighing the effect of his words. "What you know, or think you know, of necromancers is far from the truth. We are not monsters; we are men and women with a cause, just like the mages of Weissland. We simply have been dealt a different hand, forced to do things a different way in order to survive. We are not so different."

Boralays said "Your cause is unbalancing the natural order of things. Your cause is anathema to life itself. You say you are not monsters, yet every necromancer I have encountered has been intent on killing innocents and raising an army to conquer and cause more death and destruction. How can I take your words at face value?"

"As I said, Mage Lord, we have been dealt a different hand. Unbalancing the order of life and death is a regrettable outcome of necromancy, but it is not one that many necromancers happily accept. The same can be said for the killing of 'innocents', as you put it. Mages are not born mages in the Defiled Kingdom; they are born necromancers. Few would willingly choose that path, but there is no choice. Within the dark of the Defiled Kingdom, those sensitive to magic are taught to wield necromancy and nothing more so that we may fuel the war machine of that accursed land. The dark masters of the Defiled Kingdom force our hand. To disobey is to invite a fate worse than death, a fate that you in Weissland, with your clear skies and lush grass, cannot hope to comprehend." He paused, again judging the weight of his words. Everything was progressing as he had expected, so far. "I would not expect you to take my words at face value, Mage Lord. Your kind and mine have been at each other's throats for longer than any of us could hope remember. It is only natural for you to want a sign of good will, and I have one in mind. If the ceasefire is granted then I will release the population of Odelen. They are alive and healthy, and have been kept that way."

Boralays said, unsure of the truth of what he was hearing, but perhaps understanding the logic of it "You say there is no choice, but there is always choice. You chose to live as a necromancer, you could have chosen an honourable death in defiance of such evil."

Daemmion smirked and even let out a small laugh. "An honourable death? I said you could not comprehend what it was like in that place, but please, you are merely insulting your own intelligence." His smirk vanished. "You do not, you cannot, hope to grasp what life is like in the Defiled Kingdom. How do you think Drathmor rallied such a mammoth force? He promised us what many desire most; freedom from the Defiled Kingdom, freedom from the smog, the ash, the stench of death. Now I will grant you that necromancy has spawned monsters, necromancers who lose themselves to the lure of power and descend into psychopathic madness. But I am not one of them." He took a step forward and stared the Mage Lord straight in the eye. "All I want is to be free of that place."

Boralays said darkly "Of course, what would a necromancer know of honour. I don't care what Drathmor offered you, it was not his to offer. You invaded Weissland, you attacked us, and now that your master is defeated you will do anything to avoid the same fate."

"Is it so different from your invasion of the White Realm? Your soldiers and commanders followed the Archmage blindly into a conflict you had no right to start, against a nation that had been your proud ally no less. The Dark Lord may have forced your hand, but he also forced ours. I, for one, had no longing to wage war against Weissland. But to defy Drathmor... It was simply not an option. The happiest day in recent years for many of us was when James Castoden slew him. Believe me; I wish the King of Weissland no ill fate. He liberated me and my kind from the grasp of Drathmor." Daemmion turned back and wandered idly to the tree, placing his hand upon it. His ghostly eyes looked back to the Mage Lord. "We have done things... I have done things that I am not proud of. But such were my orders. A soldier does not defy the orders of his commander. The only difference between you and I in war, Mage Lord, is what our commanders ordered us to do. You were ordered to repel the invaders. I was ordered to do... terrible things. How far would you go in the service of your nation? And what compels you to do it? Loyalty? Honour? What compelled me was the fear of the Dark Lord's wrath. And that, I assure you, was a justified fear."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Boralays said "It is very different to the White War. Both sides were tricked into that by the Defiled Kingdom and if Weissland had not invaded the Realm, they would have invaded Weissland. Circumstance, opportunity, and the misinformation and deceit created by the Defiled Kingdom. You say we had no right, well that would be true, if the Defiled Kingdom had not provided both sides with ample reason to believe the other was the aggressor. It is a right to defend oneself when wronged, but if your kind was ever wronged it was by your own leaders, so you are the one who has no right to be here. You are the one who has no right to attack Weissland, claim it's territory as your own, or hold our people hostage."

The mage lord scowled "I can see through your words like looking through glass, you do not want to atone, to live a free life, instead all you want is to assuage your guilt. You want to claim that all the terrible evils you have caused or been party to, are not your fault, that you're not to blame. Well the world doesn't work like that, you cannot wash your hands of your taint, your evil. You ask how far I would go in the service of my nation, the answer is simple as far as is right to do so. That is what Weissland understands, what is right. We know when something goes too far, which is why we came to a peace with the White Realm. Your kind doesn't see a line in the sand, you just raise the bones buried beneath it to take anything and everything you can from others."

Daemmion turned back to face the Mage Lord. He folded his arms across his chest, thinking over what had been said. They had moved away from what he wanted to talk about, but that was not to say that the current line of conversation was not useful.

"I do not seek absolve myself of anything. I accept the path I followed was wrought with bloodshed, but you do not get to dictate to me what is right and what is wrong. Those are concepts defined by culture, defined by up-bringing." He took a purposeful step forward. "Had you seen what I have seen, lived through what I have, then you would have a harder time keeping your pedestal aloft as you call down about what is right and what is wrong! You call your people 'innocent'. You claim that their lives were ruthlessly taken away. Yet do you ever stop to consider that perhaps some of the orcs that Weissland brutally and mercilessly hunt down every day were innocent? Do you ever stop to consider perception, or are you content to remain in the world of 'good' and 'evil', black and white?" He waved his hand dismissively. "And do not fill the air with bloated lies. Do not tell me that you and your kind hunt only those that have already attacked the people of Weissland." He raised a finger to the man, pointing at him and narrowing his eyes. "Our two nations have been at war since their inception, over matters born of intolerance and idiocy! Had the roles been reversed, had the Defiled Kingdom been left weakened, then Weissland would have jumped at the opportunity. And you would have reveled in the slaughter of our people. Your people take for granted the soft ground beneath their feet and the beautiful, rolling landscapes around them. Do not take the high road with me, Mage Lord. You are ill-equipped to walk it."

((Loving this, btw :P ))

((Indeed.))

Jarroth Boralays replied in kind "This is no pedestal, merely my own perspective. You talk about what you have seen and lived through, clearly I do not understand it, but neither do you understand my life. Necromancy is a perversion of life, it is evil, and orcs were created by Kilnor to fight against Aracen, they are evil. Why stop to consider if some orcs are innocent after I have seen the ruins of villages they have left behind, seen the mutilated bodies, the screams of the dying that haunt good men in their sleep. I have seen the women they raped and left for dead, and the old men they have strung up to use as archery targets. You imply my people are not innocent, it's a point of view and this is a world of grey not black and white. Some people are not innocent, there are criminals, there is corruption, but some people are innocent. Men and women whose only desire is to live in peace, and I have seen what orcs and the undead and demons have done to them. I have seen the soldiers of Weissland defending their country and people from the same attackers. I have looked into the eyes of too many family members asking me why their son or daughter, or husband or wife had to die in the Army. You say we take for granted our homeland, you simply take."

Daemmion took a few steps back and leaned on his staff. "The stereotypes you speak of," he began slowly, "the concepts you claim to understand by means of your own 'perspective', the blanket terms that you throw at me..." He looked up at the Mage Lord. "You cannot use such things to define the world. You cannot call the world grey and proclaim all orcs and all necromancy evil. I doubt you know much of the orcs. It is their culture that fuels their blood lust, a culture forced upon them. Just as necromancy is not evil; its masters make it evil. You cannot call the world grey and then proclaim such ignorance. I have seen the evils of Weissland, Mage Lord. I have watched as men, women and children went begging to the base of your great wall, pleading to be let passed, to be free of the Defiled Kingdom. I have seen Weisslanders, safe upon their battlements, use our people for sport. 'The man with the most bodies drinks for free' they would call." He looked around at the country of Weissland. "It is true that we have taken from you. You can blame me, and my servants, for our actions. But can you blame us for our desire?"
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Boralays laughed "You talk of stereotypes and ignorance, yet provide nothing but empty claims that orcs and necromancy are not evil. Your argument is not compelling in light of the evidence I have seen with my own eyes. You have repeatedly claimed that all of this is forced on you, on the orcs, once more your argument is that it is someone else's fault." Addressing the second point he said sadly "From your perspective that might seem like evil, but the Great Wall is the southern border of Weissland and as the sovereign territory of Weissland it is for us to decide who passes into our lands. You already pointed out that our nations have been at war since their inception, and it would be a foolish nation that allowed it's enemies citizens to freely enter it's lands. As for killing people pleading at the wall, I know people who have served on the wall, the regular skirmishes and minor assaults directed at the wall are well known. How can I say for true if these people you talk of were innocents seeking freedom and not enemies attempting infiltration or distraction? If such tragedies occurred they are isolated incidents and things might have changed. The King of Weissland is not a man without compassion, but he will not allow the evils you and your kind have perpetrated on Weissland and it's people. You killed the population of Aelendak and who knows what else you did during the war, there is too much blood and taint on you. We are at war, and your side has committed a great many more attrocities than mine might have. You invaded Weissland, you put civilians to death, and it has been centuries since any Weissland force has gone south of the Great Wall to come into contact with your civilians. I cannot speak for the past, only the present."

Daemmion's brow furrowed. "Empty claims are the best I can do in your eyes. You refuse to even consider that there is more to orcs than wanton blood lust, that much you have made clear. And you misunderstand my argument. As I have said, I do not seek to absolve myself of anything. I know full well the evils that I have committed, that my fellow countrymen have committed. I am, however, trying to give you a picture of what it is like in that place. I am trying to shed some light to you of why my kind are the way that we are. Had you been born in the Defiled Kingdom, Mage Lord, then you would be no better. Do not deny that." His head turned to the north, then scanned the fields behind him, before returning to look at the Mage Lord. "What truly perplexes me, what utterly confounds me, is how you condemn the acts of slaughter committed by the Defiled Kingdom, the way you venomously attack the notion of our soldiers attacking your civilians, but when the roles are reversed you see only justification. You would slay all of my men, and happily, for what they have done. But when I speak of Weisslanders delivering evil upon my people, you are full of only excuses. I know that evil runs deep in the Defiled Kingdom. I know that evil runs deep through many of its people. I know that we who call that place home have done countless things that you would view as evil, and some that I would view as evil. This much I know. This much I admit. But you cannot seem to stop for even a moment to admit or consider that Weissland has, too, done evil to innocents beyond the wall and innocents from the orcish tribes, innocents by both your standards and mine. You can continue to judge me and my kind if you wish, but I promise you that you are too poorly informed to create a full picture. If I was the monster you claim, then I would have butchered the people of Odelen and taken back Aelendak by force! If I was the monster you claim, then I would have no need to stand here and speak with you." He leaned closer. "I did not kill the people of Aelendak."

Daemmion stopped and cleared his throat, pausing for a few moments more before continuing. "We can continue this back and forth if you wish; it is indeed enlightening. But, there remains the reason for my coming here. And I do want to continue that conversation." He sighed. "But, as I have no doubt that you are preparing a trap for me then I must make something clear. The people of Odelen are going to be held hostage until both of the following things happen; I have a truce agreement, bearing the royal seal, and I return safely to Odelen. My acolytes have very specific instructions regarding what is to be done if I do not return." His face softened. "I truly take no pleasure in such malevolent tactics, Mage Lord, believe me. But ultimately I deal in reality, not morality. If this is the hand I must play to ensure my safe return, then so be it." He folded his arms across his chest, keeping his staff in grip. "Once I return, and once I have the truce agreement, the population of Odelen will be released, unharmed."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Boralays shook his head "Supposition, if I had been born in your accursed Defiled Kingdom, if the world was fair, if wishes were gold. I have no time to deal in such, I deal in facts. It is a fact that orcs were created by Kilnor and Kilnor is the root of evil. In all my years I have seen nothing but evil from orcs, the same as all information recorded in Weissland about them, and only seen the capacity for conscience in half-orcs. It has nothing to do with excuses, don't try to transfer your own guilt onto me, it will not work. Perhaps you didn't listen, I have found it a personality flaw in you necromancers, but I said if such things happened they are regretable tragedies but isolated incidents. The Great Wall is a military fortification, if your people go there and refuse to leave when told to, then the consequences are clear. If I travelled into the Defiled Kingdom I not expect to be free from harm for being there. As to the people of Aelendak, if you did not kill them then why did we find the dead? Answer that necromancer! We took the city from you by assault, not a long drawn out siege, and we found no survivors!"

The mage lord tightened his grip on his staff and said "You come to me with terms like those and you expect me to accept them? What strong bargaining position do you think you have? If you had the strength to retake Aelendak you would have done it by now, if you had the strength to hold Odelen without resorting to this meeting you would not be here. You can lie all you want, I won't believe it, the only reason you are here is to try and trick me into agreeing to such terms because you know that when Weissland's Army marches on Odelen you will lose. It is clear you are unwilling to give anything in return for your terms, or you would have asked me for mine by now. You lie about the people of Aelendak, for all I know the people of Odelen are dead or worse by now. Weissland will not bow to the wishes of invaders."

"If you wish to raise the issue of the roots of malevolence, Mage Lord, then I would say to you that it is in the nature of all those who walk this world. No god will change that. And Aelendak's people were slain by Narak'Phel, not by me. It was not my hand that broke the city to the ground. Nor have I slain the people of Odelen. How I can prove this to you will be by our choosing; I can show them to you through a magical conduit and prove my words to be true, or I invite you to send a man to Odelen to see the people with their own eyes. I give you my word that he will not be harmed and will be free to return to you, to confirm what he has seen." He held up his hands submissively. "My word will be of little value to you I know, but there is little more I can offer." He put his hands down again. "What I ask for now, Mage Lord, is a truce agreement that I can be certain Weissland will honour. Whilst this truce is in place, I would ask that I be allowed to meet with someone authorised to debate and agree terms with me. I can offer many things to Weissland, and I will share some simply in exchange for the meeting. I have information that you and your lords will find invaluable. I can give detailed information and insight into the Defiled Kingdom, as well as necromancers still operating within Weissland. I can warn you of threats moving against Weissland that have yet to draw your attention." He shrugged. "And if no terms can be agreed, then I ask that my followers and I be allowed to leave with our lives. I am here, Mage Lord, because I gave my word to those under my command that they would never call the Defiled Kingdom their home again. My word is my bond. I stand before you because of my word and because of my followers. Fear did not lead me here; and this I can promise you. Logic drew me here. If I must die then so be it, but it is better to die free than live in slavery." His face became very serious. "What I offer will be of great value to Weissland. Now, you speak of terms. If you have any then let me hear them. If not, I would ask that you deliver my offer to those able to provide terms to me. My followers and I mean the people of Odelen no harm, Mage Lord. We want no more bloodshed on either side."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

One of the Last Guardians. Suck it.

Boralays cleared his mind, knowing what was to come. He said "I'll give you my terms, the only one's you'll get. Your death for the lives of the soldiers lost reclaiming Aelendak! Your follower's deaths for the lives of all the Weisslanders lost during the war! And as Aracen is my witness the undead will be wiped clean from the soil of Weissland!" Quickly Boralays spoke the words to a spell, and a powerful bolt of magic was hurled at the necromancer, knocking him back first into the nearby tree.

The signal was given, the soldiers knew what to do. Boralays drew his sword as he raised his magical defences.

"If a loyal servant of Weissland is threatened, I will aid him to my dying breath, with every drop of my blood. There are older and more powerful things in the world that have faced me and underestimated my resolve, to their end." - Nathaniel Drakkon

"For what is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger!" - Aeron Damphair, a Song of Ice and Fire.
