"I will see you there," said James, and the spell sphere dissipated. As James turned around, he saw Kassal walking up to him. "Captain," said James. "My Liege," replied Kassal. "I'm placing you in charge of the army," said James. "I am going to Valoruin." Kassal seemed stunned by the order. "Sire, I cannot leave you," he said. "I have sworn an oath." "As your king, I am telling you, I need to go alone," said James. "Take the army back to Asulien." "I cannot, my liege," said Kassal. "I will go with you whether you like it or not." He crossed his arms, and James knew by the look in the man's face that this was not an argument he could win. "Very well," said James. Seeing a soldier walk by, James reached out and tapped him. The soldier immediately turned and saluted, and James said, "Go and find Captain Taron, in the Royal Battalion, 1st Company." "Aye, my liege." "What necessitates this urgent, solo visit to Valoruin?" asked Kassal. "There is a plague demon, working for Krodalis, who laid waste to Amei," said James. "Mordain and Nathaniel Drakkon have tracked the fiend to Valoruin, and Mordain has promised me its destruction at my own hands, for vengeance for my people." Kassal nodded, but said nothing. "Sire," said a familiar voice, and James turned to see Captain Taron walking towards him. "Captain," said James, extending his hand. The two clasped forearms and James said, "Good to see you made it through alright." "You as well, sire," said Taron. Taron was another veteran soldier who had been with James since his initial return to Weissland at the outbreak of the White War, and a good officer who was well-loved and respected by his men. "It was a fine victory today." "Yes it was," said James, although he was not sure he meant the words. "Captain, I have urgent business I must attend to in Valoruin. I am placing you in temporary command of the army and giving you orders to bring them back to Asulien. Once there, refit and give them two days rest, then get back to drilling in the new formation." "Aye, my liege," said Taron. "You are dismissed, Captian," said James. Taron saluted and then turned to go carry out his orders. Turning to Kassal, James said, "Instruct your men to go with the army; you and I will go alone." Kassal quickly sent the word out, and then he and James mounted their horses and began their ride to Valoruin. --Leaving Plains of Nairio-- --Entering Valoruin-- |
