Azzhrak smiled and pressed forward against the failing General. He was aware that the battle was lost, and soon he would make his escape, but first this man's blood would spill upon the ground. He advanced forward, sword in-hand, and fixed his eyes upon the enemy. "The grave beckons." he snarled. With a mighty swing, Azzhrak brought his sword up and then let it fall in an arch towards the man. The blade crashed into the man's right-side, next to his neck, and shredded flesh, bone and organs on its way down, finally stopping just above the man's final handful of ribs. The necromancer lifted his boot and placed it on the man's chest. He pushed the General back with his foot whilst pulling his sword free with both arms. Azzhrak looked down on the man as his final moments flashed before him. "What a justified waste." ((This might be my last post for a week or so, just so you guys know. There's something up with my computer so it just depends how fast I can get it fixed. Hopefully won't be too long.)) |

((Ok, no worries. My activity will probably decrease as the week goes on what with the holiday, so I'll see you whenever you get back. )) As the undead tried a last-ditch attempt to stop the brutally-effective flanking, the Weissland cavalry, whom James had instructed to screen the flanking, did exactly as he had ordered them to, riding between the undead attack and the flank of the Weissland line, losing men but not allowing the integrity of the movement to be threatened by the enemy. James was free to continue his withering assault, driving towards the center of the line with more and more companies. When they neared the center of the line, James ordered a soldier to give the order to bring the third line up. The third line, consisting of the Royal Battalion, would be the death knell for this undead army. Its hardened veterans would sweep over the undead and finish them once and for all, it was only a matter of time. As James fought forward, however, he suddenly saw Mardis fighting the armored necromancer whom James had seen earlier, the leader of the enemy army. Seeing Mardis staggering under the weight of the assault, James tried to fight faster, cutting down whatever undead stood in his way. He was only meters away when the necromancer brought a final crushing blow that drove aside Mardis's weapon and cleaved through his shoulder and chest before kicking Mardis away. "Necromancer!" shouted James as he hacked aside a skeleton, sending bones scattering with the blow. The man turned and looked, and James met him with a steely gaze as he readied himself; James would make him pay for Mardis's death, for the death of all the brave men he had lost today. He began the attack with a few probing strikes, which the necromancer parried. When he was even just a year younger, James would have lost his cool seeing a friend like Mardis killed so close, and would have launched into a flurry of power attacks, leaving himself vulnerable; the Great War and the trials of his kingship, however, had matured him and taught him to control such anger, and his probing strikes showed him that this necromancer was a more skilled opponent than he expected from a magic user. Azzhrak kept his defences up and employed great caution. He knew that he had to be careful with this enemy, for his foe was no stranger to the forces of the Defiled Kingdom. This was James Castoden, the warrior who had felled Drathmor. Azzhrak had little love for Drathmor, but the Dark Lord's power was never in question. If this boy could defeat Drathmor, then his prowess would indeed be great. Azzhrak would need to tread carefully. |

The necromancer was a skilled warrior indeed, noticed James as they continued to fight, and prudent; he was fighting defensively, no doubt looking for a slip-up, a chance to exploit any weakness which James might show on the offensive. James, however, knew it would be deadly to allow himself to get to that point. The necromancer was a good fighter, and it would take some time to wear down his defenses. While James was confident in his own abilities, he also knew that every blow that was parried away or blocked prolonged his assault and drained less from his opponent than it did from himself. Despite his stamina, he would eventually tire, and then the mistakes might come. Knowing that it would be dangerous to get to that point, James decided to give his enemy what he was looking for. He brought his sword around for what appeared to be a mighty strike; he knew the necromancer would parry it away, and hoped that the man would take the bait and try to counterattack. |

There was little Sindrila could do now other than watch her Master's duel with the Weissland leader. The reserves had been thrown in and the Weissland cavalry had moved in to counter them, now it was simple attrition, waiting to see how many enemies the remaining undead army would kill. The Dark Elf warrior ordered a few of the necromancers who were not overly taxed controlling the undead to launch magical attacks against the Weissland cavalry. It would kill a few but at this point it was merely a spiteful parting shot from Sindrila. She waited with the remains of her skeleton cavalry out of range of the enemy bowfire, and called to three necromancers to join them. The only thing which might change the course of this battle would be the outcome of Azzhrak's fight. |

Azzhrak side-stepped and vanished in dust, only to reappear less than a moment later behind James. It was a form of rushing-magic attack. He gave the King a brutal kick to the back of his knee that forced him to the ground, down on his good leg. He swept his blade to strike at his enemy's neck, but James was fast and rolled to the side. Azzhrak cursed under his breath; the attack was supposed to finish James. Now he was back to square one. |

James rolled away from his opponent, leaving the necromancer's sword to slash through nothing but air. As he came up, he brought his elbow up hard behind him, smashing the necromancer's face and drawing blood from his nose. This caused the necromancer to stagger back a few feet and allowed James to assume a fighting stance once again. He immediately went on a controlled, steady assault, leaving his opponent little time to try to recover and mount a counterattack. |

Azzhrak was forced to back away under James's attack. His assault had been a mistake, and the King was more controlled and consistent now. It would take him time to recover, and could well cost him his life. |

James continued his assault, leaving the necromancer almost hapless; the man, however, had a solid defense, and James was having difficulty penetrating it. Seeing a mistake in his opponent's footwork, James suddenly made a feint attack to the right, which the necromancer was quick to block. James, however, put all of his strength into coming back across the necromancer against his enemy's blade. The counterattack knocked the necromancer's weapon aside and left the man's body open. In one fluid motion, James spun around halfway and plunged his sword into the necromancer's abdomen. James heard a gutteral noise emit from the man's mouth before spinning back around and, with a sweep of his sword, separating the necromancer's head from his shoulders. The necromancer's headless body collapsed to the ground in a heap, and suddenly, those undead who were still fighting that had been animated by him disintegrated to dust. Breathing heavily from the duel, James watched as his veterans finished off the undead army, cutting down the final skeletons and zombies until there were none more to face. The sounds of battle faded to nothing, and the Weisslanders began to consolidate. |

Sindrila saw it all unfold, the strike for the Weisslander's neck, the miss, the sudden onslaught from the mortal and then the blow which killed Azzhrak. Shocked and upset she yelled "Master no!!!!!" Even as the undead were crumbling she raged, and pitch-black tears burned the dark elf's face. She realised that the Master's mission had to continue and turned quickly to those near her. She yelled "You three with me, the rest of you necromancers, unleash whatever you have left on them, burn them for their impudence!" The necromancers followed her orders even though it would lead to their deaths, they would rather die at the hands of the Weisslanders than the hands of Sindrila. She turned her horse and spurred it north, yelling "With me, we ride north!" The handful of undead cavalry and the three elven necromancers she had selected followed fast on her heels. --Leaving Plains of Nairio-- --Heading for Dunane-- |

Alone, without any undead to aid them, the three remaining necromancers were doomed from the start. While the Weissland battlemages cast counterspells to negate what little they could do, the Weissland cavalry charged, running the three necromancers down within moments. James watched as a group of mounted figures rode north, but waved for the cavalry not to pursue them; they had a head start, and the cavalry was tired and worn as it was. The battle was over; this enemy had been defeated. Looking at a group of Captains who were waiting expectantly for orders, James said, "Consolidate your companies and gather the wounded for treatment back at the camp. Set to work building a funeral pyre for the men." "Aye, my liege," said the Captains before heading off. Due to the threat of necromancy, and the slow realization that belief in Aracen saved one's soul but not their body, it had become standard throughout the army for the dead to be placed on a funeral pyre and burned during a religious service in order to preserve both body and spirit from defilement after death. James looked down at the headless corpse of the necromancer general, and then at the dead body of his friend Mardis, and shook his head in sadness. Mardis had been with him since he first took command of Weissland troops, over a year ago at the onset of the White War; yet another friend fallen at the hands of the undead. As James began to walk back towards the center of the army, he thought about all the men who had died, all the friends that had been lost. He immediately remembered Peloron Galor, the young impetuous captain of the Weissland knights. They had been so alike, and James still mourned the loss of someone who had become like a brother to him in the short time they had spent together. ((Definitely just remembered I had those battlemages with me the whole time and never used them. Fail. ))

((I forgot about my mages too, which is annoying as I wanted to develop them. But oh well.)) Yndalla pushed the last of the undead away from him and took a few steps backwards. He had seen the King vanquish the necromancer; a sense of awe, and relief, had washed over him. "It is over." he said quietly. |

One of the captains approached James and bowed slightly. "My liege, the wounded have been moved back to the camp, and the dead have been laid on the funeral pyre," he said. "What do our casualties look like?" asked James. "Just over five thousand dead, and about the same wounded," said the Captain. "Most of the wounded will survive, though, my Liege." James closed his eyes, pained to hear the news of so many brave men killed, but nodded. "My Liege, we fought excellently today," said the Captain. "We defeated a much larger force, and or casualty numbers are good given that." James nodded again and said, "Thank you, Captain. Have one of the chaplains conduct the funeral rites and lite the pyre." "Right away, my Liege," said the Captain before moving off. "He is right, sire," said Kassal, walking up to him. James had almost forgotten that Kassal had been next to him the entire battle, given the man's quiet stoicism. "Only five thousand dead, perhaps some more from the wounded, is nothing to scoff at given the enemy's size." "I know, Captain," said James. "It never gets easier, though, hearing it. I can always put it out of my mind during the fight, but afterward is a different story. I know it's necessary, and I know those men died well, but I still don't like losing them." Kassal nodded. "The Captains will be conducting roll calls of their men to determine who is dead in order to inform their families." "Very good," said James, pushing the loss of his men from his mind for the moment to deal with business; there would be time to grieve later. "Once the funeral pyres are lit and the rites concluded, we will set up camp and prepare to move back to Asulien." "Aye, my liege," said Kassal. |
