The undead horde continued its ram-shackle advance towards the Weissland line. Azzhrak watched as the archers made their retreat. Out of anger, he struck a few down with his magic but the majority escaped unscathed.

-Bring out the fleshlings. Tear this formation apart-

The large cages seen in the last battle were again brought forward and opened. The fleshlings poured forth and shrieked as they rushed towards the mortals.

Azzhrak smiled as he waited for them to smash into the Weissland line and create entrance points for the rest of the army. Will the Weisslanders never learn?

As the archers moved within the army's formation, James saw that the fleshlings that their enemy had unleashed upon them during the last battle had been brought out once again. The horrific, shrieking things came charging across the battlefield, no doubt intent upon replicating their success in breaking the formation apart as they had previously done. Drawing his sword, James readied himself as several fleshings headed straight for the company he was a part of. With a loud shriek, they were upon the men. James blocked a lunge by one of the creatures with his blade before quickly slashing it across the chest, the Sword of Mhairi cutting a deep wound which felled the creature and allowed James to finish it with a single downward thrust. He turned and cut off the arm of another as it tried to attack him before decapitating it quickly to end its threat. Looking around, James saw that the Weisslander formation had indeed opened up as the enemy no doubt wanted it to, but the Weisslanders alone knew that this had been planned; they were now in their staggered, three-line formation, and while the rear lines finished off what was left of the fleshlings, the first line was ready for the main host of the enemy.

-Kill-

Azzhrak's silent command sent the timeless wave of undead hurtling into the Weissland lines. It would be over soon; the Weisslanders had proven, with their formation, that they were either too stubborn or too stupid to adapt. And that would be their end. Azzhrak merely sat upon his steed and watched. And waited.

The main force of the undead army now swarmed towards the Weisslander lines. Even though his men were all veterans of many battles against the undead at this point, James knew that some men were surely having doubts about the new formation and its tactics, so he shouted, "Men of Weissland, hold this line!" A shout of approval sounded from the men around him as they steeled their shields, spears, and hearts for the wave of skeletons and zombies that was about to hit them.

The mass of undead slammed into the Weisslander first line, attacking the companies from the front while some undead poured through the gaps left in between the companies. Instead of finding the men on the sides of the companies unprepared, however, the undead found men facing outwards, their spears and shields ready to deal with any assaults from these undead who, by instinct and command, sought to exploit what they thought was an advantage. Some of the companies, their men still somewhat wary of the new tactics, did not perform as well as others, taking casualties and trying to slip back into a massive formation with the other companies.

Meanwhile, James's company in the center of the line was faring better than all. With him at the front, they were able to cut down the undead that came at them, beckoning for more enemies to fill the gaps where their undead comrades had been destroyed. James hacked through a zombie as it tried to breach the front of the company, before parrying away a strike from a skeleton. He twisted his blade, turning aside the skeleton's sword, and slashed upwards, cutting the skeleton apart. As he fought with another skeleton and decapitated it, he was glad to hear only the calm voices of orders being shouted, rather than panicked cries of despair, and knew that the plan had worked.

Sindrila was on the right, watching the battle take place. The enemy were holding, and the undead were not making the headway they needed to. She turned to one of the necromancers and ordered him to move up some of their forces from the rear to the front. Moving through the mass of undead came more zombies. Sindrila thought to herself, let's see how they deal with these zombies. On the right the Weisslanders were now faced with a charge of zombies, all of them the dead children from the towns and villages she had raided.

As the battle continued, the Weisslanders on the left flank were suddenly horrified to see amongst their undead adversaries a host of zombie children, freshly dead and reanimated. While experienced and seasoned, not all of the men could stomach the sight or the idea of cutting down the little creatures, and several of them tried to fall back, away from the zombies. Those men who were made of sterner stuff did their duty, cutting down the undead children with ease, but the damage to morale had been done to those companies on the flank.

James cut down another skeleton warrior, and the battle in the middle of the line seemed to reach a lull. Taking a step back, he looked up and down his line to try to get an idea of how the rest of the army was faring. The center and right of the first line was performing well, but the left flank seemed to be buckling. Turning to a sergeant, James said, "Go and get General Mardis; tell him to bring the second line up to replace the first."

"Aye, my liege," said the sergeant, and he disappeared.

Seeking to press the advantage she seemed to be gaining Sindrila led a group of skeleton cavalry to charge into the flank of the left-most company she was targeting. The cavalry struck home, crashing through several of the Weisslanders before the others could move to engage them. Sindrila hacked down at the Weisslanders, exacting a bloody toll on them with her blade.

As the contingent of cavalry hit the Weisslander company, they began to fall back, losing men rapidly as they tried to conduct a fighting retreat. To their rescue, however, came the second line of Weisslander infantry, led by General Mardis. Staggered as they were compared to the first line, the companies of the second line came up in between the companies of the first line, and the undead cavalry, whom just a few moments before had been tearing into the single Weissland company, now found themselves flanked on either side by companies of fresh troops, while the remainder of the company turned to face the skeletons. The Weisslanders pressed in against the skeletons, their now superior numbers and fighting ability turning the tide of the fight and taking away any ability of the cavalry to maneuver their horses to any sort of advantage, turning it into a somewhat lopsided battle.

As the second line of infantry passed between the companies of the first line, James moved out of the company he was with and joined with the company which Mardis was attached to. "How is the left of the line?" asked James.

"Holding and turning the enemy back, now that the second line is up," said Mardis.

"Very good," said James. "We've thrown back the enemy's first assault, but we can't stop; I want the initiative. We are going to counterattack with the second line, and move the third line up past the first to support the second if needed." James motioned and pointed as he told Mardis of his battle plan.

"Aye, my liege," said Mardis with a nod.

Moving to the left and taking a place at the front of one of the fresh companies, James ordered his men forward, beginning the counterattack against the undead army. The Weisslander line moved forward, its men moving at a rapid march, as quickly as possible without losing formation integrity, and regained contact with the main body of the enemy. James hacked his sword through a skeleton warrior before parrying away several strikes from another. A soldier next to James placed a spear through its head, and James returned the favor by slashing apart a skeleton who had tried to take the opportunity to attack the soldier. All along the line, the Weisslanders were faring well, pushing back and reducing the undead army as they fought.

Even with the losses they were suffering Sindrila was not undone by the advance of the Weisslanders. She slashed out, killing another soldier, before preparing her dwindling cavalry. At the signal, two necromancers unleashed spells at the Weisslanders, sending shockwaves of energy directed at the two companies pressing in on either side of the cavalry. Many were pulverised by the attack, or simply knocked down and disorientated. Some of the cavalry were also hit but Sindrila knew there would always be more undead.

Using the space she drew the bulk of her remaining cavalry away and out of danger, leaving some to keep the Weisslanders who had recently fallen back occupied. Sindrila left the undead infantry to pour in and fill the gaps, skeletons and zombies managing to kill some of the injured Weisslanders from the magical attack. The dark elf knew the necromancers would not be able to replicate such an attack, it would have taken too much out of them and those two would have to focus on merely controlling their undead for the remainder of the battle.

As the battle raged, there came a massive burst of light and a thunderclap, and James turned to see a huge magical attack hit the left flank of the army. Whatever it had been that had hit those two companies, James knew it had likely caused significant casualties, if not directly than by the disorientation that surely came with it. Since the battle in the center and right was well in hand for the moment, James shouted to Mardis, "I am going to the left wing of the army! Keep things going here!"

"Understood, sire!" replied Mardis.

Pushing his way back through the company he was in, James quickly made his way down the line behind his men, coming upon the two companies which had been hit by the magical attack. At least a hundred men lay dead from the magic, with several dozen more killed by the weaponry of the undead, and the two companies were haphazardly falling back, trying to regroup. James noticed that the lieutenants of both companies along with many sergeants had been killed in the attack, leaving the men leaderless. Waving his sword in a circle, James ran up behind them, shouting, "Men of Weissland, rally to me!" Inspired by their king coming to their aid, the men of the two companies found their resolve, forming up on either side of James and halting their retreat. James immediately led them back into the fray, cutting his way through the first rank of undead which came against the Weisslanders as the army's line stabilized itself with the solidification of its left flank.

((I wasn't sure exactly how devastating the attack was meant to be, so I hope that's good.))

Azzhrak's temper snapped. He had underestimated the Weisslanders and his army was paying for that. He watched as Sindrilla deployed her own force against the left wing. But that was a drop in the ocean to him as the Weisslanders, for the most-part, through back his undead. The old necromancer climbed down from his steed and advanced towards the thick of the battle. He moved towards the second line, which had only recently joined the fray. Rather, he moved towards a man he had identified as a General, presumably the man in command of this section of the army. Moral provided such a wonderful weakness to mortals, so easy to exploit.

With a mighty swing of his weapon, Azzhrak entered the battle.

James dodged a haphazard swing of a sword by a skeleton, hacking the creature's arm off as he spun out of the way and finishing with a cut through its chest. He then turned and ran his blade through a zombie and slashed upwards, cutting it open from stomach to skull. The army was moving forward well, felling countless zombies and skeleton warriors as they advanced, with their undead foes seemingly at a loss for what to do; James knew this was because the necromancers themselves, the ones who controlled the undead, had no experience fighting against anything but militia or the Weisslander shield wall, and could not figure out anything to do against the new tactics. Even though they had cut down thousands of undead already, however, James knew the battle would be over sooner if they could reach the necromancers, directing their undead minions from the rear of the enemy army. Grabbing a soldier, James said, "Tell the archers to launch volleys over both armies, at the necromancers in the back." The soldier nodded and ran off to fulfill the order. James was sure that the indirect fire of arrows would not actually kill any of the necromancers, but it would provide a distraction from which they would have to defend themselves, taking away from their concentration on directing their forces. All the while, the Weisslanders continued their slow but steady advance through the wave of undead.

The undead were still pushing forward as best they could, but for the most part it was a wasted effort. Enemy archers rained arrows down upon the necromancers, successfully felling a number of undead meat-shields but failing to kill a single necromancers. It did cause the foul sorcerers to break concentration and focus on the arrows, though.

Azzhrak continued onward. He cut a Weisslander in two before parrying attacks from another and killing him with a spell. He had no time for their wasted bravado; he was heading for the General.

As the battle raged on, James could tell that his men were getting closer to victory with every passing minute, though there was still a fight to be had; the undead had taken many casualties, but the necromancers were not giving up yet. The battle was fierce, but the Weisslanders had been able to reduce their enemy to roughly half their starting number over the course of the battle, leaving the two sides now roughly even in numbers. With the undead's numerical superiority gone, the Weisslander's superior skill-at-arms and fighting spirit now proved to be even more of an advantage, as the men were able to outfight their undead foes almost to a man.

In the center of the line, Mardis fought with his sword and shield, blocking a strike from a skeleton before bashing it with his shield, sending its head flying across the battlefield. He saw, however, coming right towards his company, a man wearing a black cloak and heavy spiked armor, wielding a massive two-handed sword and cutting down any who stood in his path. With a look, Mardis knew the necromancer was heading for him, and he turned to face this new foe.

Sindrila knew there was little which could be done now but have the undead fight on tirelessly, something the Weisslanders could not replicate. She ordered her skeleton archers to copy the Weisslanders, firing over the battle in the hopes of distracting the enemies' archers as they were attempting to do with the necromancers. She had withdrawn the remainder of her cavalry to a safe distance where she could observe what was happening, although they numbered just over twenty now that they had been reduced. She watched the battle as it raged, seeing undead cut down in many places but here and there a zombie or skeleton would drag down a flagging soldier, killing them and continuing to fight. Each one was merely another body waiting to join her Master's cause.

Sindrila looked over to see Azzhrak moving to engage one of the enemy leaders, and the dark elf watched with great interest.

As the last distraction fell before him, Azzhrak raised his blade towards the General. The man seemed to be more than aware of the necromancer's approach. Words were not needed; Azzhrak lunged forward and delivered a powerful strike against the man. Though he blocked, the fore of the impact drove him back. But the old necromancer didn't stop. His assault continued instantly, seeming relentless.

Mardis staggered backwards from the blow from the powerful necromancer, his shield arm tingling as the shock traveled up it all the way to his shoulder. He managed to right himself just in time to barely parry away the next swing from his enemy, driving the blade into the dirt and allowing him to step back for a moment and compose himself. His adversary, however, attacked once again, keeping Mardis on the defensive, but Mardis refused to give any more ground, steadying himself and weathering the assault.

On the left of the line, James continued to lead the two companies against the undead. They had cut down a good number, and the right side of the undead army was beginning to fall apart. The troops of the second line, having remained fresh until they replaced the first line, were still at a good level of stamina, and so James decided to keep them in the fight for the moment. With the undead's flank starting to collapse, James saw his opportunity and shouted, "Move to the left!" The companies began to flank around the side of the undead army, disengaging for the moment to allow them space to move. Meanwhile, James signaled to the cavalry who were resting in between the second and third lines, motioning for them to move up and screen the flanking movement from any possible interference from their own flank and rear. At the rear of the formation, the archers had had to disperse somewhat to protect themselves from the volleys of arrows coming from the skeletons, reducing the effectiveness of their attacks on the necromancers. As the cavalry moved up, the companies completed their movement, and James pointed his sword towards the undead flank and shouted, "Charge!" The Weisslanders readied their spears and shields and rushed forward, keeping formation as much as possible, but James knew even a little bit of space at this point was not a bad thing. At the head of his men, he was the first to reach the undead flank, bringing his sword around and slicing through a skeleton warrior before the thing could even try to parry. Around him, the men smashed into the flank, linking back up with the companies on the corner of the line who were still fighting the undead head on. Their spears, with the added force of the charge, impaled many undead at the beginning, but many men in the front ranks lost their spears to this as well, either from breaking or becoming stuck, and so they pulled out their swords and continued to fight. James hacked the arm off another skeleton as it tried to attack him before cutting through its chest, breaking it apart.

Azzhrak continued his assault, but the General refused to give up any more ground. Swing after swing fell upon skilled defences. The necromancer raised his hand and spoke words to an old curse. Shadows drove themselves into the man's mind and gripped him with hallucinations. It was a fear spell, always effective at disrupting the enemy.

Mardis suddenly felt a shadow fill his mind, and imagined that Azzhrak was suddenly flanked by two massive creatures, horrible and deadly-looking. Knowing he could not stand his current ground against three such foes, Mardis began to fall back, swinging his sword out to try to block what attacks came his way from the necromancer and his allies.

Meanwhile, the flanking of the undead army continued. Pressed on two sides by determined Weisslanders, and with the driving force led by the King himself, the undead were being cut down ruthlessly and efficiently. The undead army's right flank was in a state of chaos due to the flanking movement, and the Weisslanders pressed their advantage, rolling up the flank even more and cutting down more of the undead as they pushed towards the center of the line. At the front, James led them, cutting his way through the undead that stood before him.

Sindrila watched with growing anger as the Weisslanders began sweeping down the flanks of the undead. She turned harshly to a nearby necromancer and demanded "Send in whatever reserves you have, get them to assault the Weisslanders rolling up the flanks, anything to slow their momentum."

The necromancer replied worriedly "Yes, Commander."

Sindrila yelled "Now you fool!" She gritted her teeth and looked back at the fight between her Master and the Weissland general, saying "What else can we do, there are no other surprises to throw at them. Nathremal, banshees, anything could have turned the enemy back."
