Azzhrak lifted his blade to decapitate a Weisslanders, before felling two more. He looked behind to see his army approaching but also knew that he would need to buy them time. He had not expected such a quick response from the Weisslanders. Disruption is key. -Summon the harpies- The command was heard in the minds of his necromancers. They set about their work, preparing the summoning ritual. |

The fighting between the two forces was chaotic, devolving into one-on-one combat in the majority of places. The two sides were evenly matched, with the Weisslanders' skill-at-arms matched by the skeleton cavalry's relentlessness and numbers. This was a fight, James knew, however, that they would not be able to win. Eventually, his men would tire or be overwhelmed by the sheer numbers, yet he knew they could not yield yet. "For Weissland!" he shouted above the din, inspiring those men who heard him to fight harder, cutting down their adversaries. James himself swung his sword in an upward arc as he rode towards an enemy, cutting its arm off at the elbow and finishing by slashing through its skull. |

Sindrila weaved right then left, hacking the neck of a Weisslander horse as the enemy went by. She turned her blade backwards and stabbed into the back of the cavalryman even as his horse collapsed beneath him, before withdrawing the weapon and moving further into the battle. |

The undead horde was almost upon the Weisslanders now. But, the Weisslanders in the camp were also mustering themselves at an impressive rate. That would change. -Release the demons- That was Azzhrak's silent command, and his necromancers obeyed. Their spell was complete. A massive column of demonic fire shot from the earth where their ritualistic circle had been. Whilst not as skilled at demonic magic as warlocks, necromancers still knew enough to bring forth some creatures. Harpies were demons from the world beyond. They were not much bigger than, say, four feet tall, but they were viscous. Their skin was grey and their limbs were spindly. Claws sat at the end of their fingers and toes, and bat-like wings adorned their backs. They were blind and hunted by sense of smell and sound. The pillar of fire was in fact a portal from the demonic world. From it, scores of harpies burst forth. They were not powerful but they get the job done. They flew, shrieking, towards the Weissland camp. Some could not contain themselves and descended upon the cavalry, savagely biting and tearing with everything they had. The Weisslanders seemed frightened; the Great War had yielded soldiers that were toughened and experienced against undead, but not demons. Azzhrak grinned and then tore his blade through another foe. |

James heard screaming and shouting coming from the camp, and could only imagine what was going on there now. He wished he could go back there, rally his men, but he knew he could not leave the cavalry. Mardis was a seasoned veteran whom the men loved and trusted; he would be able to get the men into formation in time. He fought on, knocking a skeleton apart with a hefty blow to the chest before cutting another's head off with a deft strike. ----------------------------------- Back at the camp, small, flying demons descended upon the men. They were vicious and erratic in their attacks, but Mardis noticed that they were also easily dispatched by groups of soldiers who had rallied together. Shouting over the noise, Mardis ordered, "Officers and sergeants, get your men into their companies! It will be easier to fight them off!" Hearing their general's orders, some men fell back on their discipline and training, overcoming their fear, while others relied on the sight of their comrades doing their duty and fighting the demons off to steel their courage. Mardis knew they were losing precious time, however, at this disruption, while their King was in harm's way. |

Sindrila laughed as she fought, releasing more emotion in the tumult of battle than at any other time. She plunged her sword hilt-deep into the chest of a charging cavalryman, pulling it free just in time to cross swords with another of the Weisslanders. The man tried to keep up with her furious and agile attacks, but one slip-up let Sindrila knock his sword aside long enough to stab the tip of her blade into his neck, before ripping the weapon sideways and sending a large splatter of blood through the air. |

As James fought, he searched visually for whomever was leading the enemy, and made out two distinct figures who stood out from the undead and Weisslanders: a female dark elf and a human male dressed in heavy armor with a cloak draped over it. He parried a strike from a skeleton rider before sticking his sword into its ribcage and pulling upwards, cutting the skeleton in two. Looking back at the two leaders, James knew they were too far away for him to try to engage. For now he would have to do what he could, he thought as he slashed through a skeletal horse's neck and up into its rider's head with a single stroke, the Sword of Mhairi cutting through the undead bones as if they were butter. |

Azzhrak tore his sword through the air in an upward arc. The blade caught two Weisslanders before unleashing a shock-wave of deathly-green magic. The force through nearby enemies aside and killed one or two more. The old necromancer looked back at the undead army. In mere moments it would smash into the Weisslanders and tear away whatever hope they had of victory. |

((Chadden will have to explain what he means, but I think he means the rest of the undead army is about to hit the Weissland cavalry, which would pretty much overwhelm them. And then it'll be the infantry, undead are pretty much like a steamroller.)) |

((Indeed.)) Seeing the undead army continuing to advance and getting closer with every moment, James knew that it was a race against time for the Weisslander forces to get formed up. He could not see his forces through the darkness, but the screaming and sounds of chaos had fallen silent, and James could only hope that it was because they had fought off whatever ailed them and not because they had been broken. As a skeleton's sword glanced off his own haphazard parry, however, James knew that he had to focus on the task at hand, and that was holding off the enemy for as long as possible. He quickly dispatched the skeleton rider with a slash through its abdomen, cutting it in two and sending its bones scattering. |

Sindrila quickly took stock of the situation as she found herself with a few moments clear of enemies attacking. The undead cavalry had firmly fixed the Weissland cavalry in place although the outcome was not fully realised for either side. The undead infantry were fast approaching and soon the tide of battle would turn rapidly in their favour, short of a miracle on the part of the Weisslanders. She smiled grimly and returned to the fight, riding past an unhorsed Weisslander and slashing him open while he struggled with a skeleton. |

The deathly visage that was the hordes of undead infantry smashed into the Weisslander cavalry, though some of the undead cavalry were lost beneath the advance of the horde. Weisslanders were torn down and ripped apart as the walking dead scrambled and clawed at all they could reach. Azzhrak smiled. The cavalry would need to fall back or be destroyed, and they had precious little time to make their decision. |

As the undead infantry smashed into the cavalry melee, felling both Weisslanders and undead horsemen alike, James knew that there was now no point to keep fighting. The cavalrymen had made their brave stand, and if the infantry were not ready by now, staying here a few extra moments and sacrificing their lives would do nothing to change that. James slashed upwards through a skeleton trooper as he rode by, shouting, "Fall back! Fall back!" Not all of the men could hear him over the din of the battle, but James spotted one of the cavalry's musicians, desperately holding off a skeleton rider. Coming up behind the undead warrior, James prepared to strike, but the skeleton turned at the last moment, parrying James's blow and launching an assault of his own. James parried two strikes before slashing into the skeleton's leg, separating it and causing the rider to lose balance, which allowed James to decapitate it. Turning to the musician, James shouted, "Sound the retreat!" The man nodded and took up his bugle in one hand, blowing into it fiercely with the tune for the retreat. All around, the men who had survived the fierce cavalry battle, no more than half of them, disengaged and began to retreat, riding as fast as their horses would carry them back towards friendly lines. James stayed behind for a few moments, wanting to make sure his men were retreating. As the musician continued to play the retreat, a skeleton suddenly rode up and slashed at him, its crooked sword cutting into the man's jugular and causing a strange, off-tune note to come from the bugle as the musician died mid-tune. At that point, James knew it was time to leave. Slashing his sword through the rider's side and cutting it in two, he wheeled his horse about and rode with his men back to the army. Upon reaching the army, James saw that it was indeed formed up, and was glad; the sacrifice of the cavalry in their delaying action had not been in vain. Riding over to where Mardis was, James quickly dismounted and asked, "Are the men ready?" "Yes, my liege," said Mardis. "We encountered some small, flying demons, but the men were able to deal with them. The formation is ready for the enemy." "Good," said James. "Take the second line; I will take the first." "Are you sure, sire?" asked Mardis. "You're tired. I haven't fought yet; I can lead the first line until you are ready to commit the second." "Thank you, General, but I belong here," said James, looking around at his men, "at the front." Mardis nodded respectfully. "Aye, my liege, very well." He turned and moved quickly back through the gaps in the formation to the second line of companies, while James took his place in the front rank of one of the center companies of the first line. Across the field, the undead infantry swarmed towards them now, and James knew the battle would either be a great triumph or a quick, miserable defeat; all hinged on the new formation, and James hoped it would prove its worth. Looking at the archers who were now arrayed ahead of the front line, James figured they had time for only one volley before they had to move back, or else the undead would overrun them. He nodded to the archer officer nearest to him, who in turn shouted, "Ready! Take aim! Fire!" The archers drew their arrows back and let them go, shooting directly into the front lines of the undead coming at them; the direct fire was much more effective than the old tactic of shooting indirectly, James immediately saw, but its effect would be limited. "Fall them back!" shouted James to the officer, and the archers turned and began to move back into the infantry lines; James only hoped they would reach safety without being run down by some foul trick of the enemy. |
