James twisted his body around as the demon held him, bringing his sword up with one hand and stabbing it into the creature's side with as much force as he could muster, sending the blade almost halfway into the thing's body. The creature dropped James from the suddenness of the attack, and he reeled backwards, the plague festering on his skin, almost burning. Kassal moved up and stepped between the demon and James as the King of Weissland let a shout of pain escape his lips. |

Nhazhan reeled back in agony, fixing his red eyes on the blade embedded in his side. He could feel the righteous magic coursing through his body. He took a firm hold of the blade and tore it free, releasing another roar of pain as he did so. Then, he cast the blade aside and advanced down on the Royal Guardsman, a new fury burning in his eyes. |

Drakkon rose from the ground where the demon had thrown him. He pulled back the hood from his head and rubbed at his cheek where his face had scrapped the ground when he landed, his fingers coming away bloody. Nathaniel left his staff where it lay and picked up his sword. Looking across at the demon he saw it moving on Kassal. The black-clad mage began to speak words of power, summoning a spell, but it would take time. |

James moved quickly to retrieve his blade while Kassal still stood between him and the demon. He looked over and saw Drakkon preparing a spell, and also saw that the guardsmen were attempting to move in and help. Knowing that they would do more harm than good trying to fight the demon, James shouted, "No! Stay back! We will deal with it!" He moved up and took a place next to Kassal, preparing to meet the demon's imminent attack. |

Nhazhan made a broad sweep with his staff, and brought it back to strike James in the head. The King dodged and both men launched an attack against the demon. Nhazhan took careful steps backwards as he swung his staff to block the blades of his enemies. |

James ducked under the powerful sweep of the staff and came up swinging, a short strike that the demon was easily able to block. James proceeded with caution against the creature, unwilling to allow a repeat of the wound he had suffered earlier. He could feel each strike consuming more of his stamina than usual, but his conditioning was keeping him in the fight, continuing to assault the demon with Kassal. |

Nathaniel kept chanting, words as ancient as the oldest trees spilled from his mouth along with blue-tinged smoke, and his eyes glowed with white energy. Still the spell was long and complex, as well as draining. If he was able to complete it he would be unconcious before he saw the results. Hopefully it would provide an opening for the King. The mage continued working, watching the fight playing out ahead of him. |

((Figured I'll just post this, as it could have just been in the previous post. But I'll put it in a seperate post so everyone knows it wasn't there originally.)) As Nathaniel neared the end of the spell everything turned black. His green eyes, whites and all became black orbs, shiny like obsidian. The smoke became thick and black, and it coiled around his arms and whispered along the length of his blade. Even the sky above seemed to darken, like rain clouds covering the sun. Drakkon spat the last word of the spell, unleashing it upon the demon, before the mage slumped to his knees and then his side, unconcious. The spell was an ancient and powerful draining spell, black magic at it's best. Tendrils of black smoke tinged with deep purple wrapped around the demon, becoming more solid like the tenticles of some great sea-beast. They constricted momentarily before vanishing, a visual sign of the spell working. The demon would find it's limbs leaden and slow, it's reactions ungainly, it's muscles weak and tired, and even whatever passed for blood in it's veins would be moving at a glacial pace. The demon's strength would be sapped away, unlikely to be in its entirety due to the ancient power possessed of Krodalis' servants, but hopefully enough to give the King the chance he needed to slay the monster. |

Nhazhan felt his strength fade under the power of the spell. He was surprised that the mage knew such magic, given its origins. His body weakened and his mind became hazed. He stretched his arm up and caught the wrist of the Royal Guard as the man attempted to make a high attack against him. The demon and the guard pushed against one another. With his strength gone, he found that the Royal Guard could now match his physical might. The armour around the man's wrist began to hiss and, very slowly, began to corrode. The process would have been faster, had it not been for the accursed curse now upon him. ----- Mordain moved swiftly down the street. He could see the demon, James, Kassal and Nathaniel. Nathaniel was sprawled on the ground at the back. For a moment, Mordain feared the worst, but he had sensed the spell Nathaniel had used. Losing consciousness was a potential side effect of the ancient incantation. The Mage of Shadows began to build magic in his palm, ready to assault the abomination. |

Kassal struggled to keep his arm up, but the demon's strength was still greater than his own. He kept pushing, however, to give James time to keep attacking. James took the opening in the demon's defenses to make a mortal strike, but the demon still had fight in it; it was able to twist partially out of the way of the attack, and James' blade sliced into the creature's thigh just as Kassal's strength gave out. Kassal was thrown backwards several steps, and James recovered from his strike to try to attack again. |

Nhazhan recoiled back and hissed at the King as what had once been blood dripped onto the ground. He could see Mordain approaching in the background. His time was almost up; against this guard, the King and Mordain, Nhazhan knew he stood no chance. In a move to entice another attack, Nhazhan feigned desperation and lashed out with magic. His attacks were quick, poorly timed and inaccurate, but he wanted to draw an attack from one of his enemies. ((Sorry it took so long to post.)) |

As James felt his strength waning after his attack, he backed away somewhat in order to protect himself from the barrage of magic that was flying out from the demon. Kassal, however, was fresh, and James watched as his Captain of the Guard took an opening in the magic and swung with all his might. As Kassal attacked, James prepared himself to attack as well to make it a two-sided assault.

Nhazhan brought his staff round swiftly, jarring against the royal guard's blade with such force that the man's hand quaked. He grabbed the mortal and spun him round before twisting his sword arm up his back. The man dropped the blade and attempted to work himself free as Nhazhan put his other hand up to the man's face. "The skills of the Weissland Royal Guards are renowned, but when you have existed as long as I have..." Nhazhan ran three of his fingertips across the man's cheek. The Royal Guard screamed as Nhazhan's acid-like touch left brutal scars upon his face. "This man would die for you, King of Weissland, but I have a feeling that you would not allow him to do so. Now, lower-" Nhazhan was suddenly hit by a torrent of dark magic from behind. Mordain stepped from the shadows with his arm outstretched, magic erupting from his hand. The demon was blasted forward and Kassal leapt to safety. "Wretched spawn!" spat Mordain. Nhazhan was left upon the ground, breathing heavily. He rolled over slowly and laughed. "Very good, Weisslanders. But your efforts remain futile." "Finish him, my King." said Mordain. |

James walked up to the demon, who seemed defeated for good. Exhausted from the battle, James raised his sword, but at the last moment, the demon lurched one of its hands up in a desperate last magical attack. James shifted his weight to one side and twisted his body, causing the attack to just barely miss, and swung downward, bringing his holy blade down onto the demon's skull. |

The blade embedded itself in Nhazhan's skull. A putrid liquid ran down his face, yet a sickening and malevolent glint appeared in his eyes. "Your time... d-draws to a close, m-mortals..." He let out a rasping laugh. "A parting gift, p-perhaps?" Nhazhan's body began to shake. Streaks of green energy appeared upon his skin, slowly emanating a dark smog. Mordain could sense the magic and knew what the creature was trying to do. "James!" he exclaimed before pulling the King and Kassal away from the creature. He spoke powerful spell words of Protection. An aura surrounded the three of them, as well as Nathaniel, and a faint barrier spread outward from his staff. "You will all... perish... The a-abomination of life... will f-fail..." Those proved to be the demon's last words. In the next instant, his body erupted and the smog blew forth to wash over everything. Mordain shook as he tried to maintain his protective spell from the foul magic. The nearby City Watch died almost instantly; their flesh rotted in a moment and they fell to the ground. But the smog kept going. It washed through most of the city to infect the un-protected guardsmen with Nhazhan's unique plague. When the torrent finally ended, Mordain fell to his knees and breathed heavily. He looked at the corpses around him and could feel what had happened to the city. |

"That foul smog has ran through the city. My spell has protected we four, but I fear that the unprotected guardsmen who walk the streets will have been exposed. If this is the same plague Nathaniel and I saw in Amei, then it could spread like wild fire and kill hundreds, thousands, maybe more." |

Mordain rose slowly and shook his head. "For now, I cannot say how far it may have spread. But it would be a fair assumption that those within the city will be infected. Whether they feel any different will be no indication. This pestilence is highly advanced. For the good of Weissland, tough decisions may have to be made, my King." |

James nodded slowly, his face stoic yet his emotions in turmoil. The thought of killing innocent men who had done nothing but their duty was horrific to him. Men who joined the army or the various city watches joined knowing they could give their life in defense of their home and country, yet who joined ever wondering if they would be cut down by their own countrymen? On the other hand, however, James could see the plague festering across the countryside, killing thousands in its wake if these men were not...dealt with; even the phrase abhorred James. Looking at Mordain, James asked, "If there is no other option, then I believe we both know what has to be done. But I must ask you this: is there anything else that we can do? Is there any way to quarantine the infected, perhaps find healers to cure them, to stop the spread of infection?" |
