--Enters from Lekath Grasslands--

Mordain had led Wyrillyn and Nathaniel through a twisting path in the mountains. It was narrow at parts and formed from a combination of paths, rocky ledges and wooden bridges, but they finally stood outside Carak Prison. From the outside, almost nothing could be seen of it, for the majority of the prison was constructed within the mountains themselves. A massive stone door was before them. Further up, they could see a wide battlement tower; that was where eagles would land and leave from.

The Mage of Shadows approached the door and banged his staff off the ground, using magic to amplify his voice. "I am Mordain Thaendil. Open the doors to this prison."

Sounds could be heard from within and then, very slowly, the mighty door began to heave open.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Nathaniel stood and watched as the door opened slowly at Mordain's command. He wondered how that door would hold up to the enemy they had faced in the grasslands and at Amei.

When the door was open far enough for them to pass through, a Seeker officer emerged. He saluted Mordain.

"Lord Mordain. We were not expecting you?" he said, somewhat puzzled.

"Well I am here now, and my companions and I are in need of food and shelter." replied the Mage of Shadows, moving past the Seekers towards the door.

"Of course, my Lord."

The officer led Wyrillyn and Nathaniel after Mordain and into the prison. The mighty door swung shut behind them. They stood at the top of a deep staircase that ran down into the earth below. It was lit by torches along the walls. They walked down the stairs for some ten minutes before emerging into a large hall. Doors were along all the walls, leading to different parts of the prison. This room was somewhat of a reception area. It was designed to be an excellent defensive location, whilst also having tables, chairs, even a bar.

"Please, make yourselves at home. I will have some food and ale brought to you." said the officer.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Nathaniel sat down at a table and rested his staff against the table-edge. He said "This place is most impressive."

Mordain took a seat opposite Nathaniel, whilst Wyrillyn moved around the room, looking at... well, no one was quite sure what the old elf was looking at. But everyone stayed out of his way.

"It was constructed long ago, and not initially as a prison. Dwarves built it. But during my cousin's reign, I found this place empty. It did not take long to convert it to the needs of the Seekers." He looked around at the doors, each of which led to corridors that branched off into more corridors and so on. The place was massive; it could quickly become a labyrinth if anyone took it lightly. "The darkest criminals Weissland has ever known are held in these halls."

Nathaniel replied "I meant the criminals who have been killed rather than imprisoned my Lord."

"Ah, of course." replied Mordain.

A Seeker approached with a tray, laden with bread, soup, cheese, a handful of roasted chicken legs and a few mugs of ale. "Here you are, sirs."

Mordain waved a hand to dismiss the man. Hungrily, he picked up the first of the chicken legs and dug his fanged teeth in. The food was welcome; he had not eaten in some time.

"Not as many criminals are executed as the people of Weissland believe though, Nathaniel. If a criminal was set for a private execution, then odds are that they are in fact imprisoned within these walls. A dead criminal can only serve to fuel the ranks of the necromancers. An imprisoned criminal can still prove useful."

Nathaniel took a bowl of soup and a piece of bread. He dunked the bread into the soup and then bit into it, savouring the nourishment. He said "Interesting, although it has been my experience that some criminals cannot be arrested and must die. Traitors like Vanel Rathalie for example." His face darkened at the mention of the name, remembering what the traitor mage lord had done.

((That is the necromancer/mage lord from one of your stories, right?))

Mordain took a swig of ale and another bite of the meat before replying. "I heard of that incident. Lord Boralays told me of your battle against the traitor." Mordain had reconstructed his hood and shroud on the way; after all, the Seekers did not know his true form. Beneath the shroud, his face contorted into one of disgust. "A necromancer under our very noses for so long... It was nothing less than commendable that you and your companions were able to root him out."

((Yeah, from Shining the Light.))

Nathaniel nodded "Thank you my Lord, although I believe we might have died with nobody the wiser if not for the intervention of Boralays and the four other mage lords he brought, and perhaps from my ploy." He ate some more soup before saying "He could not be allowed to live after he was discovered, people learning he was a traitor was bad enough, if certain factions had learned what he had discovered it would have been bad." He lowered his voice to a whisper so only Mordain could hear, even though the Seekers were surely trustworthy "A way to learn necromancy without using it and thus avoiding taint, that information should never fall into the wrong hands or any hands. It was also why I burned his journals rather than hand them over to the mage lords."

Speaking normally again he said "Luckily Marcus, Jessa and I uncovered him and he was defeated."

--Entering from Asulien--

The eagle came gliding in slowly, landing on the wide battlement tower where eagles had been designated for landing. As several Seekers approached, James and Kassal leapt down from the eagle and began walking towards them.

Mordain sighed. "So many texts have been destroyed by hand for the exact same reason. But, many still remain against my wishes. Curiosity can be a terrible burden, and it can indeed carry some the highest penalties."

"Hey, what are you doing?!"

Mordain turned sharply at the sound of a Seeker shouting. He saw two Seekers with Wyrillyn, one restraining the man and the other examining the wall. Mordain walked quickly over to them. "What is going on?"

"This man has been carving something on the wall, my Lord. Look!" said the first Seeker as he gestured to the markings.

Mordain knelt to examine the runes, but they were not any that he recognised.

"Ignorant fools! I must finish my work!" hissed Wyrillyn, seeming to be verging on some sort of break down. His arm twitched violently at his side and his head seemed to be uncontrollably jerking to the right. "Your stone door will not stop him, your mountain walls will not hinder him. Despite all your fortifications and weapons you are useless!" He broke his arm away from the Seeker that held him and dived back down to the wall where he had been carving the runes, etching them with magic from his fingertips. "Do not bring your pawns into this, Mordain. They are useless. This fortress is obsolete against him!"

"What are you doing?" snapped Mordain, grabbing Wyrillyn's shoulder and pulling him back from the wall.

"These runes will save us! He cannot pass them. We will be... safe. I will be safe. Just like I was back in my cell... But then he found me..." Wyrillyn put his hand to his forehead and began wheezing and rasping. "He found me... He found me... I hid for so long, so long, so long... He's coming... He'll never stop... NEVER!" The words were barely recognisable underneath his maddening sounds. He began clawing at the wall again as magic seeped from his fingers. "Must mark runes. Must protect us all. All in the runes. The runes. The runes. The runes."

Mordain rose and the Seekers looked at him. "My Lord?" asked one, clearly confused.

"Leave him be." said Mordain as he turned and headed back for the table.

A Seeker hurried after him. "Lord Mordain."

Slowly, the Mage of Shadows turned to face the man. "Yes?" he asked coldly.

"Well, it's just... what is that old elf talking about?"

"Put it out of your mind, Seeker. The ravings of a mad man are far from your concern." Mordain left it at that and sat back down opposite Nathaniel. He spoke in a hushed voice when he next opened his mouth; "Wyrillyn is terrified. And we need to keep mention of this Krodalis to ourselves. Seekers are brave, but all men have their limits and I do not want theirs tested today."

-----

The Seekers walked quickly over to the King and his guard, after they landed atop the tower that stuck from the top of the mountain.

"My Liege." said the first, bowing before the King.

"Of course, sire. Please, follow us."

The Seekers turned and led their King over to another strong door. It was opened and they entered into a long staircase that wound down into the bowels of the mountain for what seemed like an eternity. After a lot of walking however, they finally arrived in the large room where Mordain and Nathaniel sat.

-----

Mordain looked up to see James enter the room. Respectfully, he rose and waited for the King to reach him.

James walked over to Mordain and noticed that the Watchman Nathaniel was there as well, along with an elf he did not recognize. "Lord Mordian," said James with a weak smile. "It is good to see you."

Mordain looked down at Nathaniel, then over at Wyrillyn before turning back to James. "Very well." He began to move away towards a door but then stopped and waited for James to follow him.
