Xerton wore his elaborate crimson chainmail armour with the silver "V" of Valentinenburg reflecting the radiant light of the clear moon. He was standing on the Great Wall, his relaxed right hand holding his sword at his side and his left hand on a stone merlon - one of the hundreds that made up the battlements of the Great Old Wall. Both armour, blade and merlon were stained with blood. Xerton was staring at the battlefield below, where a couple dozen Domainians were stabbing half-dead beasts and retrieving the corpses of their fallen comrades. The dead bodies were placed on carts that would be dragged back behind the wall so that the brave men could receive a proper burial. The beasts were gathered in large groups and burned. The stench of their rotting corpses were unbearable, so they tried to dispose of as many of them as they could.

Xerton shook his head as he wiped off the blood from his blade with the lower part of his crimson tabard. He then sheathed the sword and sighed. A vicious battle had been fought over the past 20 hours. The beasts were pushing on and on and now they were employing siege engines as well. One of his mages had told Xerton that the beasts were receiving advice and training from werewolves and rogue wizards, but Xerton did not care. What he cared about was that the beasts were getting bolder and stronger and their numbers did not seem to dwindle. The defenders were being thinned out and the morale was so low, many of the officers said it was crawling in the mess of blood and mud that compromised the battlefield to the north of the wall.

Xerton and his two Valentinian guards moved down some stairs towards the officers' quarters in one of the large tower-like fortifications. Depressed and tired, the Valentinian leader wanted to rest, but he could not go to bed before seeing his head sorcerer, Razius Var. This last battle had been close. The wall was battered in many places and they did not have time or ressources to repair them. The soldiers were tired after every fight, yet they needed to be constantly on guard. A few villagers from Bogda and Ferra had volunteered to help repair the wall, but the task was tremendous and what little progress they made, it was sure to be devastated during the next beast attack.

Xerton was far from the only desperate leader at the Old Wall. Many felt that this war could not be won. They wanted to desert the wall and pray that the beasts would not cross the Krempu River. Others, especially Bogdans and Ferrans naturally opposed such opinions. They instead proposed to take offensive action against the beasts, attempt to outflank them and strike at their heart. Some attempted various kinds of voodo magic on the presumed beast leaders, while others sought after ancient destructive spells with which to devastate their inhuman enemies.

Desperate and tired. That was what Xerton was. He needed to speak to Var. Time was running out for the Ancient Domains of Mysteries. Once in his quarters he sent a man to fetch the sorcerer and slumped down in his chair. His head pressed against his temple and his bearded face locked in a frown, the leader of Valentinenburg waited.

((How long has the fighting been going on for, you never answered that in the characters topic?))

Duke Matthew Solarson III was busy going around the groups of his men, checking on them, sharing a few words and keeping their spirits up. He would do this after every battle, even though he was just as tired as everyone else. His large frame could often be seen speaking to groups of soldiers, laughing and telling old stories. His booming voice carried and seemed to have been made for such a purpose as this. The Duke was wearing full armour, stained, dented and dirty from fighting. His large and bushy beard seemed to cover much of his barrel-chest and it was matted and crusted up with sweat and blood. He had a busted lip, which had bled profusely, but had dried and started to scab over now. He would speak to a few others and then return to his quarters for some rest. The crest of Ferra was displayed on his shield, still slung on one arm. His sword, which he used to great effect was in its scabbard, having been cleaned when the battle ended. A ruined sword was no use to anyone, after all.

Razius Var was along at the other end of the wall. He wore a striking, crimson robe, highlighted with golden thread to form a pattern of flames. A dark red cape draped down from his shoulders, where a golden mantle sat. His hair was dark and his eyes sharp. At his side was his sword, as well as a tome that was shackled to his belt.

"Sir, Lord Xerton wishes to speak with you." said a guard.

"Very well." his voice was rough. Razius had not had a luxurious upbringing, as was expected for a mage. His life had left its mark, but he was not a cruel man towards his allies. No, he saved his malice for the enemy.

Razius walked with the guard and entered his Lord's room. "You summoned me, Lord Xerton?"

You know, when Korg was three years old, his mother dressed him up in a pretty little outfit. The result was that he was easily mistaken for a girl.

After doing what he could to raise morale Duke Solarson III returned to his quarters. It was not easy to keep the soldiers in high spirits, this invasion had dragged on, and showed no signs of abating. For the moment he put such thoughts aside and turned his attention to cleaning himself up.

Taking a cloth, Matthew dunked it into a bowl of water before squeezing off the excess. He dabbed it at his lip, cleaning up the dried blood. He thought about what was happening here, the defence against the beasts. They seemed without number, and he wondered if they could be stopped. He was only glad things were going better with his family. Sophia had gone to visit friends in Ahm-Shere before the invasion had begun all those months ago, and he had sent word for her to remain there until the crisis was over. And his two sons were in Ferra overseeing things there, maintaining the peace, making sure the city garrison was staying alert, and so on. Well, mostly Malcolm was doing the work, Jason was as lazy as ever.

"It was a hard-fought battle today, Razius! I don't know how many more of these we will survive!" Xerton tragically declared. "I have something to ask of you. But it must not leave these walls!" Xerton's face was tired, grim and pained. He knew that it was a long shot, but he had to give it a try.

Razius folded his arms across his chest. "And what would that be, my Lord?"

Exhaling deeply again, Xerton spoke, "Use your knowledge, go to the Wizards' Tower! Find scrolls, books, runes! I want you to dig in areas you would never dare touch out of fear and respect. Lose all moral and ethical limitations! Find me the most powerful magic this land can muster! I want to defeat these Beasts! I am ready to pay the ultimate price!"

Once he was done, Xerton could hardly believe he had just uttered these words, yet he did not regret them.

"Can you do this for your Lord, Razius?"

Razius breathed deeply and paced around the room. He turned his back and leaned heavily on the wall. "You ask me to delve into the darkest of things, to look where I swore I would never, to learn that which is forbidden?" Again, he breathed deep before turning back to Xerton. "My Lord, I would do this for no other. But for you, Lord Xerton, for you I will do what you ask. For you, for my land, I will do what I must."

Xerton had his eyes closed. He nodded and said, "Time is of essence, Razius! As for the oaths you must break, I will take upon me the punishment of the gods!" His voice still dripping with pain, Xerton spoke again, "Go now, Razius! Bring me the key to end this!"

Razius bowed slowly. "I will speak of this to no one, my Lord. Your name need not be tarred with these deeds."

With that, the old sorcerer turned and left. He moved quickly down the corridor towards his chamber. He would need to prepare for his departure.

Razius stood in his chambers. He was packing; all the scripts and tomes he had brought with him he would take away with him. None of his magical collection could be allowed to fall into enemy hands. Soon, he would be ready.
