"There's a ship approaching, captain!" one of Thalian's soldiers warned him. "It's a dark elf vessel but it looks like it came from across the channel!" "What of the crew? Dark elves?" "I don't know - it wasn't close enough to see from where I was, but there couldn't have been more than four or five people on board unless more were hiding down below." "Get a company of men waiting for their arrival," Thalian ordered. "Don't let it anywhere near our ships. I will speak to the captain myself." There was a soft humming noise and then a spell sphere entered the room. "Aye, captain," the soldier said with a salute, and left. "This is Elandir," the sphere said. "Lathaon is back and we are going to attack Rathor. Hopefully this should force the dark elves to withdraw. I'll cut off their supply lines." "What do you want me to do? Are there reinforcements coming?" "Don't count on it. Just hold the city as long as you can," Elandir said. "The clouds are low today and the dark elves on the march. It would be a good time to attack from the sky and destroy their war machines and what supplies they have with them." "The situation is desperate, Elandir. Your plan had better work." "Farewell, captain - or is it admiral? - and good luck." With that, the spell sphere dispersed. |

Thalian watched the dark elf ship approach. He had the archers nock arrows. It seemed too strange to be true; the most powerful of the dark elf lords and Arhaina sailing to Edaurn alone. He recognised her despite her dark elven clothes. He realised he was not only puzzled but afraid at why Cyrredlues might dare come here unprotected. Some of the archers were struggling to hold back from shooting Kalon, and he suspected they would be quick to do so if he tried anything. Arhaina dropped the ropes down to the dock and let the men there tie them. She, then Kalon, climbed down out of the ship. She walked in front of him, towards Thalian. "Halt. Drop your weapons," Thalian said. "I will not," Kalon said, "and I suggest you lower your bows if you care for the safety of the Lady Thaendil." "So she is a hostage?" Thalian asked. "She looks like an imposter to me. A dark elf." "She is not and you know this to be true," Kalon said with a hint of anger. "She is tied to me magically so any arrow which strikes one of us strikes both. Your Archmage is back, and I doubt he will be happy with the man who kills his wife." "I have no reason to believe you," Thalian lied. "Drop your weapons or die." "Is this how you treat all your guests?" Kalon mocked, drawing his sword slowly. Arhaina turned round sharply. "What are you doing?!" There were roars in the sky and two great black wyverns dove down from the sky, drawing the fire of the archers and scattering them as they landed and whipped their barbed tails around like flails. "It's a shame it had to come to this," the dark elf said as he headed toward Thalian again. The clouds were still low, and Thalian was not the only one to use that to his advantage. Thalian drew his sword in response and bolt throwers were pushed round, frantically trying to aim at the wyverns as the archers drew their swords and tried to fight them. To the west, the drums of Rathor sounded and the siege of Edaurn began. "Flee while you can," Kalon called to the captain. "You can't win without killing the lady!" Arhaina had drawn her sword now and was already fighting one of the wyverns. |

"What do you hope to gain from this, dark elf?" Thalian spat as Kalon approached him. "Those wyverns will not last long, and if we cannot kill you then we will take you alive." "It is remarkable that your pathetic realm has held this long," the dark elf lord said, ignoring the question and effortlessly cutting down soldiers as they moved to attack him or block his way. "Are you the one holding it together?" "You underestimate high elven spirit. I never asked for this; if I fall then another will step forward," Thalian said, readying himself. That jet-black sword was a viper he was not sure he could repel in time, even well prepared for it. "I do not believe that, but there is no hope for you even so," Kalon replied. Their swords clashed and the captain found himself backing away warily. |

Chisiek watched the conflict from the roof of a building near the docks. More wyverns circled above, and there was a sound of drums to the west. The dark elf army was about to move in for the last battle. Wyverns or not, Kalon was a fool to risk himself in this way. Must have expected Rathor's fleet to have moved in and taken Edaurn by now. Chisiek spoke some words, and dark lightning burst from the sky. It was a perfect strike, coursing through Cyrredlues with a powerful roar... yet he was unharmed. The dark elf mage reached out with his magical senses, and saw two things - the strange and powerful magic of the sword Kalon wielded, and an intense glow around him. He was strengthened, somehow. That was unnatural. Chisiek analysed the possible causes, and slipped away knowing none of them boded well at all for Lord Eradri or the last of the high elves. --- Kaalnor, with the help of one of Lathor's few remaining mages, had made a full recovery. Now, it seemed he was needed already; the drums were beating again and the dark elves marched into artillery range. |
