Bridges; Between Ataya and Aelendak

--Entering from Ataya--

The bridges before them did not seem as intimidating as they had seemed they would be on the map. While there were indeed pallisades and towers, the forces defending them seemed meager, and the defenses were only made of wood. It would not be difficult to break this defense, Aldron thought. Turning to his officers, Aldron said, "Form the men up, archers behind and at the ready."

"Aye, Milord."

The orc leader rounded on his men. "We got the high ground, you maggots, so make it count! Gets your arrows ready!"

The orc archers stood ready and looked at the Weissland force, who stood at the bottom of the slope ascending towards the bridge.

--Enters from Aelendak--

Daemmion had left his horse far away. Now, he formed from dust within a small thicket of trees to observe the battle about to unfold. His presence was unknown; he had little intention of changing that.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Turning to his officers, Aldron said, "Set the fires; order the archers to light their arrows."

"Aye, Milord," they said, and the call went up the line, "Archers! Light your arrows!" Men who knew their jobs quickly ran along the line, pouring a thin line of oil in front of the archers and then lighting it. Then, in unison, the archers pulled out their arrows which had oil-soaked cloth wrapped just beneath the arrowhead, and dipped them momentarily into the fire. The cloth ignited, and the archers raised their flaming arrows to their bows.

"Fire," said Aldron.

"Fire!" shouted the officers, and a volley of four thousand flaming arrows were loosed from the archers' bows. The fiery arrows fell amongst the wooden defenses of the bridge.

The fires leapt up around the defences. Sections of the wall went up in smoke quickly, but the orcs, likewise, were quick to react. They poured buckets of water down to douse the fires.

"Return fire!" roared the orc captain.

The orcs loosed their own arrows. Though their aim was far from what the Weisslanders possessed, the arrows still landed upon the enemy.

-----

From his concealment, Daemmion chanted spell words softly that changed the direction of the wind to favour the orcish arrows and impede those of the Weisslanders.

The Orcs' return fire was scattered, seemingly random in its placement, but while the soldiers were able to block it with their shields, some of the archers fell victim to it.

"Milord, the wind has shifted," said one of the officers to Aldron.

Aldron nodded. "Tell the archers to fire directly; do not loft their arrows."

"Aye, Milord." The word was quickly spread amongst the men, and as the archers raised another set of flaming arrows to their bows, they decreased their angle drastically.

"Fire," said Aldron.

"Fire!" The arrows leapt forward. They would now only hit the front of the defenses, but with their lower and straighter trajectory, the wind would have less effect. The arrows found their mark on the fronts of the wooden defenses, and fires started once more.

((A little golf strategy there. ))

"Keep the fires at bay! And return fire!"

Orcs moved to refill their buckets. The palisades ran down to the bank of the river, and the orcs used them as cover as they fetched more water. But they could not keep this up forever. The fire was still doing damage, weakening the wood with every fresh ignition. Once again, though, the orcs doused the fire. Their archers returned fire, and with the wind now on their side, their arrows were more direct. Whether this was intentional or simply the result of the shifted wind remained to be seen.

"Have the archers continue to fire until our troops are almost there," said Aldron. "Order the soldiers forward."

"Aye, Milord."

The long line of Weisslander troops began to march forward, all stepping off together with their shields up and their spears gleaming in the early morning sunlight. The Orcs would have to make a difficult choice as the troops approached; continue to fight the fire and lose valuable manpower to repel the assault, or commit their forces to the fight and risk burning as well.

Daemmion again began to work his magic. This time, he focussed the wind and breathed new life into the fire at the feet of the Weissland archers. The flames leapt to strike at the soldiers, setting fire to many of their tunics.

-----

The orcs split their forces. The melee fights formed up behind the gate with long spears held forth to drive the Weisslanders back. Behind them stood a number of the archers. Some archers continued to fire from the palisades and a small number were left to do what they could against the fire.

The archers who had their tunics aflame either doused them or stripped the burning pieces away; the wind had been strange today, but luckily the oil fire was stopped from spreading by the green grass and dirt around it. Meanwhile, the Weisslander spearmen were approaching the bridges. There were less than a thousand Orcs behind them, many of them archers, but their fire was somewhat weak and ineffective. The fire began to burn some holes in the Orcs' defenses as the Weisslanders closed in. The soldiers raised their shields to defend against attacks and arrows, and thrust their spears out in front, creating a formidable wall of wood and steel, advancing on the Orcs.

The orc spearmen formed up in four rows, each the width of the gate. With the fires building and the Weisslanders almost ontop of them, the orc archers all formed up behind the spearmen. The spearmen were in a low position, ready to stand up and drive back the Weisslanders when the gate opened. The archers stood ready with their bows trained to deliver a quick death to the first wave of soldiers.

-----

Daemmion watched with interest. He had never expected the defences to last, only to weaken the invasion force. And, more importantly, allow him to see the tactics that his enemies used.

The Weisslander soldiers got closer, their shield wall formation holding strong and appearing formidable as their lines approached the much smaller force of Orcs.

The orcs could do nothing but wait. The fires, for the most part, had been taken care of. Now it was just a matter of waiting for the gate to go down.

((Are your Orcs opening the gate? If so, just go ahead and open it so we can get to fighting. :P Or do I have to break it open or something?))

((Doesn't make much strategical sense to open it, really.))

The Weisslanders reached the gate, and upon reaching it they began pressing against it, the front rank throwing their entire weight behind their shields and smashing into the wood. The gate's hinges, weakened by the fire already, could not take the strain for long, and on the third unanimous shove, the gate fell in and the Weisslanders thrust their spears out into a bristling wall once again. Then, all as one, they moved forward towards the Orcs.

The orcs loosed their arrows, striking the majority of the first wave, not through skill but through numbers. They prepared to fire again as the orc spearmen held strong, refusing to give up their ground.

The majority of the arrows struck into the men's wooden shields, and with that, the Weisslanders were upon the Orcs, thrusting their deadly weapons out from the protection of their shields and engaging the first rank of the enemy. The advantage in training and equipment was evident from the beginning, and almost upon hitting the Orcs, the Weisslanders began to push them back.

The orcs fired again. This time, in the closer range, they scored a good number of killing blows, as well as wounding more. The orcs in the first rank abandonned their spears and threw themselves at the Weisslanders, armed with axes, swords and maces. The disciplined tactical-style combat of the Weisslanders was tested against the brutish, brawling methods of the orcs. They were among the ranks quickly, rendering the Weisslander spears useless. All but the final rank of orc spearmen followed the example, the remaining rank staying put to defend the archers. Even with the numbers advantage of the Weisslanders, the orcs were still doing decently. After all, the gateway only allowed a certain number of enemy soldiers through at a time.

The Weisslanders caught in the midst of the fight impaled some final Orcs with their spears before drawing their swords and engaging the enemy in combat. The narrow chokepoint had become a killing ground for both sides, but while the Orcs tired, the Weisslanders could replace their men with fresh troops, and that combined with their better armor, shields, and weapons, as well as training, was already winning the day. The Orcs were faltering, and within moments, they would break.
