Zuka nodded again. He would start studying magic once this quest was over. It would become his mission to learn and master this power. Zuka wanted to know more. And fast. But he would not betray his comrades and he felt that Mordain would not take kindly to any more inquiries. He just walked on besides the mage, wondering if he would actually surprise the Dragons' current adventure.

Nathaniel moved quickly through the grass, listening as the wind picked up and rustled through the grass around them. A pale sun was rising into the sky, and thin clouds drifted across it. There was a bitter chill to the air, a cold crispness which made it seem sharp. At least it was not snowing, that was one thing which would make their journey easier.

Time had passed quickly that day. The night once more drew near, as did a small wood, in which Mordain hoped to make camp. He moved with purpose towards it.

((I can edit this post if anyone has anything they want to RP for during this day?))
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

((I think its best to move on.))

Nathaniel watched the woods getting closer. They had gone a day without being attacked by anyone but that was no reason to drop his guard.

The Dragons were mostly silent. Some wanted action, others wanted a conclusion to this. Ash quickly ordered them to keep their eyes open as they approached the woods.

The moon was dominating the sky, having banished the sun for now. They reached the woodlands and found a small group of trees where they could set up their camp.

"You will all need to rest again. A day and a half is all it should take us to reach our destination." said Mordain, turning to look out at the grassland.

Nathaniel looked around for a suitable area to rest before asking "How defensible is our destination my lord?"

The Dragons scattered around, surveying the unfamiliar area and having found suitable positions halted and crouched, having formed a semi-circular perimiter around the Weisslanders.

Mordain looked at the Realmers before walking over to Nathaniel and leaning into the man's ear; the Realmers were not yet privy to this information. "We are moving to one of Weissland's greatest strongholds. It is a prison, run by my Seekers and under my authority. It is there that the worst of the worst are held. We send criminals there that we wish to 'disappear'."

Nathaniel whispered back "Very well my lord. But won't this create problems later on, with our allies?" He made sure to keep his voice low enough that only Mordain could hear, and his hooded robe concealed his lips from anyone who might have been watching.

Nathaniel nodded once and went to sit down in the spot he had chosen. It was the practical thing to do, no outsiders could be given such information lightly. And Drakkon was sure they were holding back more than enough secrets of their own, he could tell that. For now, he would rest. He crossed his legs, after putting his pack down and laying his staff across his legs. Closing his eyes Nathaniel took in a deep breath, then slowly released it. Some meditation would be better than letting his guard down completely by sleeping. He was sure that the enemy would make a move soon, and he had quietly raised his own magical defences as a precaution.

Mordain had been standing for what felt like hours, and may well have been. Around him, Nathaniel had entered into meditation, some of the Realmers had drifted off to sleep, others making idle conversation and the like, and Wyrillyn slumbered at the base of a tree. For the briefest of moments, Mordain's eyes closed. When they opened once more, the dark form of Krodalis stood behind Nathaniel, his gaze bearing down on the younger man.

"Nathaniel!" exclaimed Mordain, grabbing his staff and preparing to attack.

But no one moved. No one even acknowledged him. It was... strange.

"Darkness and hate cling to this one, Mordain." said Krodalis, gesturing to Nathaniel as his gaze moved to meet Mordain's. "But deffiance is born of such things."

"You... what have you done?" stammered Mordain, confused. "Am I... dreaming?"

"More of a trance." replied the shade, walking closer.

Mordain took a few cautious steps backwards.

Krodalis, in turn, stopped. "What's this? The great Mordain Thaendil showing fear?"

"What do you want?" snapped Mordain, regaining his composure.

"You know what I want. I want the boy. I want your father. And, I want you." Krodalis moved closer, but then turned to look out across the grassland beyond, cradled by the night and bathed in the glow of the moon. "Your choice to send Kristian away with the monks is only a stall, you know that. If they were to learn that my power lies within him, then perhaps they would offer a similar sentance as was placed upon you?"

"That doesn't matter to me. His death would deny you your power. I have no objections to killing, and you should know that; you made me this way!" Mordain moved forward. "Leave me be, shade! I will not give you what you want."

"Oh?" Krodalis's dark face turned back to Mordain, the moonlight catching the side of his boneline. "And what if I were to offer you a trade?"

"You have nothing that I want!"

Krodalis moved towards Mordain, speaking as he moved, "Oh, but I do." It was only when he stood right in front of Mordain that he stopped. He leaned forward, moving his lips to Mordain's ear and whispering, "I can make you mortal again."

The Mage of Shadows' shock was clear. This... this is a trick! It can't be true! Why... why would he... No, it's a trick... It has to be... Yes, it's all lies! "Keep your forked tounge in your mouth."

"You are not an idiot, Mordain. You know I am speaking the truth. It is my power that runs through you. I afflicted you with it, and I can take it away. You will be free of this demon," Krodalis waved a hand along Mordain's sleeve, crumbling away the fabric to show the pale, blue skin beneath, "and returned to what you were before. Except this time there will be no poison to afflict you. You will be... happy."

Mordain looked down at his arm, rage building within him as he gazed at the blue skin. The thought of freedom from this terrible curse was... overwhelming. For so many years, he had resigned himself to this horrid fate. He had accepted being no more than the... the creature he had become. But now, salvation was within his grasp. But to what end?

"My... my mortality is useless. Without Shaellana." he turned away from the shade. "What good will it be to feel love and compassion when she is gone? It was Shaellana that I loved, no other. The feelings would only bring me more pain than I am in now."

"But that's the best part."

Slowly, Mordain turned back to him. "What do you mean?"

Krodalis took a step forward. "I can bring her back."

"Liar!" he roared, lunging forward.

But the shade vanished into smoke as Mordain made contact, reappearing behind him. "My mastering of necromancy is beyond that of any other. You are no fool to the ways of magic; surely you and your cousin must have come across some of my ancient teachings? To animate a corpse is childs play. To grant life is something that requires true power. And I have that power. Mordain, I am that power."

He was shocked by his own mind. He was listening to the words of this monster and, for once, his ears were not deaf. He was considering it. The thought of it all, of once again having a life, a life that wasn't ravaged by war and hate. It could be his. After so long, it could be his.

"You have suffered enough for this land, more than enough. They asked so much of you, and you emerged triumphant time and again in their name. And for what? So you could be thrown aside? Exile, Mordain. That is all that your service to Weissland has brought you. Exile."

"The... the monks are defeated. They will hound me no longer, my exile is at an end." retorted Mordain, although his words were hollow. Even the rage had left them.

"Their leader is dead. That does not mean your exile is over. Do you think the King would take you back? After you turned your blade upon him?" Krodalis moved closer again. "Remember what you felt, when he stood near Shaellana. You wanted to strike him down and snatch the life out of him. The King trusts the monks more than he trusts you, and they will still hunt you. Even the little bitch that killed their leader hates you. If no other, then she will resume the hunt against you."

"No, you're wrong!"

"They will use you against me, just as they used you against Drathmor. Then you will find yourself right back in this situation. Exiled and hunted by those you fought to save." The shade held forth his hand. "Take my hand, Mordain. Claim your rightful reward. Weissland cast you aside; you need not save it. Live out the rest of your days with Shaellana in peace. Let the two of you do what you always wanted. Embrace your dreams, Mordain. They are right here in my hand. All you have to do is claim them!"

Mordain raised his hand to his head, clutching at his skull. "No, NO! I... I can't! This is my life, these are my people-"

"Your people have abandonned you. It is high time that you abandonned them."

Krodalis outstretched his other hand to his side. A silvery blue form was pulled into existence. It shimmered for a moment, and then took shape. It was Shaellana.

"Mordain?" asked the spirit softly, before her eyes went wide. "Mordain!"

Mordain looked at her. The desire was overwhelming. "Shae..." he outstretched his hand to touch her's, but withdrew and stared at Krodalis. "You... I... no..."

The shade clenched his fist sharply. Dark lightning surrounded the spirit, ravaging her form and dropping her to her knees screaming in agony. "Believe it or not, Mordain, the dead can suffer! You think about what I said; I will return to you for your submission!" roared Krodalis before both he and Shaellana faded.

"NO!" roared Mordain, lunging towards the shade. This time, however, those around him did start at the sound of his voice. The trance was over. Mordain looked around at them. He lifted his staff and leaned on it, but his gaze was drawn to Wyrillyn. The man was bolt upright and looking straight at Mordain.

Wyrillyn's face was a mask of pure terror as he spoke; "He was here."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Mordain was still in shock. He stood upright, but turned away from them.

"It is the only reason for his presence." snapped Wyrillyn, rising. "We need to move. Now."

Nathaniel was glad to see Ash co-operating with him. This was not the time for egos and posturing, far too much was at stake now, least of all their lives. Drakkon drew his sword as a precaution, with his staff in his other hand, and started walking out of the small clearing they had camped in.

Ash assumed point situation, signalling Zuka to be right on his heels. The rest of the Dragons formed up in an inverted V formation behind their leader. All of them had firm grips on their weapons.

Zuka glanced at Nathaniel and Mordain and asked, "Can you feel any enemies? Magical intuition?"

Ash turned his head and stared maliciously at the junior Omega Dragon. Zuka adopted an apologizing look and concentrated once again on his duty.

Mordain hardly heard the Realmer as they moved. His mind was still obsessed with what Krodalis had said, and what he had done. To be mortal again? It was... overwhelming.

-----

Nhazhan moved across the grassland, still somewhat south of the company that he pursued. But his Master whispered into his mind; Nhazhan knew that they were close.
