Ash said nothing. Nathaniel was not the most talkative of people, he realized. Deciding not to bother the mage anymore, Ash instead talked to James. His tone was slightly defensive.

"We are going with them, James. They seem to have a higher purpose and if we were to split from them now we would be in bigger trouble."

James did not reply. He was still bitter about the destruction of so many of his comrades. He nodded to his commander, but did not even look at him.

Mordain walked with Wyrillyn following just behind. The old elf was looking left to right, in the fashion of a startled woodlands creature.

"Nervous?" asked Mordain simply.

"More like terrified! You sent the boy away, I'm the only target left here." he said, his voice wavering more noticeably than he would have liked.

"Kristian deserve a better shot at life than you." said Mordain. "And, as much as I despise you, Nathaniel is right; you are more capable of defending yourself. If you die, then try and at least take solace in the fact that for once in your life you sacrificed something for another!"
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Nathaniel kept walking, they still had a long way to go. And that was the problem, because he did not have a long time to go. Oh, he could feel it, hear it, like drums beating inside his skull. The maddening sound of approaching death.

Time passed slowly as the company walked on through the vast, empty grassland. At a good pace, Mordain estimated they could reach their destination in four days. After all, now that Kristian had been taken by the monks, there was no reason to travel all the way to Asulien.

"Night will be descending soon." said Wyrillyn. "We will need to find a place to make camp."

Nathaniel said "Concealment is going to be a problem in the grasslands. We'll have to sleep in shifts."

Mordain shook his head. "That won't be necessary. I don't sleep. You should all get your rest."

Ash looked at Mordain, shocked at the fact the mage had just stated. What stunned ash more was the matter-of-factly tone of his voice.

He politely asked, "If you wish, I can have my men sleep in shifts and help you guard the camp? It would be no problem at all."

((I guessed it was a matter-of-factly tone. Forgive me if I was wrong))

(( :P ))

"Whichever you wish. It does not bother me."

The skies were darkening, so they would need to stop.

The Dragons looked at their commander. Ash quietly told them to go to sleep and get some rest. Most of them were still injured from the fight with the monks. Besides, this Mordain was much more powerful than any of them.

Still, Ash would probably stay awake all night. He doubted he could sleep with the memory of his recently killed friends.

Once the camp was set up, such as a huddle of people with little equipment was a camp, Nathaniel found a reasonable comfortable cleft in the land to lean his back against and sat down. Far too many thoughts crowded his mind, and mentally he wandered to far off places.

Ash sat down. He gazed at the starry sky, his hands resting on his knees. He sighed as he longed for home. And he prayed. For the first time in his life, Ash prayed. For forgiveness. For his fallen Dragon's forgiveness.

It was a moment of mental weakness. He knew he had to toughen up for the upcoming adventures. He could not afford going all soft when he had to get the rest of his team alive through this mess. Just this one night. Only then would he allow himself the comfort of self pity. He promised it would be the last.

"Your men showed great courage today." said Mordain, almost as if he had known what the man was thinking. He stood beside Ash, though the man remained upon the ground for now. "Your decision, and their sacrifice, to stand by me in a time of need will not be forgotten."

James walked away from the fire and looked out across the land. He stood alone, one with his thoughts.
He thought of the men who had died, and knew it had been the right thing. He felt responsible, he had called the dragons on this quest.
Ash was his superior but his leadership had of late been unsound. Now was not the time to re-arrange the command structure however. James knew the men respected him and would follow him, if the worst came to the worst he could act.
He stood staring out into the foreign lands.

"Should you ever feel agony for the loss of your Brothers due to enemy guns, bear through it with a stern smile and let your enemy know that you will get into combat soon enough. His judgement cannot be avoided!

Should your charge falter under heavy resistence, roar your devotion in His name and amount whatever strength you have left at one enemy point and crush it utterly! Let the enemy feel your pain by turning their's into agony!

Should you lay beaten and dying on the field, laugh with pride for even in death our enemies will fear us, leave them with a scar that will haunt them till the time of their retribution!" - Chaplain Valorus

Ash nodded as he stared into the blackness. He did not look at Mordain. The mage's words sounded hollow to Ash. The seasoned Dragon knew that Mordain felt an obligation to say such things. It was mere courtesy. Yet neither Nathaniel nor Mordain were "normal" people, Ash thought. Maybe such words, when coming from such a powerful being, carried much more weight than he at first realized.

Still gazing into the horizon, Ash then said, "Thank you. They died heroes' deaths. And if these deaths were for a true purpose, then..." Ash paused for a moment, "well then I guess there are worse deaths."

Nathaniel scratched his beard as he thought. There was still so much he wanted to do, he did not want this to be his time. There had to be some way to delay this.

Lilith said cruelly "There is no way, you're going to die mage."

Nathaniel knew that most of what the spirit said was either a lie or mere boast. He had held the spirit at bay for seven years, he could go on longer if he could remain strong of mind. There were still chances to banish the spirit yet, Nathaniel just had to find them.

The spirit replied "Denial is a terrible thing. You cannot deny this."

"Whether or not their deaths will count for anything is up to we who still walk this world. Let that drive your actions in the events to come." Mordain's voice was impassive, as always. He could not feel sorrow for the deaths of these Realmers, but he was more than capable of respecting them for what they had done. "The honour of the dead lies in the hands of the living."

"Yeah," Ash said as he looked down, "You are right. I had my men stay with you because I now believe in the maxim that it's better to die for something than to live for nothing." Ash finally looked at Mordain as he said, "Compared to the scale of your mission I have lived for nothing my entire life. I'm ready to die for something now. Just as my men did."

Ash turned to look at the stars once more. He believed in his own words. All of his dreams of becoming a free mercenary seemed like a drop in the ocean; like a second in time. He had never worried about a meaning with his life, but finding a meaning in the death of his men finally made him realize that he could die without accomplishing anything out of the ordinary. No more. He smiled. For the first time in Weissland, Ash smiled.

James walked to the fire and sat down. He kept his thoughts to himself and didn't acknowledge the others, he was darkin his thoughts.

It troubled him and he had overheard Ash, the idiot had finally learnt what James had known all along.
