Kelan stared at Mordain and launched a powerful burst of energy at him.

Mordain slammed his staff into the ground directly in front of him. The imdestructable surface took the brunt of the blast, parting it as it raged against him. The magic shredded the bottom edges of his robes and his feet slid back through the ground. But he remained standing none the less.

His eyes fell upon the dead realmers, as well as the maddening face of Kelan. He lifted his staff, spoke spell words and crashed it down upon the ground once more. Great tenticles, born of black magic, shot from beneath him to strike each monk and cast them back, dispelling their circle formation. When Kelan was dazed by the attack, Mordain rushed forward and swung his staff at the man's feet. He knocked him to the ground and crashed the butt of his staff down on the man's chest to pin him there, and placed his foot on his sword arm.

"Look at you!" he snarled. "I can see the same murderous desire in your eye as I have in so many of my enemies! You are becoming no better than I. You are becoming a monster!" He inclined his head towards the girl. "Is murder part of Aracen's plan, girl?"

Wyrillyn drew his sword and moved quickly towards another of the monks, engaging him in close-quarters.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Seeing her leader pinned down, Laiya suddenly flew into action, drawing her sword and rushing at Mordain. As she ran, her robes billowed about her, showing her gleaming silvery-white armor, and a great burst of energy blasted forward, lifting Mordain up and off of Kelan and sending him sprawing some yards away. Laiya slowed as she neared Kelan, who leapt up and walked towards the smoking body of Mordain. Around them, the battle was not going well for the Realmers, as the monks had them backed into an ever-decreasing circle, and there were not many of them left. Kelan threw another bolt of power at Mordain, ending any chance of the man getting up. As Laiya watched him, however, he noticed that there was something wrong.

Kelan stood over Mordain, put his boot down hard on the man's chest, and looked into his face. "You fool," he said quietly, leaning down closer to Mordain. "Did you really think you could escape the monks of Aracen? Die now, by His Will." With that, Kelan slowly drew his own sword, held it upside-down, and brought it up over his head.

Suddenly, Kelan screamed in pain and horror, and a glimmering sword pierced forward through his chest. His own sword fell from his hands, and he staggered off of Mordain, turning around and seeing Laiya standing there, her sword bloodied, but her face a mask of sorrow and anguish. Tears ran down her face as she screamed, "What happened to you, Kelan?! What happened?!" The monks had slowly withdrawn from the combat, no longer attacking, but not letting their guard down, unsure of what to do.

"I was doing the Will of Aracen," said Kelan, his voice sounding surprised, as if he expected Laiya to know the answer.

Laiya shook her head. "No," she said. "He's right! You're a monster! You were supposed to bring our Order to the people! To restore the Faith! That was your duty!"

"I was to kill Mordain..." he stammered.

"You were obsessed!" screamed Laiya.

Kelan fell to his knees, blood staining his white robes as it pumped out of his body. "I...have failed..." he muttered, and slumped over into the dirt.

Laiya stared at him, then, unable to continue holding it, her sword dropped from her hands and she collapsed, sobbing.

Nathaniel looked at the monks and said grimly "I think this is over." He sheathed his sword and walked over to one of the Realmers lying on the ground. Kneeling down, Nathaniel placed a hand over the man and spoke the words of a healing spell, curing what had been a grievous wound.

Mordain rose slowly from the ground, steam rising from his robes. He was battered and bruised but, as always, he would endure. He looked down at Kelan and then over at the girl. Beneath the shroud, his face remained as it always did. He, like Nathaniel, moved to help a Realmer. He reached down and lifted the man from the ground, placing him back on his feet. He was more than aware of a couple of monks standing behind him, not sure how to proceed.

"If you consider this pursuit to be over, then leave now with your lives. If not..." his grip tightened on his staff and black magic crackled along its surface. "I have so many reasons to tear the life from you, but there is a much larger threat. And that is more concerning than your hopes of slaying me."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Once Nathaniel finished healing the soldier, he helped the man to his feet. Exchanging a brief nod, he moved to check on another of the Realmers. Kneeling once more, the blood on the ground staining his black robe, Nathaniel checked the man. He was beyond help, no breath, and no pulse. Drakkon leant back from the body and sighed, something which came out like a low growl. Such a waste of life, he thought darkly.

Rising from the ground, wiping away some of her tears, and sniffling, Laiya asked, "Where are you headed?"

Mordain's head merely inclined back towards her; he did not look at her directly. "Asulien."

Nathaniel rose from his position to his full height. He cleared his throat "Yes, they are quite adept at teleportation, even over exceptional distances with large groups and still accurate. Of course the question as to why we should trust them comes to mind."

Nathaniel sighed "Yes, the enemy of every living person. That's still not a reason to trust you. As soon as this threat is over you'll go right back to hunting us." He walked over and picked up the two-handed axe again, there was nothing more he could do for the Realmers, they were either standing or dead now.

Nathaniel looked over at Mordain with a weary expression "Well its up to you my Lord, you're the one with most at stake trusting them. I can't be bothered talking to these idiots anymore."

Mordain turned to the woman, using great concentration to stop himself from showing the pain he was in. The magic of the monks had taken its toll.

"If that is your wish, then you may take the boy, or Wyrillyn. It is safer to keep them separate. I will keep the other with me."

"That is foolish," said Laiya. "If both groups are heading to Asulien, why leave one behind to take the long road?"

"Both groups are not headed for Asulien. I, for one, have been exiled! I doubt I would find a warm reception awaiting a monster beyond the walls of Asulien." He took a few steps forward. "And you offered us your aid; we did not ask for your opinion. Only one will travel to Asulien."

Nathaniel said "If I may suggest Lord Mordain, they should take the boy." Looking at Wyrillyn he continued "Less chance of screw-ups that way."

Kristian held his arm, having been seared by one of the magical attacks. Mordain knelt down in front of him and moved his hand to see the wound. He raised his own palm and began working his magic to stem the damage.

"So be it." He said when his magic was complete. He stood up once more and looked down on the boy. "You will go with the monks to Asulien. You will be safe there. I doubt our enemy has the forces to mount an assault of the city."

"An assault is far from what he would need to capture either of us!" hissed Wyrillyn, bursting suddenly into the conversation. "He lurks in every shadow, in every darkened heart. You are not stopping him; you are stalling him."

Mordain turned to look at the old elf. "Then what would you suggest?" he asked, his voice etched with hate.

Wyrillyn spread a smile across his face. "Oh, I'm not making a suggestion. I just want to make sure you do not delude yourselves." The old elf then looked, rather suddenly, to the east. "He is coming..."

Mordain knew that Wyrillyn would not joke on such matters; he feared Krodalis more than anything, and it seemed he was right to do so. "Kristian, travel with the monks. The rest of you will come with me. Our journey remains a long one."

Kristian moved over to the monks, but Mordain stopped him and handed him a piece of paper first, marked with Mordain's seal. He pushed it into Kristian's grasp. "This letter is important, boy." He said. He looked over to the monks, then back down at Kristian. "Find a man named Marr in Asulien. This is for his eyes only, no other. Not theirs," nodding towards the monks, "not yours, not even the King's. Do you understand?"

Kristian nodded. He was wary about travelling with the monks, since they had recently tried to kill Lord Mordain, but he trusted the Mage Lord's judgement. He tucked the letter into his pocket and stood with the monks, admiring their armour.
