"Amusing." was Krodalis's cold reply.

As the shade finished speaking, the creature that was Ulldomae poured onto the scene. Like an ocean formed from pure darkness, he descended upon the scene. The shadows raged as a physical flood, swirling around the company and encircling them all. It cut off all escape routes.

"Back, monster!" roared Mordain as he blasted the shadow with a bolt of dark magic.

When the bolt of magic struck the shadow, the vortex merely swirled and twisted at the point of impact before simply absorbing the magic. Mordain took a few steps back, staggered in disbelief.

"This creature is not some lackey you can dispel with your sorcery, Mordain. It will not bow to healing powers as the feeble undead do, nor will it cower before a blade." Krodalis moved closer as he spoke.

Mordain looked around. His eyes searched the sky; if he flew, he could save himself, Nathaniel and his father, but the Realmers would be left to die. That, however, was not an ideal choice. However, just as he was contemplating the idea, the shadows rose higher and moved to join above, effectively sealing them all within a sphere of darkness. The only light was a thin, purple glow that surrounded Krodalis. Was this truly the end of it all?
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Looking around Nathaniel said "Surrounded by darkness? I expected something more subtle. Well, none of you necromancers seem to learn anything more complex than hitting things with other things, all that differs is the scale."

James and the other dragons looked around at the darkness surrounding them. Slowly and calmly he drew his blade, its edge glinting with purpose.

This was a mages war, but he would be damned if he would die without a weapon in his hands.

"Should you ever feel agony for the loss of your Brothers due to enemy guns, bear through it with a stern smile and let your enemy know that you will get into combat soon enough. His judgement cannot be avoided!

Should your charge falter under heavy resistence, roar your devotion in His name and amount whatever strength you have left at one enemy point and crush it utterly! Let the enemy feel your pain by turning their's into agony!

Should you lay beaten and dying on the field, laugh with pride for even in death our enemies will fear us, leave them with a scar that will haunt them till the time of their retribution!" - Chaplain Valorus

"You think of me as some feeble necromancer?" asked Krodalis, almost shocked by the statement. "You think of me in the same light as Drathmor... Of course. How typical. But, that is not true. Drathmor was a fool. You should all see this. He wanted to rule this broken world. I, on the other hand, am merely tired of tolerating its failures. This world that you live in, this life that you cling to, both are riddled with imperfections. Both are born of hate and greed, of selfish, blood-soaked, flawed interpretations of what you mortals consider to be 'purpose'. You are all so blind. Blind to the evils that have claimed this life."

"I know them better than most!" retorted Mordain.

"Then you are worse than most! How can you stand idly by while evil is free to go about its work? You see the cruelty of life, and you tolerate it. You all tolerate it! Well no more. This is all going to end. Without good, there can be no evil. Without life, there can be neither. I will wipe the slate clean."

"What gives you the right? You are no better than the evils you claim to hate!"

"I despise them, I despise myself. You think I would be blind enough to go through existence without complete knowledge of what I am? I am not better than them, I am worse." Krodalis moved forward. "What gives me the right? Well, why don't we look at your precious world and see what gives any of you the right? My reasoning is no different from a common criminal or an invading army; might makes right!"
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Nathaniel laughed "You're wrong, and you're an idiot." He spoke calmly "You seem to believe that just because the world isn't fair, that it isn't perfect that it is a failure and must be ended. That is a fallacy born of an inferior intellect. Life itself cannot be perfect or it could never exist in the first place, perfection is an unobtainable concept."

He continued "We have the right because we are alive, you have given up your right to be a part of the world by perverting the course of nature. Just as all undead have gone against the natural order of things, you have denied the one all-important truth. For existance to have any meaning life must end and begin again. For a man to learn anything he must be born, grow older and die, for others to take his place and repeat the cycle."

Finally he growled "Your plan is the antithisis of nature, and we will oppose you until your threat is ended."

"Life isn't fair." He spoke the words softly, almost musing them to himself. "Of course it isn't, it never has been. But that is not the point. The point is that all of you, all of us, have been given the gift of existence and we have squandered it. We have wasted it. A beautiful world once rich in all things natural, and what has become of it? What have mortals done? What do you do? You draw lines in the dirt and you fight over who gets to stand on which side! Existence, magnificence and splendour surround your every step and breath and yet you ignore it. Existence is something that mortals took to with selfish desires. We have all failed Aracen, as much as He has failed us. But his mistakes can be undone. They will be undone. Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close."

"Not today..." said Wyrillyn softly.

Krodalis shifted his gaze onto the elf. "Oh?"

"The mage is right! If indeed your victory is inevitable as you claim, then you do not need me to lie down and accept it! I will fight you to the bitter end." With that, Wyrillyn threw his hands into the air and summoned a mighty burst of blinding light.

The sphere of darkness that was Ulldomae released a whaling, rasping screech and broke its form, and retreated from the light. In that instant, Mordain invoked his magic. A vortex of shadows engulfed them all. When it cleared, Mordain and his companions were gone, leaving only Krodalis and Ulldomae in the clearing.

"No!" shouted the shade. He rounded on Ulldomae. "Go. Find them. FIND THEM!"

-----

The vortex took them many miles north. When it dissipated upon a field, Mordain collapsed to the ground breathing heavily.

Nathaniel looked around at the field as his senses made up the information between the darkness, blinding light, and sudden arrival here. They were in a field, the tall grass of the grasslands around them, with a few trees dotted about but otherwise they had left the woods they had been in.

Drakkon could not be sure how far they had gone but hopefully far enough to give them some breathing room. Glancing at Mordain Nathaniel was certain that was something they desperately needed, as without Mordain they would be dead.

Mordain picked himself up to sit on one knee and lean on his staff. "We... We need to be more prepared for things like that. I don't know what that shadow creature was, but it could have killed us."

"There will be plenty of time to rest when you're dead!" snarled Wyrillyn. "We need to move."

"We are less than a day from our destination now. We have time to breathe. I intend to use it." replied Mordain, glaring at his father.

Nathaniel said grimly "Not to put more of a dampener on things, but do we have any ideas of how to stop him?" He was standing up to his full height and held his staff in both hands in front of him, the headpiece of the staff roughly level with his shoulders.

Ash looked at the dragons around him and at the mages.
"Sirs, this is not our fight and we are just hindering you in a war we cannot help in." He said.

Wyrillyn looked at Nathaniel out of the corner of his eye. "None who walk this world know that secret." he said quietly.

Mordain turned to face the Realmers. "This is not your fight, no. I would not expect you to help any further than you have. If you want to walk away, then do so."

Nathaniel nodded thinking back. He said to the Dragons "I doubt the enemy will follow you if you leave our company, it would be safer for you. As you mentioned before you have your own mission to accomplish. I would suggest you travel towards Ordail. If these mercenaries you are after are in Weissland the odds are favourable they entered through Ordail."

Looking at Wyrillyn for a moment Drakkon replied "As for that, we'll just have to be creative then."

Ash smiled and nodded to the group. "Good luck in that case. I hope that things work out for you." Without anything else being said he turned and began heading away. James looked at the group of mages a second longer and smiled slightly before following with the remaining members of the Dragons.

Mordain pulled himself up to his full height but then sagged instantly and leaned heavily on his staff. "Teleportation." he muttered to himself, shaking his head. Then, he looked over at Wyrillyn. "What was that... that thing?"

Wyrillyn didn't look at Mordain or Nathaniel as he spoke. "It is called Ulldomae. A demon, a being of pure malevolence."

"I have never seen anything like it. To be free of a truly physical form, yet retain completely conscious thought?"

"In truth, he can take any form. But the purest of light will drive him back." He turned his head slightly towards them. "He is at his strongest in the shadows. No darker servant than Ulldomae serves the Dark Lord. The demon is Krodalis's greatest asset. Ulldomae will not stop hunting us. He does not tire, he does not hunger; he merely hunts."

Nathaniel narrowed his eyes and repeated "The purest of light will drive him back. Oh Gods preserve us, we're not going to have to call on those pretentious monks to help kill it are we?"

"But I've dealt with creatures which hunt people like nothing but prey. In a distant land I learned of creatures which terrified the humans who lived there, hunted them like a man hunting for sport." Nathaniel said remembering. "The noises, you could hear them in the night, the sort of sounds which make men pray to whatever gods they believe in that they are not the next meal. The creatures were more than just apex predators, it was like they were built to hunt and kill, no fear, no hesitation, pain did not stop them."

He added darkly "So I taught them to be afraid..."

Turning back towards the others he said "Everything can be killed, and if pure light is this Ulldomae's weakness we'll find a way of using it. Still, given the power of this thing it is probably best we delay fighting it."

"Avoiding him is our best chance. Stay away from the shadows and he cannot harm us." said Wyrillyn.

Mordain looked around. "Without the Realmers, our number is down to only three. Another confrontation with the enemy could end us... We will need to reach Carak before then."

Nathaniel nodded "Yes, we should get going. Although I think the departure of the Realmers might aid us, depending on whether the enemy wants to split resources tracking both groups."

He took another look around the area and pointed in the direction they had been heading "This way, correct?"

Mordain stood up straight, though clearly with some effort, and looked around. "Yes. It is not far now. We need to continue heading north. It is buried in the mountains."

Wyrillyn took off first and moved quickly across the plains. Mordain followed after, using his staff as a walking stick to aid him.
