--Entering from Amei-- The mercenaries approached the woods in a loose formation. They were still a few hundred metres from the treeline. Akeld led the way, with Riace and Osevis following and Nacea bringing up the rear with her bow. Akeld gripped the haft of his ornate two-handed axe as he moved forward. |

Wyrillyn was completely still, gazing through the trees. He had thought he had escaped Krodalis, but he knew now that no one ever truly escaped that monster. In truth, he had always known, but hadn't wanted to believe it. Everything was a stall... there was no way to defeat something of that power. |

The mercenaries continued towards the woods. They had spotted their quarry entering the woods but there was no telling if they were waiting in there or moving on quickly, so Akeld had ordered the others to be cautious. They were close to the treeline now, just a few minutes more would see them reach it. |

"The city will die." "What?" asked Mordain sharply, turning to Wyrillyn. "Amei." continued Wyrillyn, gesturing towards the city. "Nhazhan passed his plague onto it. The population have got a week at best, a few if they've got good resistance to sickness. But they're going to die." Mordain moved towards the man. "That is an unnfortunate loss, but we have no time to help. Leave them." Kristian looked up. "You... you're just going to let them die?" he asked, his voice weak. The Mage of Shadows turned to look down on the boy who sat with his legs held against his chest on the ground. "Protecting you and Wyrillyn is all that matters right now. So yes, I am going to let them die." "You... you monster!" exclaimed Kristian. Mordain turned away. "I've done things deserving of titles far worse than that, boy." |

The mercenaries cleared the treeline and entered the woods. They moved carefully. Akeld said quietly "Stick together, look for signs of their passing." The group searched around them, looking for anything, footprints, disturbed ground, broken plantlife. |

Mordain spun back on the mercenaries, when his father caught his arm. "What?" snapped Mordain. Wyrillyn pointed to the sleeve of his robe. Mordain looked down and saw blood slowly trickly onto the ground. "You idiot!" screamed Wyrillyn, throwing Mordain's arm away. "If anyone follows us then that trail could've lead them right to us!" |

Riace knelt down silently and pointed "Got a blood trail here. It's faint but we can follow it." Akeld stood at his shoulder and said "Let's move." The mercenaries moved off at a quick but careful pace, heading in the direction of the blood trail they had found. It did not take them long to find the source of the trail. |

Mordain lifted his sleeve, finding that he did indeed have a deep wound over his arm between his elbow and wrist. "I don't have time to heal this." he said, shaking his head. Gritting his teeth, he lifted his arm and conjured fire in his free hand. He ran it over the wound, sealing it. |

Wyrillyn turned, his ears picking up something. "We've got company." He said in a hushed whisper. Mordain rolled his sleeve back down, gripped his staff in both hands, moved Kristian behind him and waited. |

The mercenaries moved forward as the trees thinned and the enemy was brought into full view. Akeld and Osevis led the way, with their weapons ready. Riace was behind them with his sword. Nacea stood to his side as she notched an arrow to her bow. Riace was about to move when out of nowhere a sword with a red, magical sheen erupted through the elf's back and out of his chest. He cried out in agony, a horrified shriek. The elf pitched forward to the ground as he was pushed off the sword, revealing the black-clad mage standing behind, a fierce look in his emerald eyes. The Elven woman was raising her bow to aim at Mordain. With lightning quick reflexes Nathaniel Drakkon kicked out, knocking her aside into a tree. Then he was moving again. Akeld and Osevis turned to face this newly arrived attacker, the elf swinging low with his axe while the human thrust with his sword. In a feat of some athleticism, Drakkon leapt over the attacks and landed a kick squarely at Osevis' jaw. The mercenary staggered back holding his face. Akeld was an experienced fighter, and continued attacking. Nathaniel parried, his sword making a crackling sound with each impact. It was then that the mage found his opening, dodging to his left and slashing out. The move caught Akeld in the arm, a deep wound that forced him to drop his weapon and suck in air as he tried to stifle the pain. Nathaniel did not hesitate, decapitating Akeld with a vicious arc of his blade. Osevis tried to jump Drakkon from behind, but the black-clad mage simply turned his sword backwards and thrust under-arm, impaling the running man on the sword. Drakkon wrenched the sword from the mercenary's gut. Nacea tried to rise and attack the mage, with tears in her eyes. Before she could draw a weapon the mage spun on his heel and hit Nacea across the side of the head with a spinning heel kick. Nacea fell to the ground hard and was momentarily stunned. Nathaniel Drakkon stopped moving and caught his breath. He had dispelled the illusion he had cast in Amei at the perfect time, catching the mercenaries in a well-timed ambush. None of them had seen it coming. And the body which had been recovered by the monks would simply disappear as soon as their backs were turned. Drakkon had found a true mastery over illusion in the last few years. Edited by Gorfang, Apr 10 2009, 03:10 AM.

Mordain slowly lowered his staff, and moved slowly forward. He could hardly believe his eyes. Nathaniel Drakkon stood over the bloodied corpses of the mercenaries. "Nathaniel..." he looked around him, trying to figure it out. "An illusion?" he asked, his tone faint and curious. |

Nathaniel walked towards Mordain as he wiped his sword on a piece of cloth torn from one of the dead mercenaries. Once this was done he tossed the rag aside. Drakkon replied "A necessary measure. I could see the prisoners, those mercenaries and another woman who I see is not amongst them leaving the docks but could not extract myself from the fight with that Seraphim with all those blasted monks around. I could say something about two birds and one stone, but that would be crass." |

James nodded at last still confused but having seen the magery at work here. "There are more yes, they will be coming after us." James said, "Which is good as there will be more to help you in what you are doing." |
"Should you ever feel agony for the loss of your Brothers due to enemy guns, bear through it with a stern smile and let your enemy know that you will get into combat soon enough. His judgement cannot be avoided! Should your charge falter under heavy resistence, roar your devotion in His name and amount whatever strength you have left at one enemy point and crush it utterly! Let the enemy feel your pain by turning their's into agony! Should you lay beaten and dying on the field, laugh with pride for even in death our enemies will fear us, leave them with a scar that will haunt them till the time of their retribution!" - Chaplain Valorus | |

Nathaniel looked at her and said "No, this one lives." He took a step forward and the fear could clearly be seen on her face. Nacea was afraid, despite her experience as a mercenary. Her friends were dead, her lover Akeld was dead. Drakkon suddenly gripped the elven woman by the throat and lifted her up, forcing her back against a tree. Nathaniel fixed her with a venomous stare and said "This is a very lucky day for you, for I am rarely in a forgiving mood. I'll make that clear right now. I want you to go out and tell the people, not Amei, go anywhere but. Tell the people that there is a black-hooded human and he is the avatar of vengeance. Do you understand?" Nacea shook her head slightly but said nothing, eyes wide in fear. Nathaniel continued "You will be a herald of sorts. Tell the criminals and the assassins, and any other scum that preys on the innocent. Tell them that if they step out of line, if they hurt people, or kill, or do anything wrong, I am going to come for them. And I will show them no mercy like that which I am showing you. I will find them and I will strike down upon them with a furious vengeance." The light in his eyes made it clear that Drakkon was speaking nothing but the truth. He asked in a low growl "Do you understand?" Nacea nodded "Y-yes." "Good. Now," he let go of her throat and pulled her around in a different direction before pointing "you will run. And you will not even think of doing anything against us or refusing to do what I demand of you, because you live only at my sufferance, and I can take that life at the slightest whim wherever you are." Nacea said honestly, convinced by his words and the look in his eye "I'll do it, I'll do what you want." "Run." Nathaniel said firmly, and the elven woman ran off through the woods away from Amei with great haste. Nathaniel looked at Mordain "Some people have uses beyond keeping our swords in use. Like other men break bodies, I break minds. I'm not going to sacrifice a useful asset, not when there is so much for me to do before the end." |
