Yndalla moved waited at the city gates for the other mages to join him. He sat upon a great white steed, staff in hand. A group of younger mages had joined him already. They had all been told the risks of this endeavour, but also that battles like these would define them as mages. To defend Weissland was their very purpose.

Ellen soon arrived with more, as well as Gordon, another of the mage instructors. "Yndalla." she called over as they approached. "Twenty-strong, all in all. A good number. We are ready to aid the King."

"What of Harkin?" asked Yndalla curiously.

"He is to stay behind, to guard against any surprise attacks. We should never underestimate a Necromancer Lord." replied Ellen.

"Of course. Mages, we go now to join in a fight for Weissland. Onward!"

-----

Harkin was the last of the mage instructors within the city. His magic was split into two specialities; the magic of protection, and the magic of weakening. Many had criticised his choice to study both, as they were opposing forces and difficult to master both. But Harkin had stood firm, wishing to follow in the magical styling's of Lord Mordain, who was a famed master of both lores, as well as black magic. But Harkin was not like Lord Mordain.

The elder instructor stood within the mage tower, weaving his magic over a brazier. He wore blue and purple robes, largely to represent the two lores who studied. His hair was jet black, never having lost its colour despite his age. A neat beard was formed upon his chin and his eyes were a deep shade of blue.

A pinch more blackwood and I am done...

The powder fell into the flame. From the moment that the substances combined within the fire, it flew upwards and took on a dark colour. A towering shape stepped into view within the flames; the form of Azzhrak Scaend.

Harkin fell to his knees. "Master."

"What is it, mage?" asked the Necromancer Lord.

"The King has left to battle your forces, my Lord. And my brethren have gone to join him."

"More magi?"

"Yes, Lord Azzhrak." Harkin trembled before his Lord, but almost more out of a need for acceptance than out of fear. There had always been something very off about the mage, a sort of maddening bravado. It was rare for him to be truly afraid, especially when fear was most deserved.

"Then they shall be turned to my ranks." Azzhrak's gaze intensified and bore down on Harkin. "You know what you must do for me now, Harkin?"

"Of course my Lord, it shall be done." He raised his eyes to the necromancer. "And then... then you will teach me your magic?"

"Yes, mage. Then I will grant you access to all of necromancy's powers."

With that, the form of the necromancer vanished and the flames died down, leaving the room in darkness. Harkin rose from the floor; there was work to be done.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

One of the lead battlemages from the army rode up alongside James and saluted. "Sire, a contingent of mages from Nairio has joined the column," said the battlemage.

"Very well," said James. "Are they cleared?"

"Yes, my liege," said the battlemage. "They are Weissland mages, of the Tower."

James nodded and said, "Integrate them with the battlemages; they will be able to help us. And have their leader report to me."

A man approached the mages on horseback. He saluted them before asking, "Who is in charge of this group?"

"I am, sir." replied Yndalla calmly.

"The King wishes to speak with you. As for the rest of you, you are to integrate yourselves with the battlemages. Come, I will show you." He gestured for the mages to follow before asking a guard to show Yndalla to the King.

The instructor followed the soldier to King James. He gave a bow from upon his horse as he approached, as best he could. "You wished to speak with me, my Liege?"

In truth, Yndalla was amazed. He was in the presence of the King of Weissland. He had never met the Archmage, even when he studied at the Mystic Tower. He had never expected to meet the Archmage. Even less so did he ever think he would meet the rightful King of Weissland. But, this was a time of battle, not a time of joy.

James nodded and said, "Yes, you are the one in charge, then. What is your name?"

"Yndalla, I have instructed the battlemages to integrate your people as seamlessly as possible into the army here," said James. "You will have control over your people, but you will answer to the head battlemage; as you can understand, last-minute changes to a fighting force can be somewhat tricky to handle. Nevertheless, it is good to have you here." He paused and said, "Do you have any questions or concerns?"

Yndalla looked around him at the impressive force of Weisslanders. 30,000-strong, to be sure.

"Just one, sire. What size of force does the necromancer have?"

"Around fifty to sixty thousand, according to my scouts," said James.

Yndalla's heart sank. He had spoken to his mages of the glory of battle, and proving themselves. But to face a force so big... No, they would do this for Weissland.

"Very well, my liege. Am I dismissed?"

Yndalla took his leave. He moved through the army until finding Ellen.

"Sixty thousand." he said quietly.

"What?!" exclaimed Ellen.

"That is the size of the enemy force."

"Yndalla, the mages... they'll all be killed in this battle! They're not ready for this!" Ellen kept her voice low. Yndalla was her superior, it was not her place to tell the students anything that he did not wish them to know.

"We have to fight, Ellen. For Weissland."

((Can we move this to a new topic? Like "Grasslands" or something? Just so we're not battling in the city topic, because we're not fighting in the city obviously.))

The city guard were in the barracks, many of them sleeping. One man stood watch at the back door. He whistled softly to himself and tried to occupy his mind with anything to keep him awake. Suddenly, there was a small spark of light behind his head and he fell to the ground unconscious. Harkin stepped from the shadows and entered the barracks.

The mage moved through the halls silently. His robes were held tightly about him and he had something in his hand, but it was hidden within a fist that was clamped shut. Gradually he made his way to the kitchen, and there he found what he was looking for; ingredients to their breakfast. The guards always had soup in the mornings, and Harkin knew which bowl they would use to cook it. He opened his hand to reveal a vial containing a strange liquid. He poured the substance into the bowl and spoke a few words. The liquid dissolved and absorbed itself into the bowl.

Whistling, Harkin left the barracks.
