"Yes, but it will not last. Those blasted monks will see to that. The people may still follow me, but I cannot allow that. If the monks claim it be against the will of their precious god, then that could put my followers at risk." He sighed. "Maybe one day they'll atone for their crimes, but I don't see that happening. Not as long as they are hiding behind their ignorance." The pair had made good progress, and the day was drawing to a close. Mordain could see the Paelin Woods up ahead. --Leaving Nairo-- --Entering Paelin Woods-- |

--Entering from Asulien-- It took several full days of marching to reach Nairio from Asulien, but the men were grim and determined, ready to fight the necromancer who sat camped east of the city. Not wishing to engage the enemy without first getting some intelligence, James had told the army to march wide, skirting the edge of the necromancer's fort and coming up to Nairio from the south so as to avoid a conflict on unfavorable terms. Now, as they came up on the city, James turned to Mardis and said, "General, halt the army here. Have them relax, but don't make camp yet." "Yes, my liege," said Mardis. He turned to one of his aides and said, "See that the battalion commanders receive this information." The aide saluted and rode off to disseminate the information. "Come with me," said James, dismounting and beginning to walk towards the city, accompanied by Kassal and the contingent of Royal Guardsmen. "I want to find whoever is in charge here and talk to them about the situation." |

It was not long before the town's guard captain heard that the King himself was looking for him. Understandably not wanting to waste the man's time, the captain was rushing quickly through the street with a couple of his men in toe. "There, sir!" said one of the guards, pointing over towards the King and his Royal Guardsmen. The captain took a moment to compose himself before walking over. "My Liege." he said humbly. |

"Martyn, sire." replied the man. In truth, he was taken aback, but did his very best not to show it. The King was not the first noble he had met, but he was certainly the first who had given a damn about the name of a mere guard captain. Yet Martyn had heard the rumours of the King; he was a man of the people, they said. Always on the front lines with his soldiers. But such things had sounded like tales that had simply been skewed and broadened with each telling. And now he wondered if perhaps all that were true. |

"We knew peace for only a brief moment, sire. A necromancer, we believe he is a lord, has established himself not far from here. His horde is vast, but so far we have only seen raiding parties. Things have been hard, my lord." |

Before he spoke, a flash of pure relief passed over Martyn's face. What he had said was true; they had only dealt with raiding forces, but he had known that they would not have been able to defeat the Necromancer Lord alone. Now, it seemed that the scum would answer to the might of Weissland's army. "No, sire", he said after his thoughts were collected. "We have been holding out fine, and our supplies will last still." |

"Thank you, sire." replied the Captain. He gave a small bow before walking away, back towards the barracks. Surely his men would want to know what had happened. |

Leading those who accompanied him back to the army, James looked over at Mardis and said, "Have some scouts deploy forward of the army and find out what they can about the necromancer's defenses." "Yes, my Liege," said Mardis. |

Martyn returned to the barracks where he found many of his men had gathered as well as Yndalla, the head of the city's magi. He was an elf, sporting a mane of chestnut hair and a grizzled chin of stubble. The man stood tall by human standards and was clad in grey robes. A light blue thread had been used to embroider fantastic patterns into his garments. In his right hand, he held his staff. It was a beautiful piece of craftsmanship; formed from two white canes that had been bent and shaped so that they spiralled tightly around one another until they met at the top, with a small gap to perfectly hold the stormy blue gem that sat there. "Captain, what was that about?" exclaimed one of the younger officers, incapable of containing himself any more. "Has the King come to help us?" Martyn nodded. "Yes, he has. He told me himself." "How many men did he bring with him?" asked Yndalla. "He didn't say, but he did say that the army of Weissland was here to help us finally be rid of that damn necromancer." The mage slowly stroked his chin, contemplating. "The King is a mighty warrior. We have all heard of his battle against the Dark Lord. If he can stop Drathmor, then this necromancer should be dead sooner rather than later." |

After several hours, an aide ran up to General Mardis. After speaking briefly with him, Mardis walked over to where James was sitting and said, "Sire, the scouts have returned." "Very good, General," said James. "Send them to me." Mardis motioned to the aide, who ran off and returned a moment later with two men in tow. They wore leather armor instead of the standard chainmail and blue tunics of the Weissland Army, and were armed with swords and bows. Seeing them, James stood up and walked towards them. They saluted, and James returned the salute and said, "Gentlemen, what did you find out?" "The Necromancer's fort is sizable," said the first scout. "A wide, square formation, but the walls are not strong in all areas, as it seems to be under construction still. Most of the outer wall is just wooden palisades, but some places are reinforced in stone." The scout crouched down and James did likewise as the scout drew an outline of the fort in the dirt. "The wall has stone at these points," said the scout, outlining several points in the walls. "What about the numbers of the enemy?" asked James. "Sizable as well, although they all seem to be undead; if there are any contingents of living troops, they are slim to none," said the scout. "All told, probably around 60,000, my Liege." "Is there anything else?" asked James. "There is a small structure atop a hill in the center, but it does not appear to serve any military function," said the scout. "Very well, thank you," said James. The scout saluted, James returned the salute, and the man was gone. "What are you thinking?" asked Mardis. "This will be more difficult than Aelendak," said James. "We will not be able to flank this necromancer easily as we did in the south. However, he will not stay in his fort. The undead are no good at defense; they will come out to face us on the field, most likely, where they can use their numbers to their advantage." "With undead, however, the men will not be too worried," said Mardis. "We have faced them before; these men are all veterans of the Defiled Kingdom's invasion." "True," said James. "But do not be overconfident. Necromancers can be unpredictable. Ensure the battlemages are ready with protection spells, and keep the cavalry in reserve, as well as the Royal Battalion." "Aye, my Liege," said Mardis. "I want the army moving soon," said James. "Get the men ready and break down the camp." |

Yndalla had returned to the magi tower, which stood near the centre of the city. By no means was it the size of the famed Mystic Tower, but it served its purpose nonetheless. The tower was designed only to house a handful of mages. The rest made their homes throughout the city, coming to the tower to study or if instructed. Yndalla had gathered the three other magi instructors in the meeting chamber, which was the entire third floor of the tower. "The King has arrived in the city, my friends. He means to put an end to the necromancer to the east." announced the mage. "A bloody battle will ensue. Such a task will not be easy, nor will it be without sacrifice." replied Ellen, a mage who specialised in fire magic. Her appearance reflected her magic of choice; fiery, red hair, slender yet stern features and scarlet robes. She carried no staff. Instead, a red gem sat in the palm of each hand, held there by a series of straps. The gems were all but flat; they did not hinder her hands. "I am aware of that. A very dangerous battle it will be, indeed. But that is why you are all here. We must assemble the city's mages and be ready to join the fight. Against a necromancer, I expect the King will need our aid." |

Within the hour, the army was formed up in their battalions in a long column, and Mardis reported to James, "The army is formed, sire." "Good, move them out," said James. The drums and bugle calls went up, and the army started to move. |
