Kelan, Laiya, and the contingent of monks that had been sent after Mordain neared Nairio. As they walked, Kelan stopped, held out his hands, and breathed in deeply.

"What is it?" asked Laiya.

Kelan kept his eyes closed but said, "He is here, in Nairio."

"Can you be sure?" asked Laiya. "I cannot sense him."

"The shadow of his power lies upon this city," said Kelan. He opened his eyes and said, "Quickly, to the city."

Nathaniel was shocked by this news. He said "I'm sorry for your loss Lord Mordain. I think I was unconcious for over a day then, the last time I spoke with the King was just after I learned from Shaellana about your situation." He did not want to use the word exile, you can never be sure who is listening. Nathaniel continued quietly "I have sent word to the Watchmen, they will hinder the monks wherever possible, and aid you if you require it."

Denin Alvarez stood watch outside of the city gates. He was in command of this post, with several other guards in the area. Orders had come down that nobody was allowed into the city without presenting themselves to the city watch and providing some proof of their identity. Given the recent undead attacks it certainly made sense. Denin idly scratched his arm as he stood. It was the arm which held a tattoo, one which was very important to him.

The monks approached the city gates, and Kelan and Laiya approached the sentry who stood there. "Please open this gate, we have business in this city," said Kelan.

Denin cleared his throat before responding "I'll need you to identify yourselves first. The city was recently attacked by an undead force, we cannot just let anyone pass."

Kelan looked at Laiya before saying, "We are monks of Aracen on a mission from the King. Move aside."

Mordain suddenly went very quiet and his head lowered. Then, moments later, he rose up once more.

"They are here." he said quietly.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"Step aside," said Kelan. "Do not stand in Aracen's way."

Nathaniel whispered "Who is here? I don't sense any necromancy."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denin motioned to the other guards and they moved forward, their weapons at the ready. Those on the walls were watching as well. Denin said "I am not standing in Aracen's way, I am standing in your way. We have our orders and we will carry them out. I believe that you are monks of Aracen on a mission for the King, but I cannot allow anyone into the city unless I get a name."

He looked at the other guards and at the leader of the group of monks. With a sigh he said "In the interests of avoiding needless conflict, at least tell me your name. If you truly are on a mission for the King it should not be a problem to tell me your name. We cannot let you pass otherwise."

"This is not necromancy. Quite the opposite." said Mordain. "The 'great' monks of Aracen have marked me for death. It would seem they have tracked me here."

Nathaniel replied "I heard that from Shaellana. I didn't think they would be after you so soon. What should we do?"

Mordain gripped his staff in both hands. "These old fools will not stop hunting me. Perhaps a fill of their own blood will discourage them."

-----

The guard captain approached the gate, summoned by one of the guards. He walked up to the monks.

"What is your business here?" he demanded.

Denin turned and saluted to his superior. The other guards did the same.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nathaniel said "I'm fine with that, but should we not do this somewhere which won't lose you the support of the people?"

"Their support can come and go as it pleases. But I won't risk their safety." replied Mordain. "This barracks is empty. Let the monks come."

Nathaniel nodded "Good." He drew his sword, looking at the red glow for a moment.

"Enough of this," said Kelan, and with a wave of his hand he shut the captain's mouth and sealed the guards' weapons in their sheathes. "Unless you wish to be devoured by Kilnor, do not stand in the way of Aracen's Will." He and the monks strode past the guards, pushing aside those who were in the way. As they walked through the city, Kelan used his divine power to center in on Mordain, and finally, said, "There he is." Turning a corner, they saw the barracks, and standing in front of it were Mordain and a man holding a glowing sword.

"Evil lies heavy on the other," said Laiya.

"But not within him," said Kelan. "Kill Mordain. Spare the other; he can still be saved. Laiya, challenge him."

She stepped forward and said, "Mordain Thaendil, you are a demon and consumed by evil. You are beyond saving. Your only redemption lies in death. If you repent now and surrender, we will give you a holy and honorable death, and Aracen may yet have mercy on your soul."

Mordain turned to face them, placing his staff in one hand and pointing at the monks with the other. "You wretches have taken everything from me. Death is all that awaits you unless you give up this pathetic pursuit."

Mordain arched an eyebrow. "Forsaken?" He took a few steps forward. "Little girl, my soul was forfeit long ago."
