"Where am I?" Arhaina asked. "What happened?"

Kalon continued to move. It was rather uncomfortable; the armour plates on his shoulder chafed her skin, and her arm was still sore. The dark elf, of course, was well aware of that.

"Mordain attacked you. You have been unconscious for about an hour."

Arhaina was silent. Her memories of the conflict slid back into place.

"There is nothing left for us here," Kalon told her. "I'm taking you back to Rathor. Chances are, my fleet controls the waters from coast to coast up there. If Lathaon lives up to my expectations, he will follow. If not, Elandir will."

"What happened to your men?" Arhaina asked.

"Probably dead, or fleeing. If there are survivors, they will have the sense to regroup further north. Their lives do not hold the same importance as ours do."

Kalon was right. The survivors had regrouped further north, and he they set up camp there. Arhaina, though having been carried most of the way there, felt exhausted, but Kalon pressed a sword into her grip and made her fight his soldiers. There were only thirteen of them left, a mixture of the strongest and luckiest, but Kalon seemed almost pleased when Arhaina skilfully killed the first. She was weak and out of practice, but she had been good with a sword in the past, and that spark had never left her.

For the dark elves, it was a challenge to see if they could survive until Kalon stopped the duel, as most were far from eager to harm her due to her connection with their Lord. If they had been less loyal, or more confident, they might have aimed to kill.

The second soldier was more difficult. He parried her every move and quickly disarmed her, earning cheers from the other dark elves. None of them feared death, it seemed, and while they openly enjoyed the duels, Kalon watched in silence. Arhaina could not tell what he hoped to achieve with these brutal games of his, but she was too tired to think too hard about it.

The fighting continued until Arhaina had killed several more of the dark elves and was too worn out to fight any longer. Perhaps it had done her good. She suspected she must have gotten quite out of shape as of late.

She slept in Kalon's tent, but lay as far from him as she could. She slept easily, and did not notice him slip outside in the middle of the night.

When she woke, he was outside, cooking some sort of meat.

"What happened to the others?" she asked.

"Dead," Kalon replied. "My dark elves do not flee and nor do I. We could not let them live."

Arhaina was stunned. So that was why he had made her fight his men. He had intended for her to kill them to make it easy for him to finish the job during the night, all just for his reputation. It made her feel sick that he could be so heartless as to kill his own men like that.

"It's wild boar," he said, passing her a slice of meat. "Hope you can stomach it."

Arhaina did so, but she was furious at Kalon and she made no attempt to hide it. Everything he had done beforehand, he had seemed to do for a purpose, albeit not one she could understand or agree with.

They travelled on, Arhaina keeping her distance and refusing to speak to him. When they finally came to the northern edge of the mountains, and the small vessel which had carried Kalon and his men was in sight, she stopped. "Give me that sword again," she said, "and this time, fight me yourself."

"A foolish idea and a waste of time," he retorted, "but very well."

As soon as she had hold of the hilt, she struck him to the side of the face. She felt the blow, but it felt worth it. Kalon was more surprised than hurt, but he backed off and drew his own sword.

He was careful with his attacks, but unlike hers, his skill was undiminished. It took him only a few seconds to disarm her, after which he sheathed his sword. "You might as well keep that one," he told her. "You know better than to try anything."

The ship had drifted somewhat from where Kalon had left it, so the two of them had to swim to reach it. The anchor had held, though, but it was too heavy to be reeled in without the other dark elves, so Kalon cut the rope and let the waves pull the ship off shore. Sailing was particularly difficult in the current conditions of the channel, and it took a lot of work from such a small crew.
