The building was not as large as the one in Odessa, where the Company was based. It had taken time and resources to expand outwards fully, but Primatech had now gained itself a foothold in the UK and no longer had to send agents across for each individual.

There were two levels of cells, storage and offices below ground which were inaccessible to members of the public, save for those the Company brought in. Above these was another level which was part of the Primatech Paper fakery, since it was easier to lie about having only one floor underground than having none. Paper was actually made and sold from this building and many of the employees knew no better.

Levels had a different meaning here to floors. The levels included only the restricted floors below ground, and went up as you descended. The most dangerous individuals were kept in Level 2 if not immediately executed.

Their most recent captive, nicknamed Lance, was proving worryingly patient for his young age. He was dressed all in black; the same clothes as he had worn four days ago when the Company captured him. He had spent most of his time so far lying slouched against the wall with the hood of his coat shadowing his face. When a member brought him food or tried to question him, he would either be calm and cold, become suddenly angry, or ignore his visitor completely.

There was a knock on the door, and John Bronze stepped into the room. Lance straightened up and pushed his hood back, revealing his long, dark hair. "Just so you know, I'm not taking those pills anymore. Not taking your shit either, John, so go and bother someone else before I decide to kill you."

"You are hardly in a position to make such threats or decisions. You will take the pills, no matter your opinion on the matter," John said, moving closer.

Lance came to his feet, bearing down on his jailer with his height and presence. John's pistol was out in a flash though, and as the prisoner grabbed John's wrist, the gun was already aimed at his head. With his left hand, John slammed his attacker against the wall, by the throat.

"I see it was a mistake leaving your hands unbound," observed John Bronze. "That mistake will not be made twice."

((Okay, I got bored enough to start at last. Come on people!))

With the aid of a fellow agent, a short but well built man who John had seen only once or twice and did not know, he transferred the prisoner to a surgical-looking chair where he was strapped tightly in place and force-fed the pills.

"You think you can keep me in here forever?" Lance taunted. "You're wasting time and effort and I'll bet your company is spread thinly enough as it is."

John ignored him.

"That why you're keeping me alive?"

"Right now, I'm having trouble thinking of a good enough reason to keep you alive," the agent replied. "I'm going to give you some time to think about what you can possibly hope to achieve by bothering people. After that, you're going to speak with my superior and you are to tell him everything he asks you. Until then, you can expect no answers from us. Understand?"

"I'm not taking orders from you, John," Lance said. "I'll do as I please. You'll see."

Stepping out of his car, Edwin Gaulle looked up at the Primatech building. It was vaguely familiar after so much time spent away. He was dressed in a dark grey suit which could have looked very smart but on this man it looked casual yet serious. He carried a briefcase by his side, but that was mainly filled with clothing.

Walking through the automatic doors, he was greeted by the receptionist, a woman he recognised as Emily Bronze from reading through Company files. She was new.

"Good evening. Can I help you?"

"My name is Edwin Gaulle," he said, showing the card he received as a member of the Company. Edwin always spoke quickly but clearly. "I was informed that your associates would be expecting me."

"Just hang on a second then, please," she replied and picked up the telephone behind the counter. She could make calls within the building directly through the Company's network, minimising the risk of outside espionage. It was controlled from down in Level 2, allowing for the upstairs phones to be disconnected from the network with the flick of a switch.

"Hello?"

"Hi Dad, there's a Mr. Gaulle here -"

"Right," Gary interrupted her. "Let him know I'm on my way up now."

Emily put the phone down with a smile, and relayed the information she had just received, telling Edwin to take a seat.

The entrance opened out into a small lobby. Gary walked quickly through a set of double doors to the right. The only other interior doors, up ahead, doors ahead were behind the counter and a layer of bulletproof glass, and so were inaccessible from the room.

"Good; you're here," Edwin exclaimed, standing up again. "We have much to cover, it seems."

The two of them fell smoothly into place walking side by side through the building.

"We do, we do," Gary agreed.

"I'm going to need a report on the latest assignments once we reach your office," Edwin told him. "I've been out of touch for a while now, and received little more than instructions from the HQ over in the States."

They reached Gary's office after descending two flights of stairs. It was located close to the staircase on Level 1.

"Have you read Markus McLeod's files yet?"

"Yes, I believe so," Edwin replied. "He was a top priority assignment, if I remember correctly."

"We failed. I thought to lead the assignment myself, and we caught him and his bodyguard by surprise and the other agent tased Markus, but he made the mistake of touching his skin and the target used his power."

Edwin looked on in silence.

"I was preoccupied with fighting the target's bodyguard. I was stronger, but he was impervious to damage. He fought me me until Markus had fled, at which point I threw him to the ground and carried the other agent to safety."

"This agent - he lost consciousness then?"

"Yes. It is common among his victims, the first few times," Gary explained. "The agent also needed medical and psychological help to cure his newfound addiction."

"Your failure is a grave disappointment, Gary," Edwin said, shaking his head. "It is unacceptable for the Company to get sloppy when such a lot is at stake... What of the unidentified assignment then?"

"He's down in Level 2. We lost a good agent capturing him... though I can't quite recall who."

Edwin knew, but thought better of pressing the matter. "How has he behaved so far?"

"My son, John, has been taking care of him mostly. You would be better off speaking to him, downstairs."

"Then I will speak to John. In the mean time, I'm calling a meeting and would like a selection of our most skilled members, minus those on assingments, assembled in the next twenty minutes."

Edwin left the office then, and headed down to Level 2.

((If you want to attend the meeting, that was your cue to make an intro post.))

Edwin encountered John as he walked through the double doors by the stairs, and recognised him from pictures and descriptions. There wasn't much similarity between him and his father, though.

"You must be John Bronze, yes?" Edwin said, extending his hand.

"Yes," John replied, shaking the hand.

"My name is Edwin Gaulle, Regional Manager of Primatech UK. Your father told me you were looking after a prisoner."

"You mean Lance?" John replied, nodding knowingly as Edwin introduced himself. "It would be best if you met him for yourself. Follow me."

John led the way to Lance's cell, talking as he did. "He has been uncooperative so far. Sometimes calm but sometimes angry and even violent, and he has refused to give us any information beyond his desired nickname. We've had to force-feed him the power negation pills."

"What sort of approaches have you taken in questioning him?" Edwin asked.

Jack Riley strode into a small conference room wearing black fatigues with black combat boots. He looked around at the small number of men and women in the room and asked, "I assume everyone else is on their way?"

There was no response, and Jack took a seat at one of the chairs and leaned back, waiting.

"Mostly persuasion and reasoning. I believe he does have intelligence beneath his possible mental instability. We have not resorted to torture or serious threats as of yet, partially because he expects it and partially because he responds better to nice treatment," John explained. "I didn't want to make things worse, especially with the memory fluid in short supply."

"Have you answered all his questions directly?" Edwin asked.

"No."

"A truth or a well made lie are often more effective."

John stopped outside the window of Lance's cell and indicated the door. Edwin opened it with a keycard and entered the room.

Lance appeared to be asleep, on the floor as usual, but to one with Edwin's ability he was obviously not.

"Hello, Lance," Edwin said. "I'd appreciate it if you would at least look as if you're listening to me."

There was no answer.

"I know you're awake, Lance. If you won't get up now, I won't waste my time trying to talk to you."

Curiously, Lance opened his eyes.

___________

Sonja walked into the room then, followed by Gary. The former took a seat while the latter scanned the room and looked satisfied. A selection, a handful of agents, was what Edwin had asked for.

"Mr. Gaulle should be here shortly," Gary said. There was a laptop across the room, near to a projector. He switched both on and brought up a map of Edinburgh, with the confirmed/known and possible locations of various assignments and others with abilities marked on it.

((I was hoping to move the Lance plot on a bit more this morning, but don't have time :( ))

There was a chair opposite the bed, and Edwin sat down there. "My name is Edwin. Will you tell me yours?"

"Call me Lance," Lance replied flatly.

"I've always thought there was more to people than what they choose to be," Edwin said. "This gift of yours, for example - I don't suppose you just decided to manifest it, did you?"

"I've always thought there were some things which do matter and some which don't," Lance said defensively but mockingly. "You are delving into the latter."

"Nobody has escaped this facility before, you know, Lance," Edwin said. "If you want any hope, you need to give something in return."

Lance turned away with disinterest.

"You killed a good agent. Can you comprehend the repercussions of that on society? How many other killers will go free because she can no longer be there to catch them?"

Lance turned to face him but did not reply.

"You have a lot to answer for as it is," Edwin said. "Tomorrow, I expect you to take the pills willingly and answer our questions. In the afternoon, you will have an injection... Cooperate, and that injection might not be fatal."

Lance closed his eyes again and left Edwin to walk away. The Company man closed and locked the door behind him.

"John, I think you'd better come with me. I've called a meeting to discuss plans, particularly regarding Markus McLeod."

"Right."

The two of them walked back up to Level 1 and entered the conference room, where the others were waiting. Edwin watched John take a seat, and Gary zoom the map in and centre it on the Beer Tree. He walked casually forward, looking for familiar faces as he did so.

"Good evening. For those of you that don't know me, I am Edwin Gaulle - Regional Manager," he paused as he walked over to the wall which the map was projected onto. "I have called this meeting to discuss our response to the actions of Markus McLeod and our previous failure of the assignment. This man's capture is of utmost importance. He has the ability to infuse others with abilities of his choice, albeit for a limited time and with addictive side effects."

Edwin paced slightly as he spoke, a bit uncomfortable it seemed.

"If he is allowed the continued use of this power, there is a serious risk that knowledge of evolved humans could become widespread. The potential consequences on those with and without powers, as well as on this organisation, would be severe."

"The pair of agents we sent to capture him failed their assignment. Markus escaped, and he no doubt has been alerted to our presence, if nothing more," Edwin said.

"We are monitoring the entrance to his club using hidden cameras in parked cars," Gary added, looking grateful for his anonymity but feeling a bit sheepish. "When he or anyone else leaves or enters, we know."

He opened up another window on the laptop, bringing up the view from the camera.

"We are waiting for a plan," Edwin said. "This man's place is in the middle of the city. We could send another pair of agents but that might fail without a good plan. We could go in with guns blazing but that is a surefire way of exposing ourselves - and all those with powers - to the public and to the law."

"I don't believe we are the only ones with hidden cameras. How do you intend to reach him?" Edwin asked, "and what do we have to fall back on, should you fail?"

"We have our methods," said Jack. "Helicopter, through the sewers, or just walking in the front door. And fall back on? That's not my job. My job is to get results. If anything goes wrong, I don't think I'll be around to have to worry about it."

"It is nobody's job to do anything less than succeed. It is my job, however, to take precautions when the stakes are high, and to maintain organisation and coordination," Edwin said. "What happens if you go in and he isn't even there?"
