"I don't know what to do. This... this magic is beyond me, at least for now. To remove such a spell would take time."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"Lathaon might know what to do..." Arhaina said. "Perhaps you should go and find Ithrain; he is here too. For the sake of his brother, I want that man to at least have a proper trial."

Mordain cast a glance back at Kalon, then looked back to Arhaina. "Stay strong."

With that, he walked off. The magical scent of Ithrain was strong. The mage was still within the camp. A dark elf moved to halt Mordain, but was thrown aside with such force that his neck broke upon impact.

Kalon moved back to where the bulk of the dark elves were stationed. "Take Elandir alive," he said. "Kill the rest of them."

Now the dark elves chased after the mercenaries, who had been moving fairly slowly when they realised they were not being pursued. It would not take long to catch them.

"So your demon friend thinks the spell can be broken?" Kalon said to Arhaina. "The archmage took what he needed from your soul. Do you think it can still sustain itself?"

He smiled and then continued. "If the bond is broken, you will die. Whatever spell was trying to destroy his soul has already done the damage it was intended to do. We could have brought Lathaon back sooner, but I wanted you to survive."

"You can't claim to be a better mage than he is," Arhaina said confidently. "He will find another way."

"What gambles have I made, Arhaina, that have not been heavily in my favour?" Kalon asked. "He loves you still, I am sure, and he will answer to me when he comes. Your husband has already unlocked a portion of the Casket of Wrath's magic and while I do not believe all the mages in the world could match its power, I think his magic will be sufficient."

"For what?" Arhaina asked impatiently.

"Wait and see."

Mordain blew through the dark elf camp. Soon, they were running from him; none of them could stop him. He followed the magical scent all the way to the tent where Ithrain was bound. Elven torturers were there with him. They did not live for long.

Mordain moved behind Ithrain and released him before walking back round and dragging the mage to his feet. "You will help me, Ithrain."

Ithrain started to chuckle, but then coughed up some blood.

"In any case, I am going to have to deal with Mordain before he kills more of my men," Kalon said. "I once thought the Thaendils valued life. How things change..."

He followed the trail of destruction, Arhaina with him.

Mordain turned and violently cast Ithrain from the tent, letting him fall in a heap on the ground. He walked over anc crouched beside the mage's head.

"I don't know what you value anymore, except for yourself. So I don't know if you'd help me for Weissland, or for Arhaina, but I know you'll help me to save your own, wretched skin! Help me, or I will kill you."

He rose, seeing that Kalon was approaching. The demon took a few paces forward.

"And what are you going to do, Kalon?" he called.

"I just want to make things clear, Mordain," Kalon said, continuing to walk. "You're going to have to go through me before you kill any more dark elves. Stay your hand, and I will tell my men to stop killing the Weisslanders, and I will not be so inclined to kill you. And by all means take Ithrain; he is no longer of use to me."

"Go through you?" Mordain moved closer. "And just how do you think you're going to stop me doing anything? You have no power over me, Kalon."

"Do you remember Greystaff? How his magic ultimately failed against me?" Kalon asked. "Even a less powerful mage should have been able to kill me, don't you agree?"

He brought his sword up, ready to strike if that became necessary.

"You hadn't given yourself a terrible weakness when you fought him." replied Mordain, in an odly calm voice.

His hand shot from his side and sent a bolt of chaotic power straight into Arhaina. The woman shrieked in agony as she hurled through the air and smacked off of a large pole with such horrid force that for a moment Mordain feared he may have broken her arm. But she was alive, nonetheless.

Kalon lunged at Mordain as he released the bolt, but he felt a blow from behind which caught him off balance. He seemed less affected than Arhaina had been, and he dropped neither his sword nor his shield.

Kalon shook his head as he regained his stance. "I hope you do not delude yourself with the idea that you are on the side of 'good', demon."

Then he attacked again.

Mordain summoned his staff into his hands, deflecting Kalon's sword. He pushed his staff against Kalon, pressing the flat of the blade against his enemy's chest.

"I don't delude myself, Kalon. I am a monster; this I know. I have no secrets from myself." He pushed with greater strength and threw Kalon back. "And you're gravely mistaken if you think you have the slightest idea of what I'm capable of!"

"You cannot outlast me, Mordain," Kalon said. "Don't you understand? Unless you give up, you will only stab your cousin's heart, through her, or through death."

He recovered and attacked, this time making use of his shield to redirect Mordain's staff and making a swipe from the side.

Mordain dodged and lept backwards, landing next to Arhaina. He crouched down, placing his free hand on her forehead.

"I'm not here to kill you."

Magic crackled from his fingertips.

"Just everyone you brought with you."

He sent a spell straight into Arhaina's mind. There was a moment of searing pain before she lost consciousness. Mordain lifted himself into the air and descended back towards the elves who were attacking Elandir's forces.

Kalon touched his forehead, feeling the pain, but he remained conscious and again, he recovered.

"Ithrain, you know Weissland can only offer you execution. Find Shaellana and kill her, and then you may hope for a more powerful position than dead traitor. Go!"

Kalon left him, running over to Arhaina and dropping his shield. He lifted her up over his shoulder and retreated further into the mountains.

Ithrain put his magic to work on his body, healing the damage the dark elves had done. Then he cloaked himself as Elandir had done earlier, and wandered out.

Mordain flew down towards the elves. He raised his hands and sent streams of chaotic magic into their ranks. Then, he landed, dropping into the midst of it. The first elf he saw, he grabbed and literally tore in half, though not without some strain.

The Mage of Shadows turned to the others near him. An elf came at him; Mordain ripped his throat out with a single swipe. A second attacked; Mordain hit him with a shockwave of magic, centered within him, that shattered his bones. A third was killed by raw magic alone.

Mordain lashed, hacked, stabbed and butchered his way through the elves before finally releasing a demonic roar of terrible proportion. The elves that remained looked ready to break and run. Mordain had killed so many of them, and sustained only a few cuts and scrapes, as well as a flesh wound. Nothing he couldn't handle.

"Run!" he roared. "Flee back to your master and leave this place now! Or, so help me, my fury will consume all of you!"

One of the dark elves finally fled, and then all of a sudden the rest of them were following suit. Only a handful of the mercenaries remained.

Mordain turned to the mercenaries. His robes were tattered and torn; much of his demonic form was revealed. He was not sure how they would react, but in truth he didn't care.

Mordain walked straight towards Elandir. "Kalon's gone. He has taken Arhaina."

Elandir seemed disappointed.

"So you could not kill him after all? What happened up there?"
