The four magically camouflaged figures reached the cluster of black tents, located on a small plateau on the northern side of one of the peaks. It was a steep and perilous climb, one that Arhaina and Ithrain would probably not have attempted without the two dark elves urging them on. The wind was fierce, and there were many loose rocks waiting to crush them or trip them over. Nobody spoke a word either, just as Kalon had ordered, not until they reached the top and he finally permitted the others to speak. "Would you please give me some clothing?" Arhaina asked, her skin reddened by the numbing cold. "It's so cold here..." Ithrain remained silent except for his own shivering. "No," Kalon said flatly. "You may sit by the fire and be grateful that you have even that." The fire in the centre of the camp was fairly large, with a fair few dark elves already sat by it, talking, eating and drinking. Arhaina thought it remarkable that they had managed to construct it here. The smoke was blowing east, but out of sight. "Mage, take Ithrain and see that he is denied use of his magic," Kalon said, "but leave his tongue unharmed." |

((Just a question before I involved myself. Did not something happen with Ithrain's ability to use magic in Asulien?)) |

((No, he was gagged before entering Asulien but the gag was removed before he, Elandir, Narandar and Renaulin, went to the sanctuary - after they discovered Arhaina, Khanden and Brae had left them. Since then he already used his magic to blast a few dark elves.)) |

((But something happened when somebody came in touch with Kalon's sword? Is he gagged now anyway?)) |

((Korth got cut but managed to heal himself quickly enough to survive its magic. It wasn't mentioned that Ithrain was gagged again, but it would make sense if he was.)) |

The dark elf mage, his name Mothrim Prim, made a short bow to Kalon before nodding to two other dark elves who stepped forward and picked Ithrain up. They forced him, not in a friendly manner, into the camp and sat him down on a log. There Mothrim conjured a ball of air which he forced into the mouth of Ithrain. Then he removed the gag filling his mouth, and used the magically controlled air to lock fast his tongue." Mothrim sat on the other side of the fireplace. He looked towards the area where he had left his master Kalon and smiled, his white teeth shining in the night. |

Kalon nodded his acknowledgement and appreciation before turning back to Arhaina. "You are fortunate, Arhaina, in that you are already being treated better than ordinary prisoners - and I'll have you know I don't even keep prisoners in most circumstances - but I'm also giving you another privilege," he said. Arhaina did not reply, so Kalon continued. "You see, I'm going to give you more than one choice each time I ask something of you. The better you choose, the less the consequences will be for you. Of course, I suggest you do what you can to stay in my favour, because I will get what I want one way or another. The consequences of your choices will affect only you." She risked another look at the penetrating eyes and looked away again quickly. "Why?" The dark elf looked puzzled as to what she was referring to there, but Arhaina rephrased the question in full. "Why would you treat me 'better'?" "Oh, it wouldn't do to ruin my prize unnecessarily, would it?" Kalon said. "I will give you a chance to rest tonight, seeing as though you will not give me the answers I want in this state of mind. Your friend Ithrain will not be so lucky." Again, Arhaina said nothing. Kalon stood up now, leaving her sitting by the fire. He looked around at the nearby dark elves. "If she tries to leave, bring her back, but otherwise you may not lay a finger on her." Then he walked away to where Mothrim had gone. "Ithrain might have need of your talents. Would you like to break him?" |

Mothrim rose from his position. There was a smile on his lips, though his dark eyes was cold. "What will you have me do, master?" |

"I want him alive and able to speak, but within these boundaries you may choose what form his suffering takes," Kalon said softly. "Show him what you think he deserves." |

Mothrim bowed and beckoned his assistants to pick up Ithrain once more. Through the shadows of the camp they moved, into the tent used by one of those two assistants. The third dark elf waited outside while Mothrim and the owner of the tent sat down with Ithrain inside. |

Ithrain did not struggle, try to speak, or even move once he was put in the tent. ---- "Why are you doing this?" The voice came as a surprise to Kalon, and he turned around to find Arhaina standing behind him. "He has made too many wrong choices already," Kalon said after a moment. "He might be a useful tool in eliminating his brother but other than that, he is worthless." "You expect me to rest while your pawns torture him?" she asked without waiting for an answer. "I want you to reconsider delaying things until tomorrow. Whatever you have in store for me, let it begin tonight." |

Mothrim sat in front of Ithrain in the tent. The only light that lit up the place was a small lantern hanging from the pole holding up the centre of the tent. The other dark elf sat a little bit to the right. Ithrain still could not speak, due to the bowl of air holding his tongue. However, this substiture for the ball of clothing filling his mouth earlier made it easier for Ithrain to breath. Also it made it possible for him to eat and drink though not without difficulties at first. "My name is Mothrim Prim," the dark elf mage finally said. "I hail from Oerio, a small settlement in Rathor. Your name is Ithrain. This is Bleluch Fante." The other dark elf said nothing as the Mothrim gestured towards him. At the feet of Bleluch there was a long, closed box in black colour. |

Ithrain turned to him blankly, glanced at the box, and then turned back. ---- Kalon thought for a moment, then nodded. "Follow then." He took her to a different tent, large yet unoccupied. He sat down at one side and she at the other, opposite him. "What do you feel?" the Senian asked her, establishing eye contact. "I'm afraid," she replied calmly. "Good that you try to give me an honest answer - or perhaps the answer you think I was looking for," Kalon said, "but I asked, what you feel, not how you feel." "I don't understand," she said, but she realised what he meant as soon as she had said those words. She panicked somewhat, feeling the blackness inside once again. Those grey eyes still stared into hers relentlessly, but she could not read them in turn. |

"Is there something you maybe would like to say, Ithrain?" the man more whispered than spoke. There was a mocking smile on his lips. The other dark elf turned the black box around and opened it, so that Ithrain still could not see the contents. The light burning in the lantern flicked, a cold wind blowing through the tent. |

He shivered for a moment, then curled his hands into fists and watched the dark elves, and the box, warily. ---- "Not off to a good start, are you?" Kalon said. He drew his sword slowly and Arhaina felt the already cold temperature drop further. That black blade sucked away the heat around it even when there was so little to absorb. "Would you like to change your answer now?" "I..." The blade came closer, sharp, deadly but controlled. He touched the flat of the sword to her neck and she felt that same icy aura so close, and the blackness inside grew in strength, a mad, shrieking rage in her mind. The blade came away as she moved, putting her hands over her ears in pain. Kalon had not cut, and yet something had happened to her and he had witnessed it. "All I wanted there was a confirmation of what I already knew," the dark elf said, "yet you would not give it willingly. Perhaps now you see what little difference your choices make to me." |

Morthim nodded and laughed. It was a short, mocking law full of sadistic joy. From his robes he pulled a small pergament and a pen and gave it to Ithrain. "Do you write, mage lord?" |

Ithrain drew a rough picture in the centre which resembled a skull, and then quickly started to form runes around it with the ink. ---- "I understand, Lord Cyrredlues," she said weakly. "Good," he said, still gazing into her eyes. He only blinked when she did, giving her the impression that he did not blink at all. "Do you know why you feel this?" "No," Arhaina said, hoping Kalon would recognise this as truthful. "It is another soul bound to your own, one which feels your pain, your fear, your danger. It draws strength from you, strength which you cannot afford to give. Should it drain away your soul, then it will break free and manifest itself on this plane as a shade." Arhaina was silent for a moment, her own gaze dropping to the floor. "So this is what he did." |

As Ithrain began to write down the magical runes on the paper the material began to melt between his hands until nothing remained of it. As the mage lord looked up, Morthim was laughing once more. "Do you really think I would give a chance to use your magic?" Another dark elf, a fourth acting as a servant to Morthim, entered the tent. This one was taller than the other three, unusually tall for a dark elf. |
