((I didn't really see a way out for these guys given their oaths lol.)) "Of course," said the Guardsman with a nod. "Do you need something?" asked Laiya suddenly, walking down the corridor towards them, her footfalls nearly inaudible on the floor. |

"Good then you can step aside if you please, I need to speak with the Queen," said Laiya briskly. Clearly perturbed at this point, the Guardsman said, "The Queen is not to be disturbed under any circumstances under her own instruction." |

"Don't call me lad, Mage," said the Guardsman. "I've spent fifteen years protecting Weissland, and five of them with the Guard." "If these men are bothering you, I can escort them away," said Laiya. "I'll escort you since you're bothering me," said the Guardsman to the monk. |

Nathaniel said coldly in a low voice "Perhaps in those fifteen years you should have learned some respect for your elders then. I am a Seeker Officer who has been protecting Weissland from threats which you couldn't possibly comprehend for over twenty-five years, so if you don't mind I call most men younger than me lad. Would you prefer boy?" Without waiting for an answer he said in his low, cold voice "I thought not. Never talk disrespectfully to me or anyone again, including Sister Laiya. Both of us have suffered far greater for Weissland than most and I will not have those sacrifices disrespected. Inform the Queen when next she leaves her quarters that Lord Mordain wished to see her and I will forget this, fail in that simple task and I will melt the flesh from your bones and have the honour of your entire family destroyed." With that the mage said calmly to Lord Mordain "My lord, I suggest we return once the Queen is rested. I shall return to my other duties." Nathaniel spun on his heel and marched away, heading away from the palace and back to the Seeker's base. |

Mordain watched Nathaniel leave. He certainly admired the man's attitude, one seen far too rarely amongst those in Weissland. However his admiration subsided and anger returned. He grabbed Laiya by the arm and pulled her away from the door with him, not wanting to disturb the Queen. As they moved, he said to the guards; "As my associate said, send a messenger when the Queen has awoken." Then, he released Laiya and spoke in a hushed voice. "And under what authority would you escort me anywhere?" |
|
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

Mordain ignored her feeble attempt to intimidate him. "Where exactly do your delusions end, Laiya? You have no power, no standing in this nation, no authority to hold over my head. You are a glorified cleric and nothing more! Your kind demonstrated nothing in the war other than a remarkable talent for a self-serving awareness of timing. You cowered in your temples, prayed to your god, and ultimately stood by and did nothing as Drathmor drove this nation to the brink of oblivion. Ataya burned and we didn't see you. You materialised just long enough at the end of the battle for Asulien to secure yourselves some misguided view as saviours and to earn the trust of both King and Queen, but trust is all you have. No power. No standing. No authority." His fists were clenched and he strained as he kept his voice low. "You are in my domain now. My authority is second only to the King and Queen themselves. No one beyond them has the right to command me, least of all you!" |

"The power I wield does not come from the authority of this realm," said Laiya, trying to keep her composure, but she clearly was uncomfortable. |

"If you and your order want to keep a place in this realm then you will learn to respect Weissland's laws. Laws that I enforce. Even threatening me is an offence!" He practically spat the last sentence. "Whatever you think your purpose here is, you will fulfill it whilst honouring the codes and conducts of this nation, this nation that you claim to serve." |

Nathaniel arrived back at the Seeker base and headed to one of the areas used for practice and training. He decided to take some time to run through some sword practice. The guard had reacted exactly how Drakkon had expected, and allowed him a good reason to leave before the monk attempted to prod further into why they wanted to talk to the Queen. Nathaniel knew that Lord Mordain was stronger than Laiya, and thus had nothing to fear from her magic. Nathaniel on the other hand, was less sure of how powerful she was, or the limits to the monks' abilities. They seemed able to sense the spirit, or at least something about it. Nathaniel was not willing to risk the chance that Laiya was stronger than him and could somehow gain access to his knowledge of the situation against his will. Nathaniel had a steel will, a near unbreakable mind, but sometimes willpower was not enough to overcome raw magical strength. It was something he would not risk. Complacency is death, he thought grimly as he practiced. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matthias Croe was well into his cups by now. He had been drinking heavily since just after noon and the night was already rushing away. He sighed and picked up another glass, this one with a whiskey in it, and downed it in a gulp and a gasp. If anyone had looked at him, they would have thought Matthias a sorry, wretched state. But the mercenary Captain could care less about what others thought for the time being, he was drowning his sorrows, drowning dead friends. When next he looked up Croe was dimly aware of two figures standing over him. One was slender like a reed, but shapely and inviting. 'Zana, he hoped. The other was a mountainous man, all muscle and gristle. Toric. Admittedly Matthias was so drunk it could have been the other way around. Toric said "We've come to sober you up, boss." By that time Croe had already passed out. |

Mordain sighed as he watched Laiya leave the scene, before uttering "Bitch" under his breath and turning back to the guards. "When the Queen has awoken, send a messenger to the Seeker stronghold. I will await word from you there."

Suddenly the door opened, and Rebecca stood there. Looking between the Guardsmen and Mordain for a moment, Rebecca finally asked, "What is going on out here? What was all that commotion?" |

Mordain stood silent for a moment, but spoke before giving the guards the opportunity to open their ill-informed mouths. "Lady Laiya and I had a disagreement, your majesty, but it has been resolved. I did not mean to wake you." He hated feigning courtesy. Perhaps Rebecca knew he was incapable of giving an honest apology, perhaps she did not. It was best to play it safe, at least until James was returned. |

Mordain nodded. "Yes. May I speak with you in private?" he asked, gesturing to her chamber. He then looked to the guards. "But I would like Nathaniel Drakkon to be present for this conversation. Perhaps your guards could dispatch a messenger?"

Nodding to one of the Guardsmen, Rebecca said, "Send someone to find Nathaniel Drakkon." "Aye, my Queen," said the Guardsman, bowing respectfully before heading off. Opening the door fully, Rebecca motioned for Mordain to enter the chambers. "Quiet, if you please; Cullen is sleeping," she said. ((Whenever you're back, Gorfang, you can just have the messenger get you and bring you back to the Palace.)) |

"As you wish." said Mordain softly as he moved into the room. When the door was closed, Mordain turned to face Rebecca. "We have found a strong lead in the investigation into the disappearance of your husband, your highness." He spoke simply and directly. The wheels in his head were always turning, but there wasn't any need for subtlety yet. |
