"As you wish." After another bow, he turned and began making his way back through the palace. That had gone better than he had expected.

Rebecca walked over and dismissed the nurse and picked up Cullen, then sat down on the bed and cradled him against her chest.

Mordain walked back to the stronghold. He would have to prepare to address the public about the 'necromancer attack', and he would need to be convincing. What he was attempting was difficult; leave enough room for Laiya to continue her suspicions, but not enough room for her to prove him of any wrong-doing. His secrets had to be protected for there was too much at stake. He seemed to have earned a better standing with the Queen than he had expected. The fact that she had sent Laiya away on his request was intriguing, and most unexpected. Perhaps it would not be as difficult to loosen Laiya's grip as he had thought, perhaps the Queen was already doing that herself. But keeping Laiya away from the Queen was important. She could not allowed to tell the Queen exactly what to say to a Mage Lord, for Mordain viewed that merely as the first step down a very dangerous road. If Rebecca would listen to Laiya on that matter, who was to say where it would stop?

He arrived at the stronghold and began walking towards his office, but stopped an aide as he moved past. "Have Lord Marr report to my office, and tell Nathaniel Drakkon to do the same."

The aide saluted and left. Mordain entered his office after collecting food from the kitchen. Carefully, he opened the secret door and walked down to the hidden chamber where Kristian remained sat in a chair and bound in shackles. He looked up as Mordain entered.

"Lord Mordain..." he said timidly. "When can I get out of here?"

"Not yet, boy. Too many questions are still without answers." He handed Kristian the food on a plate and a jug of water. Then, he walked over to the shelves and placed a shimmering orb upon them. It was the orb containing what truly happened during the necromancer's interrogation. For now, he felt it was right to keep it as it could become useful later, although it could just as easily become necessary to destroy it. He stepped back and looked at all the secrets within the room. He pondered if they would be safer in Carak, for that labyrinth was far beyond the reach of the monks.

"What's that?" asked Kristian, sounding a little more cheerful and clearly glad for the food.

"Nothing you need to concern yourself with." He walked over to the boy. "I will be able to release you from here soon, I hope. But I need to know how to contain you."

"You've got a demonic side." he said quickly. "How do you keep that in check?"

Mordain paused for a moment, thinking before he spoke. "Decades of practice." He walked to the door. "I will return soon."

He returned to his office and sealed the hidden door. Perhaps he could use the same techniques he used on himself to contain Kristian's power, but he was unsure if it would be enough. He thought deeply over his options as he sat and waited for Marr and Nathaniel to arrive.

Nathaniel arrived at Lord Mordain's office and knocked. He entered respectfully and said "You sent for me, my lord?"

"Ah yes, Nathaniel." He gestured for the man to sit down and waited for him to do so before continuing. "Firstly, I wanted to know how the Watchmen are progressing. Were you able to find anyone who could look into the monks for us? Has anyone started yet?"

Almost immediately after Mordain had left, Rebecca heard a knock on the door. "Come in," she said, tiredly. This had truly been an exhausting day, but she would see to this last issue before resting.

The door opened and Laiya, in her white robes, walked in and bowed. "Your Highness," she said.

"Yes, Sister, what can I do for you?" asked Rebecca.

"What did Lord Mordain have to say about your husband that was not important for my investigation?" asked Laiya firmly.

Rebecca was almost taken aback, but she suddenly realized the woman had a good point. "I am sorry, Sister," said Rebecca.

"It is quite alright, your Majesty," said Laiya. "I ask only that I be informed of what you and Lord Mordain spoke of, to help my own search for the King."

"Mordain and the Seekers found a mercenary who participated in the capturing of James," said Rebecca. "He said they turned him over to a ship which sailed away from the northwest coast."

Laiya nodded thoughtfully. "That could mean they sailed to Rifelindor...or even Ahm-Shere," said Laiya quietly. "Was there anything else that Lord Mordain spoke about?"

"Just about the necromancer who attacked the city," said Rebecca. "He presented me with a confession which the man signed."

At this Laiya furrowed her brow. "My Queen, the Seekers are notorious for their torture techniques. A signed confession means only that they tortured him to the point at which he would do anything. There is as much chance that they simply forced a false confession as that he was the true assailant."

This news hit Rebecca hard; Laiya was right, she knew. From the short time in Weissland and her conversations with others, including Mordain himself, it was obvious that the Seekers did not hesitate to use any means to pursue the law. What Laiya had said about torturing was right as well, Rebecca knew. While doubt creeped into her mind, she collected herself outwardly and said, "Lord Mordain told me of the confession and showed me the paper signed by the necromancer. I will trust him until he gives me reason not to."

"My Queen, he is hiding something," said Laiya, almost in a whisper.

"Sister, I can hear no more of this," Rebecca said. "Unless you have some sort of proof, then I will not be inclined to do anything about this. Please, I wish to retire for the afternoon."

Laiya was silent for a moment, then bowed respectfully. "Of course, your HIghness." She walked out of the room, leaving Rebecca to sit back down on the bed.

Nathaniel sat down and said "Yes, I found three who are suitable to the task. So far they have found very little, the monks do very little and their teleportation is problematic. Mostly their leader seems to spend much time with the queen while most of the other monks sit in that sanctuary of theirs. Unfortunately I think we'll have to wait for the monks to make a move before we learn anything much."

"Yes, she has been sticking very close to the Queen. It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" He sighed and leaned over the desk. "If only it were that simple." His head rose and snapped to Nathaniel. "I have reported our progress to the Queen, and she will inform Laiya. That cannot be helped, for now. However I neglected to mention that the King may be in Ahm-Shere. That information is not to go beyond me, yourself or Marr, not until we have something concrete. I cannot be sure of what the Queen would do if she heard even the slightest indication that King James is in Ahm-Shere. Until we are certain, we will not report that."

Nathaniel nodded but asked "Do you think if the Queen learned that she would try to declare war with Ahm-Shere?"

Mordain shook his head slowly. "The Queen is a new mother in love who wants her son's father returned. That kind of passion clouds the mind. I am not certain of anything, but I cannot rule out the possibility. If that was the course of action she wanted to take then all those eligible to give counsel would try to convince her not to follow through. But if war is what she would lead us to, I at least want to make sure it is for a good reason, not mere speculation."

Nathaniel replied "Indeed, the last thing Weissland needs is to engage in another war on faulty information."

"And to alienate another ally." said Mordain. He still felt fury towards the Defiled Kingdom, beyond the norm, for tricking Weissland into fighting the White Realm and thus forfeiting their strongest ally that could have helped them during the war. He had visited his wrath upon the Realmers, believing it had been justified, but it had not. "My men have started searching the city for information on this Ahm-Sheran girl. Nothing has been recovered yet, though. It is definitely a tricky situation; we must find information on her, but we cannot be too aggressive about it or the Queen, and the monks, will start asking questions. The Seekers have been told to keep their investigation discreet and out of the earshot of the monks, but that hampers our chance of success."

Nathaniel suggested "If she stayed here any length of time she likely stayed in an Inn or tavern. I doubt the monks would frequent such, which limits the chance of them hearing of this."

"Good point."

There was a knock on the door and then Marr entered. "Lord Mordain," he said as he saluted, before giving a courtesy nod to the Seeker, "Nathaniel." He walked over to the desk. "My Lord, men of the Legion have arrived as you commanded. Four hundred of them."

Mordain nodded. "Good. They are needed."

"If I may ask, Lord Mordain, what do you need them for?"

Mordain folded his arms and sat back in the chair. "Several things. Things that, again, must remain in this room." He looked between the two men before continuing. "Firstly, I want to dispatch a hundred of them to the north-west coast. They will be kept merely as reserves who can be ready to step-in if necessary. Second," he sat forward, "I want to strengthen the defences of this stronghold. The monks have flaunted the authority of the Seeker Order before. If we are not around to stop them, I worry that they would see fit to march in here and make themselves privy to whatever information they felt entitled to. That cannot happen, I will not let that happen. The Legion guarantee security. Only the Royal Guards could hope to defeat them in battle."

"I see." replied Marr. "Anything else? You have brought a lot of them."

"Yes, there is one more thing. A hundred will go to the coast, two hundred and fifty will remain here, and another fifty will take something of mine to Carak. It is an item that I must put into safekeeping, far beyond the reach of the monks." He looked up at Marr. "I want you to personally lead this group, Marr."

"Mordain," exclaimed Marr, somewhat taken-aback. "I am of more use here! Not running errands."

"You are of use as I dictate, Marr." hissed Mordain. "Do not forget the chain of command. You will do as I command. There can be no slip-ups. I will send Shadow Mages with you as well."

"What would you have me transport that is of such importance?" asked Marr, clearly frustrated.

"A memory sphere. It contains the truth about the necromancer's confession. The monks cannot be allowed to find it, and Carak offers the most secure hiding place for it. You will take it there and bury it deep within the depths of the prison."

Mordain looked directly at Nathaniel. "The monks have no standing in our government. Their only authority, as commanded by the Queen, lies in the investigation into the disappearance of the King. Beyond that they have no place in Weissland. Yes, Nathaniel; if they tried to enter Carak, they would be committing treason. I would not hesitate to have them arrested." His eyes shot to Marr and narrowed. "They have already gotten away with treason once."

"What would you of had me do, Lord Mordain?" asked Marr.

Mordain slammed his fist off the desk. "Assert your authority! Remind them of the power of our order!" He sat back. "They defied the chain of command once. They will be stupid enough to do so again. When that happens, they will have gone too far."

"It might be dangerous, and you might not want to risk something this important, but," Nathaniel said "perhaps it would be useful to send a decoy to Carak instead, have the monks learn of it. Give them a little nudge into their own downfall."

"Until we know more about them," he looked at Nathaniel, "I would not want to remove them. It is a sound plan, and I have no doubts that it would work, but as of yet we do not know if they are a threat to Weissland. Fools and blowhards they may be, but that is not enough to clarify my suspicions. But a form of decoy would be useful, to mask the true purpose of the trip. Marr," he moved his gaze back, "take three necromancers from our holding cells with you. If questioned then prisoner transport is all you will be doing."

Marr shifted his jaw as if he was about to protest again, but ultimately decided to let the point slide. Mordain was in command, after all. "As you command, my Lord."

Mordain kept his cold stare fixed on Marr for a few moments more before speaking. "You are dismissed. Gather the forces you require and prepare the prisoners. Once that is done I will give you the orb."

Marr turned and left without a word.

"Should the monks own arrogance lead them to interfere with this then I will not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law and my authority down upon them." said Mordain. "But until we know for sure which side they are on, it will be best to play by their rules. Laiya would have the Queen tear the Seekers apart if she were to learn that we had tricked them."

Nathaniel nodded "Very well." He was just about to say something else when a spell sphere appeared and spoke to him. It had been sent by one of the Watchmen he had requested check into the monks movements.

It had been designed for his ears alone, but with a subtle manipulation Nathaniel opened the spell sphere so Mordain could hear as well. The person on the other end said "I've just gotten this information and it is accurate. A group of monks have left Asulien and travelled to Rifelindor. They seem to be searching the region. I don't have a definite number of them, but it seems to be at least a dozen."

Drakkon replied "Thank you for bringing this to my attention, keep up the good work my friend."

The spell sphere ended and Drakkon looked up from it towards Mordain and said "It seems the monks are beginning to investigate rather than just preach."

((Figured I'd pop this in here rather than leaving and returning. Also, just a note, whenever we move on to tomorrow I'm gonna have Loter request an audience with the Queen to try and get the council thing rolling.))

((Ok, sounds good.))

"But in Rifelindor? What could they know that would suggest the King is there?" He sat back and clasped his hands. "That accursed woman accuses me of withholding information, but it would seem I am not the only one do so. It is not surprising, though. Perhaps their gods directed them there, perhaps their prayers have been answered." The final sentence was drenched in disdain. "I will never understand their faith." He spoke the last bit under his breath, more to himself than Nathaniel. But then he looked to the man again. "Can you think what would drive them there?"
