"You make a good point, Lord Arthious. I have considered this, but for now I am going on what I know. I know that the undead force we faced was around two-hundred-thousand strong. It is likely, however, that the Dark Lord will bolster his forces when he learns that we have reached the fortress-city of Asulien." Then, he turned to the mercenary. "Can you be sure that your men will not fall to the undead, Zach? Can they be relied upon to bring word to us in time?"
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"They're good scouts, milord," he replied. "Even if they are hunted down by Nathremal, some of them will make it back."

James listened carefully to the other leaders, and then leaned forward. "I understand that you have ordered the construction of an outer ring of defenses around Asulien itself?" he asked Mordain. "Palisades and stockades?"

At that point the soldiers at the front were cut down before they knew what hit them. There the dark elves were, abandoning their concealment at last. At the same time, the two magic-users blasted holes in either side of the formation. Then all of a sudden they were hidden again, all but one. The lone figure, further on through the chamber, became clearer as he walked closer. The dark elf's skin was a pure snowy white, deathly pale, his long hair glossy black. He stopped about twenty feet ahead of them, one hand resting casually on the hilt of a large jet black sword and the other carrying a shield of bones.

Cyrredlues waited for them to react.

A swirling mass of black; half shadow, half smoke, seethed from the floor in the meeting room. It materialised into Mordus and he gave a curt nod to the gathered members.

"Forgive me, I am late. It would seem the dundgeons of this place are far more extensive than I realised." He said.
Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts for eternity.

((I was the one who suggested that. :P And no, I don't think there are any need for that yes if only people could be precise and detailed))

Mordain nodded to James. "Yes, Lord Castoden, as well as trenches. We will reinforce this city in any way we can. I am, of course, open to suggestion for other means of furthering defences."

-----

The two remaining Legion soldiers raised their weapons, waiting for the order to attack, or for their enemy to make a move.

Brae drew his weapons, but made no offensive move.

Korth stood perfectly still beside Arhaina. He made no movement whatsoever, not even a breath.

"What of magical defences?" Solo Fryysen asked. When Mordain turned his head to him, the white-haired mage lord made a courtly bow and smiled to the elf. "It's been a long time Mordain. What magical enchantmens have you, or any of your order, used on the walls, if I may ask?"

There were three more men of the Order left, and they all held their weapons horizontally in front of them now. Their halberds had three triangular blades over parts of the shaft where they could grip underneath and use it as a handguard. The blades allowed them to use the otherwise unwieldy weapons effectively up close.

"Drop the sword," Khanden said. "Now."

Still, Kalon just stood there, unmoving. Arhaina felt a shiver run down her spine as she looked at the small piece of the blade which was outside the cover of its scabbard.

Ignoring Khanden entirely, Kalon drew his weapon slowly and smoothly, then he pointed it towards Korth. Then he said in his deep voice. "You. Come closer."

Korth's lips curved into a smile. He walked forward, past the Royal Guard, but stopping just infront of him. He stood in the chamber with Kalon.

"You filthy scum. Your betrayal has not been forgotten by me, even if the rest of us our dead and gone."

In the next instant, Korth's hand shot to his left, gripping a dark elf by the throat and pulling him close. The druid broke the elf's neck without a moment's hesitation.

"And if you think your pawns are going to stop me, or that wretched blade of yours, then you are sorely mistaken, Kalon. You will pay!"

-----

Mordain gave Solo a nod of recognition before speaking. "None, as of yet. I favour techniques such as placing magical runes to act as traps for the enemy, but the minions of the Dark Lord possess very powerful magic. Perhaps some sort of warding spell would help to stem the undeads' advance?"

"I'm curious as to how you survived. Most druids had some wisdom in them if nothing else, and yet you seem to think you can achieve something by impaling yourself on by sword... So tell me, how did you reach this land?"

Korth held the gaze of his enemy, showing no fear, for he felt none. "You have your secrets, betrayer, and I have mine."

Behind the druid, Brae held his weapons ready. He looked from Korth to Khanden, to Arhaina. He didn't like this, not one bit.

"So all of your knowledge will be lost and wasted when you die. A pity," Kalon said, shaking his head. "Well in that case, you are of no use to me. Girl," he said, pointing at Arhaina with his sword this time. "Come here."

"When I die, Kalon, you will be long gone, forgotten in the pages of time." retorted Korth, though still remaining calm.

Arhaina stood still and failed to mask her fear, trembling once again. Those grey eyes held their gaze as he listened to Korth's words, those eyes more frightening than any weapon he could hold.

"Come here, Arhaina. Come here, and I will put away the sword and spare your friends."

((Agh! ))

"Milord, with all due respect, we should abandon preparing any outer defenses," said James. "The ring is too wide and too hastily-built to defend effectively. All we will be doing is wasting valuable manpower delaying the inevitable siege of the city. Any troops we station there will be little more than a bump in the road for Drathmor's army."

Brae put his arm out across Arhaina.

"Come and get her!" he boasted.

Korth smirked. "Yes, Kalon. If you want her, come and claim her."

-----

Beneath his cood, Mordain arched an eyebrow. "Then what would you suggest, Lord Castoden?"

"As you wish," he said, and started to walk forward, slowly but steadily, raising the sword as he did so. Khanden moved back to the front again, ready to fight.

----

Elandir, Ithrain, Narandar and Renaulin finally reached the way down to the tunnels. Ithrain led the way now, trying to sense them out as the concealing magic radiated from them. The other three all had already drawn their swords, as much in wariness as in still-present mistrust of Ithrain.
