They walked in silence until they reached the stronghold.

"An abandoned prison. Most of the prisoners escaped during the battle against the Dark Lord's armies. It gives us a new place to work from." He said as they walked through the gates. He looked to Nathaniel, "How much do you know of what has happened?"

-----

Mordain walked through the palace. He was eager to get this business over with, but wary of what the outcome would be. The guards outside the Queen's room looked at him as he approached.

"Tell the Queen that I have returned. I must speak with her." said Mordain.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

The Guardsman nodded, and opened the door. He was gone for a moment, and then opened the door again and motioned for Mordain to come inside. Rebecca was sitting at a desk in the room now, staring absently out an open window, the sunlight falling upon her face.

Nathaniel looked around at the building as he replied "Only that the King was taken where he and Kassal were camped in Ledek's Span, the Queen removed Kassal from his position and the monks of Aracen are doing their level best to be obstructive, problematic, condescending, arrogant, and several other words which are a great deal less polite. As well as the Queen charging both the Seekers and the monks with all authority necessary to find the King."

Mordain walked closer to the desk yet stopped at a respectful distance. "Your Highness." He said, giving a slight bow.

-----

Marr nodded. "That is the sum of things, yes. Come. We shall speak with Kassal, although be warned that the Queen has assigned him a monk to act as a baby sitter. We must tread carefully; I don't want to give the monks anything to use against us." He walked down the hall to an empty cell that they had turned into an interrogation room. All of their 'equipment' had been removed before Kassal arrived. He was in no danger here and there was no reason to intimidate him. Marr entered with Nathaniel following and closed the door. Kassal sat before them on a simple chair with his bodyguard lingering at the back of the room. "Mr. Kassal," began Marr as he sat down opposite him. "I believe you know Nathaniel Drakkon?"

Without looking at him, Rebecca asked, "What is it, Lord Mordain?"

------------------------------------------

Kassal nodded. "Good afternoon."

"I am told Lady Laiya has suggested that the people be told of what has befallen your husband. I offer my opinion, your Highness; that would not be a wise move." said Mordain.

-----

Marr laid his hands on the table between them. "What we need, Kassal, is as detailed an account of what happened that you can give." The door opened and another Seeker entered with parchment and ink. "Tell us what you remember and my associate here will write it down."

"Why?" asked Rebecca.

----------------------------

"There is little to be said," Kassal said. "A lone rider approached our campsite. We armed ourselves, but the rider was dressed as a soldier of Weissland, claiming to bear a message from Asulien. No sooner had we received the soldier than we were surprised by two men from the rocks above us I presume. They used ropes to strangle the King and myself, and I was knocked out."

"The people have incredible faith in the King. He defeated Drathmor, saved this land from an eternity spent in darkness. If they were to learn that he had been taken from us, and so easily, then they would despair. He is the saviour of Weissland who gives the people hope for rebuilding. Telling everyone that he has been taken would achieve nothing. It would likely send the country into disarray, but keeping it a secret will keep things going. It would not be hard to conceal."

-----

Marr looked to Kassal. "Answer Nathaniel's questions, Mr. Kassal."

"My husband was a very public face," said Rebecca. "What will we attribute this sudden dearth to?"

"He was...forgettable," said Kassal. "And yes, he was a Weisslander."

"The King has been out of the public eye for a time, your Highness, by hunting down the remaining necromancers that plague our nation. Allowing the people to believe that he is still doing just that would be good for them, and it would be a simple thing to fabricate."

-----

Marr sat back in the chair. "What of his clothes, and the condition of his mount? Did he bear the marks of someone who had travelled from Asulien, or did he look like a man who hadn't travelled very far at all? If he was close by when the ambush took place, then perhaps we will find a clue in the surrounding cities and towns."

"It was dark, there was little light," said Kassal. "But no, perhaps he did not look too worn or tired."

((I don't suppose we've made any headway on recovering the map?))

Marr nodded. "Then that is a starting point. What of those who attacked you? Did you catch any glimpse of them, any words, anything?"

Kassal shook his head. "Nothing."

------------------

"What of the army?" asked Rebecca. "Would they not know something is off?"

((No, I don't think so unfortunately.))

"Is there anything, anything else, that you can give us to go on?" He looked to Nathaniel, as if prompting the man to present any further questions that he had.

-----

"They could be fooled. If we claimed that the King's crusade had taken him far to the south, or the west perhaps, then we could keep things hidden. Documentation could be put together quite quickly to create a new army unit; assign them to the King, no one would know because there would be no one to ask. My Seekers can create profiles for every member of the unit and place them in back records, as if they have been there for years. The army is far too vast for every soldier to know every other soldier. If one man thinks to himself that he has never heard of this army unit then he will merely assume that someone else has."

Nathaniel asked "Can you give us the specific location of your camp? I'm sure the Seekers have a map of the Ledek area. Any tracks will be gone by now, but there could be other clues."

"A day's ride into the Span from the south," said Kassal.

-------------------------------

Finally, Rebecca turned to look at Mordain. "What if my husband is never found? What if someone learns the truth? What will we do then?"

"I can have a group of Seekers there within two days. You should go with them, help them pin-point the location." said Marr, looking at Kassal.

-----

"If enough time passes, then it may become wise to inform the population of what has happened. But to tell them so soon serves no one. The people cannot handle this, a mere year after the fall of Drathmor. This is the world of politics, your Highness. It is not an honest one. It is not a world where things are cast in black and white, right and wrong. It is a place where the 'greater good' has true meaning." He sighed. This was not something he had ever wanted, or expected, Rebecca to be a part of. She was inexperienced, too inexperienced. But she was also the Queen. Loyalty was not subjective, not for Mordain. "Should anyone learn the truth, then they should be silenced. For a time. But I will do my best to ensure that it never comes to that. The Seekers are very good at what they do. You must make tough decisions, your Highness; decisions that I presume you never imagined having to make. But this is the hand we have been dealt. Now we must deal with it as best we can."

Kassal nodded. "I can go there."

--------------------------

Rebecca turned away from Mordain. "I will make no decision now."
