Looking at Marr, the Queen said, "Lord Marr?" Looking between the two arrivals, Rebecca said, "I have a feeling, by your looks, that this is related."

"It is, your Highness." He gestured to Laiya. "Lady Laiya and the monks of Aracen have Mr. Kassal in their temple. I dispatched Seekers to retrieve him for questioning. My order need to be aware of every detail if we are to mount an effective investigation. Lady Laiya denied the authority of my men and refused to allow Mr. Kassal to go with them. That, your Highness, is a direct violation of Weissland's laws and an insult to the nation itself. I would ask that you have the monks release Mr. Kassal into my custody."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Rebecca turned to Laiya and said, "Sister Laiya, what do you have to say?"

"We cannot be sure of the Seekers' intentions," said Laiya. "The Seekers are well-known for their brutality and their less-then scrupulous methods. Captain Kassal is a good man, an honest, loyal man. I would not see harm done to him."

The Queen nodded and looked at Marr again. "Lord Marr?"

"He is not a captain anymore, Lady Laiya." said Marr before returning to the Queen. "We have no need to harm Mr. Kassal, just as he has no need to withhold information. And I would prefer that our techniques and ability to do the task you have handed to us was not subjective to what the monks consider to be fair. Your Highness, you gave them authority to find your husband just as you did to us, but that does not rank them above the Seekers. There is no justification for keeping Mr. Kassal from us. That, as I have said, is illegal."

Rebecca thought for a moment. "Kassal was not able to protect my husband, but I would not see him punished for it," she said. "You may take him from the care of the monks and question him about what happened. Sister Laiya."

Bristling at the news, Laiya asked, "Yes, my Queen?"

"Is there a spell you can work which will tell you if he is harmed?" asked Rebecca.

"There is," said Laiya, "but such things can be fooled."

Rebecca nodded. "Then you may send one of your own to ensure he is not harmed. Is that agreeable, Lord Marr?"

"If I may be frank, your Highness, it saddens me that my word is not enough. The Seekers follow their orders; we do not lie to our superiors. But, if it is your will then we shall abide by it." Marr turned to leave. "Is there anything else, my Queen?"

"That is all," said Rebecca. "Please leave me, both of you."

"My Queen, there are other matters to discuss," said Laiya.

Rebecca sighed as Laiya said this. "I feared as much."

"We must decide how to deal with this matter with the populace," said Laiya.

Marr folded his arms by the door. He was curious to see what Laiya would propose.

"What can be done?" asked Rebecca.

"Little," said Laiya. "The people must be informed of what has happened. If we cover it up, or lie, the people will find out eventually, and it will not go well when they do. We must tell them of the King's absence, and also of your rule as a continuation of your husband's until he is found or returned. There must be no question that the country will not miss a beat, or that there is a lack of power on the throne."

Marr cleared his throat before speaking. "I am no politician, your Majesty, but if you wish further counsel on the matter then I would ask that you wait for Lord Mordain to return before announcing anything. He has served Weissland for a long time. His input could prove valuable on such a matter."

"I would estimate two days at the most, but likely less. My Lord knows of the dire situation we have found ourselves in. He will waste no time in returning."

Marr gave a slight bow. "Very good, my Queen. I shall inform him of what must be done when he returns." He then turned and left the room.

--Enters from Ledek's Span--

It had been almost two days of solid riding. Mordain had used some protection magic to prevent their mounts suffering fatigue. But now they were back. As they passed through the gates, Mordain looked around. He had not been here since Shaellana's death. Grim memories of his battle with Mordus flashed through his mind, but now was not the time for such thoughts. He was, however, surprised to see Marr waiting for him just past the gate.

"What is it, Marr?" he asked as they approached.

Marr smiled. "It is good to see you, my Lord."

Mordain dismounted and walked closer. "I have no time for pleasantries, Marr. There is much that must be done. Now, what is it?"

The man eyed Mordain's companions quickly and checked the surroundings to make sure no one else was in earshot. "The Queen requires your counsel." He leaned forward and whispered so that only Mordain could hear. "It is about the King. Lady Laiya suggests that the population be informed that their King has been taken. I asked the Queen to wait for your opinion."

Mordain nodded. "Very well. Is there anything else?"

"Yes. We have taken Bradely Kassal back to our stronghold here in the city, but there is a monk supervising. They have already shown that they intend to disrupt our investigation. They withheld Kassal from us at first. I had to speak to the Queen myself in order to secure his transfer to our facility."

The Mage of Shadows folded his arms. "They defied the authority of our order?"

"Yes sir. And now we must conduct our questioning of Kassal under their watchful eye. It troubles me, Lord Mordain. Perhaps you could speak to the Queen of such things?"

"I will. This will not stand, Marr. The Seekers have defended Weissland for decades. I will not have my men bow to a handful of zealous priests who merely crept out of the woodwork at the right time. It is insulting!" Mordain turned to Nathaniel. "I must speak with the Queen. What will you do?"

Nathaniel replied "I could go with the Seekers' base to await you, unless you think I might be helpful in convincing the Queen of a few things."

"I'm sure your reasoning would be of great help here, but it is not yet my place to invite others to that circle. I must first go the Queen alone; I do not know here as well as the King." He thought for a moment before speaking again. "Perhaps you could help Marr in questioning the former Captain of the Royal Guard? You can both report to me when I return, but do not release him without my express permission, no matter what those monks say."

Mordain nodded. "Very good. This may take a while, though. You have been warned." He climbed back on his horse and moved on, towards the palace.

-----

Marr turned to the others. "Come, I will show you to the Seeker base." He walked away in the direction of the stronghold and gestured for the others to follow.

Nathaniel followed Marr as they made their way to the Seeker base with the Seekers that had accompanied them to Ataya.
