Marr took a moment, thinking things over within his mind. He moved over to the table and looked down at the note Lord Mordain had given him. Then, folding his arms, he turned back to the King. "Lord Mordain moves towards Carak Prison." he sighed before continuing. "I doubt you will have been informed of that place yet... only the Seekers, and your Royal Guards, know of it." |
|
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

James nodded; it was obvious Marr had been suspicious of his motives. "Your loyalty to Lord Mordain is commendable; thank you for trusting me. Do you know why Mordain is heading there?" |

"I would expect for safety. Few strongholds in Weissland can match the prison. It is where criminals are sent should the ruling body of the land decide that they must... disappear." he said. |

"You have been very helpful, Marr," said James. Looking at Kassal, he said, "Captain, let's get that eagle." "Aye, My Liege, this way," said Kassal. He led James and the two other Royal Guards out of the Seeker warehouse and through the city. Eventually they came to a mage who was in charge of the Eagles. "My Liege," said the mage, somewhat startled to see the King there. "How may I assist you." "I need an Eagle, and quickly," said James. "Yes, My Liege," said the mage. "This way." He led the King through an archway and into a wide circular enclosure without a roof where several Eagles were waiting. Summoning one of the riders with a wave of his hand, the mage said, "This man will take you where you need to go." "Thank you," said James. "Please, My Liege, climb aboard," said the rider as he himself mounted the Eagle. James did so, along with Kassal as the rider asked, "Where do you need to go?" "Do you know where Carak Prison is?" asked James. "No, My Liege," said the rider, looking disappointed. "I do," said Kassal. "I will tell you where to go." "Very good," said James. --Leaving Asulien-- --Entering Carak Prison-- |

--Entering from Carak Prison-- James arrived in the city after a long flight from the prison. It was nighttime, and he headed with Kassal straight back to the palace. He made his way upstairs and into his and Rebecca's bedroom and found her lying in bed, though she sat up as soon as he walked in. "James," she said tiredly, but with a wide smile on her face. He walked over to her and planted a kiss on her lips before he climbed into bed. As she snuggled up against him and he held her, he said, "Rebecca, I am going to have to leave soon." "How soon?" she asked. "Tomorrow at some point," he said. "It will take some time to assemble the troops and get them marching, but we will be heading west. There is another necromancer there that I have to deal with." "How long will you be gone?" asked Rebecca. "Hopefully not too long," said James, stroking her hair. "A few days most likely." "Hurry back," she said, drifting off to sleep against him. |

Elandir's eyes scanned the merceneries once more, and his lips curved almost to a smile for a moment as he realised history was going to repeat itself. Narandar was first to join him, and the force swelled in size. Though he said little, his expression gave the impression of sadness. That wasn't unusual for him, after what his brother did, but he held up his banner as he rode with an ever-present pride as well. Lathaon's banner. His men had the look of grizzled veterans; many had fought in the White War and all had played a part in holding off Drathmor's army. When Zach and Renaulin brought the last of the merceneries, they found the rest all mounted and ready. Elandir meant to make haste. Now Brae, Zeal and Korth were all they waited for. |

With Korth following, Brae entered the warehouse where Marr and Zeal stood, still discussing what should be done with the Seekers in the wake of Drathmor's destruction. Marr was quick to spot them, though, and turned to greet them. "Ah, Brae. Good of you to-" He stopped when he spotted the old elf behind him. "Korth?" He asked, somewhat dumbfounded. "Korth, is that you?" "Yes, my friend, it is I." replied the druid, moving forward to clasp hands with Marr. "What are you doing here?" "Brae brought me here, to battle the dark elves." "Dark elves?" queried Marr, now confused. "I didn't see you battling any of those that served Drathmor?" Korth's face darkened. "As the armies of Weissland clashed with the hordes of the Great Necromancer, we were locked in combat in the catacombs, against a dark elf force led by Kalon himself." "Kalon was here?" "Yes." said Brae, jumping into the conversation. "His forces have laid siege to Lathor and he's taken Arhaina prisoner. And..." he looked around before he spoke, and lowered his voice when he next opened his mouth, "Lord Lathaon is alive." "Impossible!" exclaimed Marr. "Drathmor slew him in-" "I know it's difficult to believe, even harder to understand, but the Archmage lives! And should we be surprised? Only a fool would doubt Lord Lathaon's magic." Marr looked over at Zeal then lightly shook his head as he attempted to take in all of the new information. It was Zeal who spoke up next. "You still haven't said why you're here, Brae?" "Ah, yes. Elandir is gathering a force to travel to Rathor, in the hope of doing something about the dark elf invasion. Korth and I, as well as the Archmage, will be going with them. We were hoping you would join us, Zeal?" The old Dragon Lord looked from Marr, then down to Kristian. The boy was sleeping in an armchair off to the side of the room, and by the looks of it, it was the first time he had slept in days. "What do you think?" He asked, looking at Marr. "We cannot abandon the high elves. You should go. I will assign a number of Seekers to go along with you." "Is that wise?" asked Korth. "What do you mean?" "As I understand it, no one is yet sure how the new King's administration will work. Elandir's force is mainly mercenaries. Should the Seekers be seen to be aiding them? Lathaon looked to Elandir as an advisor, a friend and an ally. The King may not be as... open to the mercenaries." Marr nodded. "Very well, the Seekers will stay. But," he fixed the three men with a tough gaze, "should you need any help, do not hesitate to call for reinforcements. I will not let the high elves suffer under their dark cousins simply to preserve a reputation." Brae nodded. "Don't worry Marr, we won't." With that, he and Korth turned to leave. They stopped at the door and waited as Zeal said a handful of final words to Marr. "Bring a mage down here, Marr. You may need a magic-user to defend the boy against this 'Krodalis'." Marr nodded. "I will. Good luck in Rathor, and be careful." "I will. Farewell, my friend." The three men began walking the streets of Asulien. "What now, Brae?" asked Zeal. "Now? Now, we need to find Elandir." |

((Like any one magic-user would really stand a chance ))Elandir was not as disappointed as Renaulin had thought he would be. It seemed he was thinking more of the implications of Raila Mirndon taking command. She had been an old enemy of his, but had survived when Mehrak had not. Still, Elandir knew there were more important matters to deal with at the moment. Elandir would have to bring back his network as well, but that could wait too. The majority of his contacts were still out there, but information had stopped flowing like it had in the past, and that had been his greatest tool whether Castoden realised it or not. The Seekers might supply some, if their ties to Mordain did not prevent it, but not so much as a dedicated spy network. |

((They don't know that ))It did not take as long as Brae had expected to find Elandir, and when he did he saw that the elf had gathered a good number of allies to their cause. Brae, followed by Zeal and Korth, approached the mercenary captain. "Elandir," he said, giving a small wave, "I've brought Korth and Zeal; both will help us." |

Elandir visibly relaxed, yet still seemed slightly tense. "Excellent. Thank you. There should be a couple of spare horses for you and Korth," he said. He turned to Zeal. "I trust you will not be needing one?" ((check inbox)) Edited by Lathaon, May 25 2010, 04:12 PM.

As morning dawned, James awoke to find Rebecca already up, her head on his chest and looking at him. "Good morning love," she said quietly. "Good morning," he replied, kissing her forehead. "You're up early." "I couldn't sleep much," she said. "Why not?" asked James, concerned. "I'm worried about the way things are going," said Rebecca. "Another necromancer? And so soon?" "Drathmor's forces were mostly destroyed," said James. "But there were those who were able to hold their own forces together. We have to rid Weissland of those men." Rebecca sighed. "I understand, but that doesn't help my worries." James kissed her again and climbed out of bed. He began to don his armor, starting with his chainmail before strapping on the brilliant white-silver blessed armor. "James," said Rebecca. "I fear there is something else going on." "What do you mean?" asked James, turning to look at her. "I have had dark dreams," she said. "Dreams about the whole world falling under black clouds." Concerned, James walked over to the bed and hugged her as she climbed out towards him. "Why haven't you told me about these?" "I...I don't know," said Rebecca. James held her tightly and said, "We are working to stop that from happening, to stop Krodalis before he can regain all his power." "James..." said Rebecca, her voice faltering. "In my dreams...everyone fails." |

Rebecca's words haunted James as he descended the stairs of the palace, with Captain Kassal and another Royal Guardsman walking with him. He apparently was wearing his discomfort on his sleeve, for Kassal stopped at the door and said, "My Liege, is there something bothering you?" James looked at the Captain and thought a moment before shaking his head. "It's nothing." He made a move for the door, but Kassal defiantly put his hand across it, barring the way. James looked at him, and the grizzled veteran gave his king a look that James could not meet. "It's something Rebecca said." "If there is a problem with the queen, your highness, I could send word for another general to take the army to the field," said Kassal. "There is no need for you to go if you must be here." James, however, shook his head. "No, we're not having problems. She had a dream about everything that's happening. She said in her dream everyone fails in trying to stop what's coming." Kassal pushed the door opened and the three of them walked out, heading for the stables. "Anyways, I could not send the army out under someone else. I've always fought at the front, and the men know that; I can't let them down." Kassal nodded as they reached the stables. "I understand, my Liege." They mounted their horses, and James asked, "Is the army assembled?" "Yes, my Liege," said Kassal. "They are formed on the plains outside the city." James nodded and the three of them rode out of the gates, emerging to see a force of twenty thousand men arrayed on the plains, their speartips and helmets glistening in the early morning sun, while the tunics over their chainmail made a sea of blue which stretched out over the grass. James rode over to General Mardis, a veteran soldier who had fought under James in the White Realm and Weissland; following the war, James had promoted him to General and given him command of the Royal Battalion. As James approached, Mardis saluted him and James returned the salute. "General," said James. "My Liege," said Mardis. "Are the men ready?" asked James. "Of course, your highness," said Mardis. "Good," said James. "Take command and move them out." "Aye, my Liege," said Mardis. As James rode to the center of the formation with the Royal Guardsmen, he heard the trumpet call go up to sound the advance, and the army stepped off. --Leaving Asulein-- --Entering Nairo-- |

--Kassal enters from Ledek's Span-- Kassal rode straight through until he reached Asulien, and headed immediately for the Royal Palace. He threw doors open and almost ran through the Palace as he made his way to the King and Queen's chambers. Outside, there were two Royal Guardsmen standing watch who snapped to attention as Kassal approached. "How is the Queen?" asked Kassal, breathing heavily from the exertion of rushing to the Palace. "It has been nearly a week since she gave birth, sir," said one guard. She has recovered for the most part, but has kept to her room mostly, tended by the nurses. "Good," said Kassal, and he made to open the door. "Sir, she asked not to be disturbed except by her husband..." started the other guardsman, but Kassal ignored him, pushing the door open and striding inside. Rebecca looked over with a start at the suddenness of the door's opening. She was cradling the newborn boy, Kassal noticed, and they both looked healthy indeed. "Captain Kassal?" asked Rebecca, surprised and involuntarily pulling Cullen close to her chest protectively. "Forgive my intrusion, my queen..." started Kassal. "Where is James?" asked Rebecca, a sense of fear in her eyes, as if she knew immediately that something had happened. "Where is my husband?" Kassal tried to form words in his mouth, but he could not. He stumbled in his speech, only forming small noises as he tried to say something. "Where is my husband?!" screamed Rebecca, and Kassal could see tears forming at the edges of her eyes. Finally, Kassal was able to say, "He was taken...we were ambushed by men dressed as soldiers." "No!" screamed Rebecca, tears beginning to run down her cheeks. "No! No!" As she cried out, however, Kassal noticed something was changing in the queen. She almost seemed as if she had a faint glow about her, and then all of a sudden, a pulse of light burst forth from her. It slammed the windows open and slammed the door shut, rustling everything else in the room and causing Rebecca to stop crying and fall over on the bed. At this point the baby Cullen began to cry, and Kassal rushed over to the bed as the two guardsmen burst into the room. Rebecca was passed out, and Kassal shouted, "Get Sister Laiya in here!" |

It was not long before one of the guardsman hurried back into the room with the blonde-haired, white-clad Sister Laiya Stalo, current leader of the Monks of Aracen, in tow. "What happened?" Laiya asked calmly, moving over to the bed. "She was informed that the King was taken on the road and she went into a panic," said Kassal. "The King was taken?" asked Laiya, putting her hand on Rebecca and beginning to call on divine magics for healing. "Yes," said Kassal. He looked around and said, "No word of this is to leave the room, not until the Queen has made a decision as to what is to be done about it." "Yes, sir," said one of the guards, and the other nodded. "It is no business of mine," said Laiya. "I will not say anything. What else happened?" "She then started to...glow...radiate...I don't know," said Kassal. "And then the room lit up and everything moved." Laiya's expression did not change, but Kassal could see it in her eyes that this had surprised her. "Is that all?" she asked. "Yes, she lost consciousness afterwards," said Kassal. "Very well," said Laiya. She chanted something and ran her hand over Rebecca's face, and the queen's eyes opened. "My Lady," said Laiya. "Sister," said Rebecca, startled. "Captain Kassal...what happened? Is James alright?" "My Lady, the King has been taken," said Kassal. "This is what I told you." At this, Rebecca's eyes began to well up with tears once again, and she threw Laiya's hand off of her, burying her face in the pillows and beginning to sob. "It is best that we leave," said Laiya, getting up and guiding Kassal towards the doorway. "Have some of her ladies in waiting remain just outside with the guards." "Yes, Sister," said Kassal. "Meanwhile, there are other things we need to discuss," said Laiya. "Come with me." "See to it that the ladies in waiting are sent for," said Kassal to the guardsmen before he followed Laiya down the corridors of the Palace, heading for the Chapel. Once inside the small Chapel within the Palace, Laiya closed the doors and walked with Kassal to the altar at the front. "What is this about, Sister?" "The queen has displayed a sensitivity to magic," said Laiya. "How is that possible?" asked Kassal. "I thought that such children were..." "She is from the White Realm," said Laiya. "Their magical teachings are not as advanced or coordinated as those in Weissland. Magic often manifests first by accident, or in times of extreme stress or grief. It is not unlikely that the Queen's magical talents have simply lay dormant her entire life until this point. Her father was Almirith Damorath, correct?" "That is true," said Kassal, nodding. "He is among the most noted magic-users to come from that country," said Laiya. "It is to be expected that at least some of his children received a portion of that gift." Kassal nodded, thinking. "Why are you telling me this in secret?" "Becoming a mage at an older age is a dangerous proposition, Captain," said Laiya. "Especially for someone in her position and given the circumstances. It would be very easy for her to fall into dark magics, or for people to prey on her sensitivities to exploit her new-found power. Mages are taught to control their abilities at a young age. The Queen has never been taught such control." "What do we do?" asked Kassal. "Tread carefully," said Laiya. "I will begin overseeing training for the Queen, but do not make it more public than it needs to be." "Very well," said Kassal. "I will do as you ask." |

The Seekers had moved from the warehouse. Given that Asulien was now the capital, it seemed logical to establish a more permanent base of operations for the Seekers. Marr stood in the new base. It was a disused prison, partially underground and very expansive. It served their needs very well. Things were being moved around and brought over. Marr knew he would need to send a force south to Ataya to recover items and documents left behind. And there would be prisoners to hunt down. Truly, the Seekers had their work cut out for them. Marr's first task was to try to rebuild what Lord Mordain had created. He walked down a corridor to his personal quarters at the far end. Kristian sat within on an arm chair. "What time is it, sir?" he asked. "The afternoon is drawing to a close." Marr walked over and pulled another chair round before sitting down in front of the boy. "I must find out why it is that Lord Mordain sent you here, to me. Is there anything you can tell me?" Kristian shook his head. "I don't know. It might have something to do with when I was younger, but I can't remember it." "No?" "None of it. The earliest thing I remember is waking up on the ship that I came from. Mordain- Lord Mordain was on the boat at one point, but I don't know what was said. The crew hid me below deck." Marr stroked his chin. "Then I suppose Lord Mordain will know." |
