The mage lords had not been entirely idle since their meeting with the King all those days ago. Many had lent their magical might to helping rebuild Asulien. Solo Fryysen especially, since he was assigned to Asulien, oversaw the removal of rubble and debris from the badly damaged outer portions of the city. The mage lords and mages left would use magic to lift chunks of masonry up and out of the way, clearing the way so new buildings could begin construction. Of those in Asulien mage lords Tidurion, Andros, and Amalrith remained to continue the rebuilding effort with Fryysen.

Vedgar was spending a lot of his time in the sanctuary with members of the Order of Light. The others saw little of him.

While Boralays and Mistrandar Alicant had taken part in the rebuilding and clean-up, they eventually resolved to head south to help out there. They would take a handful of the other mages who could be spared with them, and hopefully join up with Lord Aldron and King Castoden's forces to help in their rebuilding efforts.

Leading five mages of varying experience who had survived from the battle of Ataya to the final battle in Asulien, Boralays and Mistrandar said good-bye to the other mage lords before departing the city by horseback.

--((Boralays and Mistrandar)) Leaving Asulien--
--Heading for Ataya ((if there were any troops Aldron left at Ataya))--

Jane Sergares looked around at the shattered remains of the city. This part of the city had not been cleared up yet, but it had been chosen as the place she would leave from. A breached part of the wall lay ahead and while a barricade was manned at the breach, they could ride out from there. The young girl now sat on top of a horse, with a rider in armour behind her, holding her in place. The elven woman who was riding with Jane did not say much. In fact Jane had heard her say only one thing so far, and that was only "Yes sir!" Jane did not particularly like the woman, she had not even introduced herself.

On the orders of the mage lords Jane Sergares was to be escorted to Cerylia, specifically to her ancestral home in Asala. They would be stopping off in Adion first though. Sergares had overheard the part about this all being "by orders of the mage lords." She did not want to leave, or if she had to she wanted to return to Ataya, that was her home. Her mother had never even taken her to Asala before. Now she would never see her mother again, the mage lords had told her about what had happened.

The small escort of mounted troops rode through the section of barricade which had been moved aside in single file, and once they formed up properly beyond the walls, they began to gallop away south.

Marr paced around the room, having finally donned the heavy robe that identified him as the new head of law enforcement. The robe was dark, with patterns weaved into the fabric and a broad, raven insignia on the back. The boy, Kristian, was still with him, as was Zeal. The monks had left some time ago, thankfully, and Marr was left pondering over Mordain's letter.

"Krodalis... Zeal, do you know anything of this?" he asked.

The old sorcerer shook his head. "Can't say that I do. The monks seem to be very fearful of him, too. What did the letter say?"

"Lord Mordain wants reinforcements sent to the Seeker stronghold, a prison to the south west." he raised his hand to his chin. "I will dispatch a contingent of two hundred Seekers. My Lord will have all the help he desires." Marr looked around the room, but not one person spoke out against him. This was not out of fear, but out of respect, out of continued loyalty to Mordain. Marr, as far as he was concerned, was only acting in his new role. Mordain would always have command over the Seekers, and the Legion. "You," he said, pointing to a Seeker officer, "find sufficient numbers of Seekers and take them to the prison. Once there, you will answer to Lord Mordain."

The officer bowed. "Of course, Lord Marr."

Once the man was gone, Zeal spoke again. "Marr, what of this boy?" he asked, gesturing towards Kristian.

Marr looked from Zeal then down to the boy. "What is your name, lad?"

"Kristian, sir."

"Lord Mordain wants you kept safe. Do you know why?"

Kristian shifted uncomfortably where he stood. "Yes. There was... something in Amei, something that tried to kidnap me. Morda- I mean, Lord Mordain, saved me."

"Amei?" asked Marr. After all, Amei was a very far way away from Asulien.

Kristian nodded. "Yes, sir. There were monsters, three of them, and a... a shadow." He sniffed. "The city... Lord Mordain said that they would all die."

"What? Why?"

"One of the creatures. Lord Mordain said that it spread a plague throughout the city, and that there was nothing that could be done."

Zeal frowned beneath his hood. "Dark times." He looked over at Marr. "It seems we are far from free of the grip of necromancy. Keep Kristian here. I will stay and help."

Marr nodded. "Yes, Zeal is right, Kristian. You shall stay here with us. Lord Mordain wants you kept safe, even from the monks who brought you here, so I don't want you to leave this building. Not without an escort. Is that understood?"

Kristian simply nodded.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

--Entering from Aelendak--

James and his Royal Guard arrived in the city the following day. Favorable winds had carried the Navy ships quickly up the coast, and their swift horses had covered the rest of the way to Asulien. Arriving in the city, James, Kassal, and the other Guards made their way back to the Palace, where they put their horses in the stables. As James walked up the front steps of the palace, he saw Rebecca standing at the top, waiting for him with a smile.

"The warrior king returns," she said playfully.

Taking her in his arms, James kissed her and said, "Did you doubt me?"

"Never," said Rebecca, smiling. Looking at Kassal, she said, "I see you took good care of my husband."

"He took good care of us, Milady," said Kassal.

Taking James's hand, Rebecca led him back into the Palace, asking, "How did things go?"

"The battle was more difficult than I expected, but we were able to cleanse Aelendak for the time being," said James.

"For the time being?" asked Rebecca.

"We were unable to kill the necromancer, despite wiping out his army," said James. "He fled, but I have a feeling we will see him again, although it may be some time before he can marshal another force. How were things here?"

"Uneventful, for the most part," said Rebecca. "Although that young girl from Ahm-Shere is getting rather antsy in the guest quarters."

James sighed. "I had almost forgotten her," said James. "Perhaps I should go see her now."

"You don't want to rest first?" asked Rebecca, concern audible in her voice.

James looked at her with resignation and said, "I think I'm beginning to learn that kings don't rest."

Walking hand-in-hand with Rebecca, James came to the guest room where Alisha had been boarded while James was gone. James knocked on the door and waited until it opened and Alisha stood there. Seeing James still wearing full plate armor with spots of black blood spattered and stained across it, Alisha took a step back in surprise.

"As you can see, Miss Morlan, my army currently has troubles of its own," said James. "The War may be over, but small warlords still believe they can take some of our land and people for their own."

"Are you saying you are rejecting my request?" asked Alisha. "What about family?"

"I respect that your family has Castoden blood running through it, and I can understand your people's troubles," said James. "If you wish, you and your family may come to Weissland to live. I will set up arrangements for you to live in whatever part of the country you wish."

"That is not what we want," said Alisha angrily. "We want our own land, and we want it to be free from oppression, as you freed your land from oppression!"

"Do not think to compare your situation with ours!" snapped James. "I have been more than accommodating to you during this difficult time for our nation, but you have proved to be a rude guest. You may stay the night, but in the morning you will depart Asulien."

Alisha glared at James but said, "As you wish, your Highness."

James and Rebecca walked away from the door, which they heard close sharply, and made their way up to their bedroom. There, James took off his armor while he and Rebecca talked. As they were talking, Rebecca suddenly fell silent, and James looked at her, smiled and asked, "What?"

"James..." she said.

"Yes?" asked James.

Rebecca smiled widely. "I'm pregnant."

James rushed over to Rebecca and swept her up, spinning her around before placing her back on the ground and kissing her. "That's wonderful," said James. He picked her up again and carried her over to the bed, laying her down gently and kissing her.

Just then, however, there was a rap on the door, and James sighed, but then smiled and said, "Tonight, then."

"I'll be waiting," said Rebecca with a sly smile.

James got up and walked over to the door. Opening it, he found Kassal waiting there, saying, "My Liege, Sister Laiya wishes to speak with you; she says it is urgent."

"Very well," said James. Flashing one more smile at Rebecca, James stepped out and closed the door behind him. "So what is this about?" James asked as he and Kassal made their way to the throne room.

"She wouldn't say," said Kassal. They came to the throne room and found Laiya as well as some other monks waiting there for James.

James eschewed taking the throne, instead walking over to the monks. "Laiya, what can I do for you?" asked James. "Where's Kelan."

"Kelan Wealer is dead, My Liege," said Laiya.

"Dead, how?" asked James, somewhat taken aback. "What is this about?"

"I...killed him myself," said Laiya. "He...was no longer walking in Aracen's light."

James crossed his arms and furrowed his brow but nodded for Laiya to continue.

"We tracked Mordain across Weissland, engaging him several times," said Laiya. "We learned he was fighting an ancient evil known as Krodalis. I believed that we should join forces with Mordain to fight Krodalis, but Kelan was...blinded by his...hatred...for Mordain. He would have tried to kill Mordain had I not intervened. My Liege, I allowed myself to blindly follow Kelan because he had kept the Faith alive during the darkest of times, because we had followed him for so long. My Liege, I have made a terrible mistake."

Sighing deeply, James shook his head and looked down; he knew he should never have sent Mordain away. "No, Sister, I've made a terrible mistake."

"So who is this Krodalis?" asked James.

"An Ancient Evil, the Enemy of all Life," said Laiya.

James arched an eyebrow. "What does that mean?"

"I do not know," said Laiya. "We know precious little about him. There is no mention of him in Scripture or theological writings; only whispers of him passed down through the ages within our Order. We only know his names, and we can deduce from those the threat he poses."

"Is this like Drathmor?" asked James.

"No," said Laiya. "Krodalis will not assault Weissland with an army; I fear his methods will be something far different, something which blades and shields cannot stop. There is something else."

"Yes?" asked James.

"There is a boy," said Laiya. "Mordain directed us to bring him safely to Marr here in Asulien."

"Is there anything else?" asked James.

"No, My Liege," said Laiya.

Turning to Kassal, James said, "Captain."

"My Liege?" asked Kassal.

"Do you know where the Seekers have set up in the city?" asked James.

"Yes, my Liege."

"Let's go," said James.

Kassal waved his hand for two Royal Guards, who moved forward and began walking, one ahead of James and one behind, while Kassal and James walked through the Palace and out into the streets of Asulien. They made their way quickly through the city, and soon came upon a building with several Seekers patrolling inconspicuously about it.

Marr turned around when a number of Seekers entered the room, leading the King and some Royal Guards behind them. The large man moved over to James and bowed humbly before him.

"My Liege. What brings you to the Seekers?" he asked.

Zeal stood a few feet behind Marr, with Kristian in-turn standing behind him.

"I had a discussion with Laiya, the leader of the monks," said James. "I just returned to the city myself from Aelendak, where we defeated the forces of a rogue necromancer, but Laiya has informed me that we may have bigger problems than remnants of Drathmor's army."

Marr began pacing, but then shrugged. "I know nothing, sire. Only what the monks told me. They believe him to be a necromancer of sorts, I think."

James nodded. "Unfortunately they know only his names and reputation, but nothing beyond that. They said there is never any mention of him in their scriptures or writings, that all that remains are whispers passed down through the ages."

"Perhaps they are wrong." suggested Marr. "You yourself slew the Great Necromancer. Are we really willing to believe that there could be something even more dangerous than him lurking in the shadows of this world?"

James shrugged. "I don't know. I hope not." He paused for a moment and then said, "They also said Mordain told them to bring a boy here to keep him safe from this Krodalis. Did he say what the boy's importance was?"

Marr turned and gestured to Kristian. The boy walked forward to stand beside him.

"This is Kristian, sire. He is the one the monks brought here to me. And no, I'm afraid I do not know why he is important. Only that he is."

"I imagine so." He looked around once more before turning back to the King. "If I may, sire, why do you want to find him?"

"Several reasons," said James. "I want to find out what he knows about this Krodalis, what threat he poses and what Mordain thinks should be done. Second..." James paused and looked around, then took a deep breath. "I made a horrible mistake sending him away, regardless of the circumstances."
