Brae followed Elandir out of the sanctuary. The two slipped easily into the crowds, leaving no trace of their presence within the sanctuary.

"Where should we start looking for your men?" he asked.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"They are here already," Elandir said. "See the dark elven swords some of the men in the crowd are carrying?"

Zach found the pair quickly and approached them.

Brae took in what Elandir said, and indeed noticed people here and there with dark elf weapons.

He eyed Zach but said nothing as the man approached.

"Managed to find a fair few new recruits for the expedition," Zach said. "Did you try approaching the King or any of the Generals?"

"Better that we do not involve them. My influence has decreased lately, and not only that, I would not be surprised if Castoden tried to take a full army and burn Rathor to the ground if we pressed the issue on him," Elandir said. "Have you seen Renaulin?"

"No. No sign of him. Could he have deserted us?"

Brae was scarcely familiar with the names of Elandir's men. He knew that loyalty was hard to come by in the man's trade, but knew also that as far as mercenaries went Elandir controlled a good influence and a decent amount of loyalty. Besides, desertion now made little sense, save perhaps to go into hiding. It was doubtful that the new king would be favourable of mercenaries if he had been so quick to cast Lord Mordain aside.

The door opened and in came a slender woman wrapped in tight-fitting, only just opaque, robes. She looked very authoritative and also very pleased with herself.

"Ulrin is dead!" she announced.

Renaulin looked back at his opponent in panic.

"Looks like I can no longer hold my end of the bet," the man said, shrugging. "Not that I intended for the game to be over quickly enough for it to actually be possible."

The dark elf could not contain his anger. By the time his opponent had finished speaking, Renaulin was already up, smashing his chair over the man's head. To his fortune, Raila's news had already caused quite the commotion, and so he got the opportunity to seize a sword from the unconscious body...

Brae still stood silent. He didn't know enough about Elandir's operation to comment on whatever current events they were trying to deal with.

"I don't think so. His aims were the same as mine," Elandir said. "Send out search parties and find Ulrin's men. If he's run into trouble with the locals then there is little we can feasibly do about that, but those other mercenaries may be with him or may know his location."

Zach nodded.

The men were sent out in groups of three. They needed to cover a great deal of ground.

Renaulin lunged at the mage but was blown back by a blast of magic and dropped his sword.

"Kill him," Raila hissed, kicking the sword away. "Slowly."

The dark elf rolled to minimise the impact, and then leapt upon a table. "Ignore those orders!" he yelled. "Bar the doors and give me a weapon!"

"Could you get the Seekers to aid in the search, Brae?" Elandir asked. "I don't want to have to linger here much longer."

Brae nodded. "Yes, but we will need to be cautious. Without Lord Lathaon in power, official policy will be to arrest you on sight. The Seekers cannot be seen to be aiding you, or they may fall under doubts and criticism from the King's government."

"Then do what you can, and I will try to make contact with him and the defenders at Lathor. In any case, if I do end up arrested, let my men know to continue without me."

Brae nodded once more. "I will. Good luck."

With that, he turned and walked away.

"Go on then. Do it," Raila said. She glared at Renaulin as she walked steadily forward. "You are no match for me."

The doors were barred shut, Renaulin had an assortment of weapons on the floor before him, and the mercenaries formed a rough circle around the two.

Renaulin leapt down, toppling the table as he did so. He snatched up a spear.

"Come to your death, fool," Raila spat, conjuring her magic forth once more.

The dark elf threw the spear - but not for her, for the lantern hanging from above. There was a smash and the thin glass showered down, the candle inside going out. It was enough of a distraction that the mage's fireball hurtled off over Renaulin's head, bursting as it hit the wall. Flames licked up from the furniture and the floor.

Renaulin picked up a sword now, and lunged at Raila a second time.

Elandir's spell sphere slipped out of the shadowed corner he hid in. He climbed up to the roof of the building; not so high since it had only a single floor. The gaps between the stones were deep.

He crawled along the rooftop and sat down in a convenient corner where two roof slopes met at an angle, and a chimney provided him with a third concealed direction. The fourth looked over a narrow street.

((Ren may be easier to find now that the building is going up in flames :) ))

Brae had assembled a group of Seekers, as well as two Shadow Mages. They had caught sight of the burning building and moved with haste towards it. Weapons drawn, the first of the Seekers kicked open the door and passed through with six more quickly following. Brae entered to see the combat before him. With his weapons drawn, he moved forward.

"Stop what you're doing!" he roared.

The moment the door was unbarred as the mercenaries sought to escape the fire, it was kicked off its hinges by the Seeker. Raila gripped Renaulin's wrists and was chanting spell words, her fingers heating as she did so. Both seemed to be oblivious to Brae and his Seekers, but the rest of the mercenaries were divided in backing away and in rushing out the other exits.

Two Seekers moved forward and grabbed the woman by both arms, pulling her off her foe. Another was quick to raise his blade to the man's neck.

"Let the others go." said Brae. In truth, he did not believe there were enough Seekers with him to handle the remaining mercs, but the two he had here would suffice. He approached the man. "Renaulin?" he asked.

"This isn't over," Raila said as she slipped free. Then, in a flash of dazzling light, she was gone.

"She betrayed us," Renaulin said. "Ulrin is dead. And we'd better get out of here before the fire spreads further."

Brae nodded and moved towards the door, but stopped and looked back at him. "The Seekers cannot be seen to be helping you. For now, act like a prisoner, understand?"

He handed his weapon to Brae and nodded. He followed Brae through the doorway.

"My apologies for Ulrin's demise," the mysterious figure said, having been waiting outside a corner of the building with a handful of mercenaries in front of him. "I gathered a few loyalists as a parting gift," he said as he stepped around the corner and out of sight.

Brae took a step back given the change of events, and the Seekers drew their weapons.

"Do you know these men?" asked Brae, his hand on his weapon, speaking to Renaulin.

"I recognise most of them," the dark elf replied. "Several were under my command in the past."
