Brae took a cautious step forward but then shrugged. "Don't ask me. Magic has never been my area of expertise."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Elandir shrugged, drew his sword and slashed at the artefact, a jewelled metal rod. To his surprise, the thing yielded easily and snapped in two. Hearing a gasp for air, he turned to see Lathaon regaining movement.

Brae took a step back at Lathaon's sudden movements.

"Sir?" he asked carefully.

"That rod... It was draining the magic which now sustains me," Lathaon said. "Such traps were made for Kalon Cyrredlues, not for me..."

"Are you hurt?" Elandir asked, supporting the archmage as he stumbled forward.

"I should be dead," he said. He had gone paler and slimmer now. Aside from the lighter hair and features less sharp, he looked like a malnourished dark elf. "I have lost too much-" he coughed, "too much blood."

"You need help." Brae advised, stepping closer.

"My magic can act as a substitute for now," Lathaon said. "But I know of no permanent solution besides undeath or the blood of kin - and even if I wanted to accept it, Mordain's blood is far from pure. If you want to help, find me a focus circlet so I might sustain myself longer."

"I think most of them have been lost in battle or left in the tower," Elandir said. "But I took some of the things from your office - one of my captains has them now - perhaps something from there might help?"

"Perhaps. But I have little time left and I want to find Cyrredlues and punish him," Lathaon said. "And I want to say goodbye to Arhaina while I still have breath."

Brae was shocked; Lathaon was willing to roll over and accept death. That wasn't the Archmage he had once served. But, again, he kept himself in check.

"Then we should hurry."

"Can you still use your magic for other purposes?" Elandir asked. Lathaon nodded.

"We'll go back the way we came," Elandir said, leading them on but keeping aware of the archmage's state. "We should leave Ithrain to get caught. Hopefully that will draw suspicion away from us."

Brae said nothing. He was grateful that they had found Lathaon. Even with in his weakend state, the man gave Brae a link to what Weissland had once been, a time he longed for. Shaellana's death... Mordain's exile... The world he knew was fading quickly.

They began moving down the corridor, back towards Ithrain.

They passed him and reentered the room where the Casket lay.

"It is not nearly secure enough here, but there is nothing to be done for now," Lathaon said. "Why did you bring us here?"

"There is another entrance leading directly in here. Come on," Elandir replied, leading them back where he and Brae had come. "Medran told us."

The man held out his hand for Renaulin to pick one. That's how it worked the first time round - one of the cards in play was chosen by the opponent. Of course, they couldn't actually see which card they chose, so it made little difference. Renaulin pulled out the middle card and placed it down upon the table. The stranger copied him, then each placed another card down.

The dark elf knew the two cards in play were a Slave of Death, one of the lowest cards there was, and in contrast, the Lord Miraelon, one of the highest.

The stranger took the first turn, taking the offensive by placing a Champion of Death on Renaulin's Slave. His loss; a Champion was far from worth losing against a Slave, but perhaps that meant the stranger had a handful of strong cards.

Renaulin drew another card, a Slave of Blades. He cursed, silently, but put on a face of thought. A Slave was almost useless in the hand, so he put it into play.

"Is the card on my right higher than the card on my left?" he asked. The man nodded in response. He could have been lying, but he would forfeit the game if Renaulin found that to be so, and it was doubtful that a decent player would take such a risk at this stage of the game.

They moved on, down the back entrance that Medran had shown them. The exit loomed ahead.

"It doesn't open this way. You'll need to use your magic," Elandir said.

The wall opened with only the slightest amount of effort on Lathaon's part. The lit corridor beyond the gap was bright now to their eyes.

"We need to get you out of the City," the mercenary told him. "I'll explain later."

"My eagle can take care of that," Lathaon said. There was something about his expression, though, that suggested he was reluctant to travel in that way.

Brae was quick to notice the look on the Archmage's face. "My Lord, something is troubling you?" he asked, waiting for an answer before moving on.

"I cannot be ethereal and fly on an eagle at the same time," Lathaon said. "And being so helps keep me alive - but the journey from Ataya almost killed me. Is there any way we could leave unnoticed on foot?"

He faded, partially, then. It was natural for him now, just like walking. He had found that he could switch states with just a thought. It was not something he fully understood, but he suspected his time spent in the Plane of Death had torn at his physical and spiritual structure and that allowed him to take advantage of instabilities within himself.

"If you can become ethereal, could you not pass through the walls of this city? We could meet you on the other side." suggested Brae.

"Yes, I suppose I could. I have not tried such things," Lathaon said. "I will head for the mountains. You can meet me there."

Then he walked straight through the wall.

Brae looked at Elandir. "That takes care of that problem."

"We need to find my men. Hopefully, we will have some more on our side," Elandir said. "You are still planning on coming, aren't you?"

Brae nodded. "There's not much left for me here."

Maintaining the aggressive stance, the man revealed a Whore of Fire and defeated Renaulin's Slave of Blades. Drawing a new card, Renaulin received the Champion of Blades and placed it straight down. This was going to end quickly, he knew, if he didn't have a solid defence in play.

Taking a great stride forward, the dark elf revealed the Warrior of Blood, which defeated the Warrior of Death on his left. Blood was higher than death with Warriors and better, whereas death was higher otherwise.

There was nothing to be seen in the hooded man's expression. He silently drew a card, looked momentarily through his hand, then placed one of them down. He attacked Renaulin's Champion with a Peasant of Shadows. Smiling, the dark elf discarded the peasant and watched the man draw two more cards.

Elandir's men were beginning to return. Zach was there, talking to new faces and trying to keep everyone organised. Most of these newcomers would have never made it into Elandir's employ when circumstances were less desperate.

Elandir walked back the way they had come, eventually leaving the sanctuary.
