"The building is strong, Jaunne, and the foundations deep," Elandir said. "I suggest you gather your men and guard the way down. I would seek out the source myself." Elandir started to walk past, but a hand on his shoulder turned him back. "You will not. Lathaon and Mordain Thaendil may put their trust in mercenaries but I will not and their loyalties are in question. The way down will be guarded but the Order will seek out the source of the problem." The mercenary silently cursed. He needed to get down there. |

The doors to the throne room were opened, and an Army officer strode in, carrying his helmet under his arm and walking briskly towards James and Rebecca. He stopped in front of the thrones and bowed quickly before saying, "My Liege, Lord Aldron sends word that they have encountered a large force of undead to the east of Ataya, near Aelendak." James leaned forward, suddenly alert. "How many?" he asked. "We do not know, my liege, but several tens of thousands," said the officer. "Lord Aldron wishes to know how to proceed." Looking at Rebecca, James said, "I must go." "Why?" asked Rebecca. "This war is not over yet, I guess," said James. "I have to go south and end it. I have to be at the front of my troops." Rebecca nodded. "Very well. But be safe." Standing up, James nodded. "I will; I'll come back to say goodbye once I'm ready to leave." With that, James stepped down from the dias upon which his throne sat and walked out with the officer and Kassel. |

Renaulin's cage was simply the building these mercenaries had taken control over, and the bars were his captors themselves. Mercenaries? Under Raila, they would be no better than bandits. She had no consideration for the future beyond stealing what power she could. Renaulin was glad to be allowed some freedom, but he was still unarmed and closely watched. No doubt everyone expected him to rejoin them after Ulrin was dead, or perhaps to plot Raila's death in revenge. They would not stop him if he did, of course, after they had their rewards from her. Ulrin was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps this new territory, if it was that, was larger than it appeared to be. Raila was also absent. They were keeping him away from the scene, of course, and he realised this now. He could try to escape, possibly even succeed, but he had little chance of finding Ulrin before it was too late. Without him, Elandir would not have the support he needed. |

James dressed into his armor quickly, refusing the servant who offered to help him into it, and as he was buckling his belt about his waist, Rebecca walked in and knocked on the door as she passed. Looking over at her, James smiled and said, "I told you I would meet you before I left." "I know," said Rebecca. Sensing she was troubled, James asked, "What's wrong?" Rebecca sat down on the bed as James pulled his sword out, inspected it quickly, and sheathed it again. James then walked over, stood in front of her, and asked, "What's wrong?" "I don't want you to go," she said quietly. "I have to," said James. "You want to," said Rebecca. James nodded. "Yes, I do, but I can't stand here and watch while Drathmor's remaining servants plague Weissland," he said. "I need to do this, to show the people that I deserve the crown on my head." "You do deserve it," said Rebecca. "They know that." James sighed. "Maybe I need to show myself that I deserve it..." He took her hand and stood her up, kissing her once and then saying, "I love you." "I love you too," she said. "Be careful." "I will," said James, and he squeezed her hand once before grabbing his helmet and walking out. Kassel was down the hall, and James motioned for him to come along as he strode through the palace, heading for the stable. "Our horses are ready to ride, my liege," said Kassel. "Good, Captain," said James as they walked into the stable. Twenty Royal Guardsmen were there, as well as twenty-two horses. James walked over to his magnificent white horse and mounted it. He then put his helmet on his head and said, "Let's go." --Leaving Asulein-- --Entering Ataya-- |

Elandir was met by Medran a couple of minutes later as he tossed ideas around in his head. "Elandir, I know you have never been on good terms with the Order..." "What's your point, Medran?" the mercenary asked, impatiently. "Lathaon trusted you, and were he more devout, he might have joined. I... I saw him earlier," Medran said. "He looked barely alive, and he was after the Casket. He is down there, somewhere." "Then you must understand - if Jaunne sends the guards down there, he will only endanger their lives and his!" Elandir responded. "Call off the search and go down there yourself if you must. He will surely listen to a familiar face." "He near enough pushed me aside before... He would not listen to me." |

Elandir turned away, thinking to himself, and then he noticed Brae some distance away. The vaults churned with power. Not that of the Casket; Lathaon remembered that unique magic even after so many years had passed. This was magic he had been unaware of. He was in a room full of artefacts and books, most of which he recognised from down in the Mystic Tower. Something there had reacted to his presence in an unforeseen way, and in trying to destroy it, the flow of magic had been disturbed and distorted. The amulet tried to lash out against him, and it was all he could do to disperse its magic to the surroundings. Now, things had escalated beyond his control. |

Brae saw Elandir and moved quickly towards him. He neared the man, but his face was not eager. He seemed... hollow. |

"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

Jessa Aeris looked around at Asulien as she rode out from the city. Over the past few days she had spoken with some of the mage lords in the city and had informed them she would be heading south. She had also shared words with a couple of her fellow Watchmen. A couple of the army members would be travelling to meet with the two remaining senior members of the Watchmen, to begin selecting a senior member for the army, given General Bayel's death. And they had been told to help Lord Mordain, as the monks of Aracen were hunting him. For now, Jessa needed to leave the city and speak to people, gather news. From here there was little she could do. Jessa pulled the hood of a dark brown riding cloak up around her head before having her horse gallop away from Asulien. --Leaving Asulien-- --Heading for Ledek's Span-- |

"Ren... Come play cards with me," a voice murmured nearby. Renaulin turned and saw a new figure. The man wore a hood and scarf which revealed two mirror-like eyes and litle else. He moved to take a seat at a nearby table, his gait a silent glide. Renaulin, seeing no better course of action, followed and took a seat opposite the man. "I trust you know how to play Jack of Blades?" the man asked. "Yes," the dark elf replied. "Then deal." The cards switched hands and Renaulin shuffled as the shadowed figure watched, wordlessly. Jack of Blades was a favourite among people like these. The aim of the game was to get rid of your cards by defeating the opponent's cards. Each card had a value and the Jack of Blades was the highest, unbeatable by any other card. It normally used a deck which originated in Rathor, but the rules could be adapted for other decks. Both players each kept two cards in play at all times, face down. Each turn, the player could do one of four things. He could ask the opponent a yes or no question about the cards (though it was acceptable to lie if your opponent had fewer cards). He could try to guess one of the cards, and if correct, that card was automatically defeated and the opponent had to pick up another card. Or, he could reveal a card from his hand to defeat one of the opponent's cards. If the attacker's card was of greater value, the opponent's card was defeated and the opponent had to pick up a card. If not, the player had to pick up two cards. Revealed cards were also defeated in both cases for the purposes of gameplay: defeated cards went to the bottom of the deck. Finally, the player could opt to automatically defeat one of his own cards, but would have to pick up two cards. Renaulin dealt seven cards to his opponent and himself, placing the deck in the middle. His opponent was allowed to ask to switch hands before looking, but did not, fanning out the cards immediately. The hood and scarf gave the man an advantage of course, as Renaulin could not observe his expressions. Renaulin fanned out his own cards to see, and nodded. No Jack of Blades, but he had a few high cards. "You lose, and I take everything you own besides life and body," the man said, drumming his gloved fingers on the table. "You win, and I will kill Raila Mirndon before her plan succeeds. Agreed?" Renaulin hesitated for a moment, then nodded again... |

He looked off to the side, gazing idly at the floor as in a way that suggested he could find no reason to stare at anything else. "Shaellana is dead and... the King has exiled Mordain... The monks of Aracen are chasing him, with the intent of executing him." |

Brae shook her head. "No, not the monks." His fists tightened at his sides. "That... that monster Mordus has betrayed us all! He killed her!" He took a deep breath, releasing his fists. "Yes," he nodded, "Castoden is King. Not a great start for him... exiling one of Weissland's oldest servants." |

"Lathaon would have none of this!" Elandir said in a fierce yet quiet tone. "I would speak to the King myself, but I fear my words would fall upon deaf ears, and we cannot afford to make any enemies nor waste time on him when the war may yet rage on to the north. One thing is for certain; we must rescue Lathaon somehow. I don't know what is going on there, but if the order has sided with the monks, and the monks intend to kill Mordain... What if Castoden deems him a threat to Weissland, or to the throne?" |

"The Order will take no sides but that of justice," Medran interjected. Elandir had forgotten the councillor was still present. "The monks are doing what they believe - Mordain's existance is against Aracen's creation. But the Order has never followed the holy scriptures to the letter; Mordain's condition is unique and he has sacrificed much for the good of the people." "I will not ask you to go against Castoden," Elandir said. "But if that is your opinion then you must help us save Lathaon." |
