"Lathaon?" Medran looked at him in surprise. "But you were-" "Defeated, but not destroyed. I am alive, Medran, but I must get to the Casket immediately." "Wait, surely you don't intend to open it? The Order will not al-" "I don't have the strength or the time to argue," Lathaon said, walking past. He disappeared around a corner before Medran could say anything further, and was nowhere to be seen when the councillor peered round. |

As the day wound on, James found himself in the throne room, conversing with various officials from throughout the country about the state of things. The south was in dire straits, but Aldron's army was already on the move, and would soon be there to help. Massive food stores from the north were being sent south with Aldron, intended to help the civilians who were already beginning to return to their homes. Many of the cities that had been abandoned by the Weisslanders had been bypassed by Drathmor and his army, seeing no point in burning down empty shells, and upon returning the civilians found things almost exactly as they had found them, save for their friends and neighbors who would never return. |

[Elandir, Zach, Renaulin and a few mercenaries entering Asulien] "Here we are," Elandir said. "Renaulin, do you have any means of finding Ulrin?" "Yes. I would seek him out myself - with your leave of course?" "Meet me at the foot of the sanctuary in an hour," Elandir said. "And Renaulin, try not to draw too much attention to yourself. Many of the people here may have come from Lathor and they might not take kindly to seeing a dark elf around here." He nodded and left. --- Lathaon felt the Casket of Wrath's magical throbbing long before he stumbled into its chamber. It felt as if it ought to be noisy, perhaps even shake the foundations of the whole building, but there it was. Right where he left it, standing still and unopened. He ran his fingers down its cold surface and felt the texture of its intricate patterns. It was locked and untouched. Where was Cyrredlues? How had he been able to bind himself to Arhaina in such a way, without using the Casket? Such a spell should have been beyond Kalon's understanding. There was a voice behind him. "Archmage... I did not expect to find you here." Lathaon turned his head slowly. A cloaked healer? No, he knew that voice. He knew that face. "Ithrain..." |

--Entering from Amei-- Alisha arrived in Asulien tired and dirty, with her horse in much worse shape. It had been a magnificent looking mare, and preformed exemplarily, but now it was on the verge of collapse as she trotted it beneath the shattered gate of Asulien. Looking around, she saw people hard at work, repairing damage that had apparently been done during some very recent fighting, no longer than a week ago, and the words of the soldier in Amei came to mind. Shaking her head and ignoring the odd looks she received from people, gawking at the strange newcomer to the city, Alish rode her horse up through the city, heading for a large building in the center where she figured she could find answers. Upon nearing, however, two soldiers fell into step with her. "Excuse me, miss," asked one of the soldiers. "Yes?" asked Alisha. "Can we help you?" the other asked. "Yes, I need to speak with the King," said Alisha. "What about?" asked the first. "A matter of state," said Alisha. "I come from Ahm-Shere." "Ahm-Shere?" asked the soldier. "We have very few dealings with them, other than trade. There are no alliances between us." "Nevertheless, I must speak with the King," said Alisha. "You'll have to be cleared by the Royal Guard, but the palace is that way," said the soldier, pointing. "Thank you," said Alisha, and she rode towards the palace. "I can sense the taint on you, Archmage." "Yet it lies thicker on you, Ithrain. Where do your loyalties lie now, I wonder?" Lathaon said. "Where do your loyalties lie, when Drathmor is dead, and I am at your mercy?" "I have given up my ambition. I came here looking for my brother... just to see a friendly face one last time before I turn myself in as a traitor." "Given up on your life as well, then," the archmage reasoned. "Death is the coward's way out, Ithrain. You should take the longer road; seek redemption. It would not be so hard to forge for yourself a new identity and start afresh." "I have already come to accept my fate... milord," Ithrain said. "Weissland wants me dead. The people want to see me executed." "Of course they do," Lathaon retorted. "But what the people want is not necessarily what is best for them. You have power and with power comes the ability to make a difference. Weissland is in a sorry state, it seems." Ithrain was silent. He looked away as he changed the topic. "What brought you here?" "So here we are, Brae," Elandir said. "You will have a while to do what you must in Asulien. Don't waste any time." |

Brae nodded and walked away. He had to find Lord Mordain, or Shaellana. They could tell him everything that had unfolded. |

"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

Kassel came up to James and Rebecca in the throne room. "Captain?" asked James. "There is a woman here to see you," said Kassel. "We've checked her out and she's clean." "Who is she?" asked James. "She says she's from Ahm-Shere, and her name is Alisha," said Kassel. "She says it is of utmost importance to the survival of that country." James nodded. "Very well, send her in." Kassel nodded and motioned to one of the Royal Guardsmen to open the doors. They did so, and a tanned girl wearing dirty, weathered traveling clothes walked in. |

Brae stood with Marr, having spotted the man some time ago. "Marr, where's Mordain? Or Shaellana? I need to tell them where-" "Shaellana's dead." said Marr, cutting him off. Brae was silent as the colour visibly drained from his face. He took a step backwards. "Wha-what?" "You heard me, boy. She's gone. Mordus killed her." Brae swallowed hard. "And... Mordain?" "Exiled, by the King." Slowly, Brae slumped against the wall. He had no idea what to say. |

"I was looking for Kalon Cyrredlues," Lathaon said. "In any case, I intend to destroy the Casket. My life... I can feel it drawing near to an end. It would be for the best." "Your cousin already laid waste to the Dark Elf Camp. Cyrredlues fled with Arhaina into the mountains north of here." "If he was isolated, his sword would make him easy to track. Yet I sensed nothing unexpected in my travels." "I have already told you what I know," Ithrain said, shaking his head. He left the chamber. |

It was one of Ulrin's men who spotted Renaulin first. It was not difficult to hide and blend in when the city had not yet recovered from the damage done to it during the battle. Renaulin received a casual nudge as the man walked by, then looked back briefly to make sure the dark elf saw his face. Barkh, one of the recruiters. The guy was fairly short, with thick eyebrows and moustache, and eyes that could express words without a sound. Renaulin waited until there was some distance between them, and then followed his lead. Elandir, meanwhile, brought his men to Kasimir's inn. Part of the roof had collapsed, but it was mostly still intact. There was a sizable crowd gathered inside it seemed. Of course, the citizens would seek shelter in a place like this and the dwarf looked busy but neither surprised nor displeased, but it was a nuisance nonetheless. "It looks like we will have to look for someplace quieter, Elandir," Zach said. "We will not be discussing plans, Zach, it is too early for that," the mercenary leader replied quietly. "There is something I must take care of. Make sure the men all get their fair share of the loot. Then I want you to get them looking for allies. You already know when and where to meet me." |

"Why would... why would the King do that? He wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for Mordain and Shaellana!" exclaimed Brae. "He did it to appease the monks of Aracen, I hear. The old bastards are convinced Mordian is evil. They don't care that he has done more for Weissland than they could in several life times. They want him dead." Brae's face went pale. "Dead? But... the King just exiled him, why would-" "The King exiled him and gave the monks authority to kill him." "But how can this country move on without him? Who will take up his position, or Shaellana's position for that matter?" "You will." said Marr simply. "The last time I saw her, Shaellana told me that I was to take Mordain's position as head of law enforcement, and you would take her positions as High Seeker." Brae looked at him, bewildered. "That's so much responsibility! Too much..." He paused and looked up at Marr. "I... I need time to think this over. I'll be leaving with Elandir for a while." Marr nodded. "Tell Elandir that, with the Archmage out of power, he will have to be more careful. The King might not be as willing to accept Elandir's help as Lathaon was." |

The girl walked towards the throne, and when she reached it, she bowed deeply in front of James and Rebecca. James nodded as she came back up and said, "Hello. I am James Castoden, King of Weissland. You requested an audience with me; you said it was very important." "It is, Your Highness," said the girl. "My name is Alisha Morlan, and I come from Ahm-Shere. I may ask of you, Your Highness, if you know much of the relationship between our two nations?" James looked at Rebecca and then shook his head. "No, I don't. I have only been King for barely a week, and right now there are much more pressing issues than foreign affairs; we have just defeated an army of evil that almost destroyed us and we are trying to rebuild." "Yes, Your Highness," said Alisha. "Your Highness, Ahm-Shere and Weissland have been trading partners for centuries, with Weissland exporting food to Ahm-Shere, mostly in return for gold and silver, as you have little use for the goods we produce, and most of what we produce is in self-sufficience. There has never been a formal alliance between our two nations, but neither has their been a war. Now, I am asking you to change that." James leaned forward. "How? But more importantly: why?" "Your Highness, Ahm-Shere is ruled by corrupt men," said Alisha. "These men are taxing the people of the desert who live in outlying towns far from the cities, for their own protection, as are those in the cities. These taxes are burdensome on those who scratch a living out of the sand, and we can no longer afford to have to pay for protection that should be granted us. Your Highness, we are planning to rebel against Lord Erkenbrand and his Council, and we have the support of many, including many Senators. However, we do not have the forces necessary to take Verdonsk and deal the necessary damage, and in that, I ask for Weissland's aid." |

James looked at the girl and sadly shook his head. "I'm sorry, miss, but I can't help you," he said. "Why not?" asked Alisha. "We just fought off an incarnation of evil that ravaged our country, killed two-thirds of our soldiers, and murdered over two million civilians," said James. "I am sorry about the plight of your country, Miss Morlan, I truly am, but Weissland cannot afford to help. We have too many of our own problems." Alisha breathed heavily out her nose and turned to leave. Then, as she was halfway to the door, she turned around and said, "Your Highness, I can understand your problems with fending off the evil to the south and the evil you destroyed, but there is another kind of evil that this world must fear more than any other: the indifference of good men." |

James looked in surprise at what Alisha had just said and then replied, "It is not indifference, Miss Morlan; it is inability. Weissland cannot spare the troops that you would need to help overthrow a government. Plus, how do I know that you're telling the truth? For all I know, you could be lying and the government could be good for the people. Miss Morlan, do not come in here and try to talk to me about Good and Evil. Your government may very well be somewhat burdensome, but do not come here and tell me what Evil is; the people of Weissland must confront Evil, real Evil, every day. Spend a month here, see what these people have lived through, and maybe you may appreciate your land more." Alisha stood in the center of the throne room, dumbfounded at what had just been said to her. James stared back at her, waiting for her to say something, and after a few moments asked, "Is there anything else, Miss Morlan? The southern half of my country lies in ruins, and there are things that need to be done." Anger fuming up inside her, Alisha regained control of herself and shouted, "I am of the Castoden bloodline!" |

James could not believe what he had just heard. "What did you say?" he asked, narrowing his eyes. "Your ancestor, my ancestor, Tilarem Castoden, had a child with Tiffany Morlan," said Alisha. "Well, Tiffany Morlan got pregnant. She fled the country, however, so as not to disgrace Tilarem. Do you know where she went?" Alisha paused for emphasis. "Ahm-Shere." "How can I know if this is true?" asked James. "Check Weissland's annals," said Alisha. "I am sure you will find information about the Morlan family, and how their only daughter disappeared one night. Check diaries of Tilarem and his parents; I am sure you fill find mention of Tiffany." |

James looked at Kassel and said, "Captain, please remove Miss Morlan from the throne room. Tell the Guardsmen to take her to a waiting room and I will speak to her later." He then put his face in his hand and looked down at his lap. "You should think heavily on this," said Alisha. James's head shot up and he glared across the room at the Ahm-Sheran woman and said, "Do not presume to tell me what to do." "You're not my king," said Alisha. "I never said you were," said James. "Common respect, Miss Morlan. I would never tell you what to think or how to think it. I would never tell anyone that. Maybe you should learn that Weissland is a far different place than Ahm-Shere. Captain Kassel." "Aye, sir," said Kassel. Walking over to Alisha, who was completely silent, Kassel said, "Please, miss," as he led her from the room. |

As they rounded a corner into the shadows, Barkh slowed to a halt and turned to Renaulin. "You've stumbled over at rather an important moment, Ren." "What's going on?" Renaulin asked. "Ulrin's finally met his match, old friend," Barkh explained. "Raila has it all planned - he's going to die tonight." "What?!" Renaulin cried out, drawing a sword. "We have to stop her!" "Sorry, old friend, but I can't do that," Barkh said. More of the men emerged from the shadows, quickly encircling them. He had a dark glint in his eyes now. "Nothing personal, but I can't let you leave until the deed is done. Ulrin has already tarnished our reputation by joining with Weissland, and now he no longer offers the greater rewards either." As he felt the point of a sword on his back, Renaulin grudgingly dropped his own weapon and allowed himself to be led away. Elandir headed up toward the sanctuary. Where better to secure the resources he needed? In any case, with both Haidas and Lathaon gone, he needed to make sure the Casket would be safe. |

Lathaon felt a rush of strength. He could feel her presence, sense her location for that instant. Arhaina had killed someone and he knew it. They were still connected, it seemed. Now, there was work to do. Elandir came face to face with Jaunne outside the sanctuary, and the ground floor was full of guards. "Elandir, I was told that Lathaon Thaendil has returned..." he said. "You wouldn't happen to know anything about this, would you?" "I heard the same. What is going on here?" "There have been, shall we say... disturbances... all across the sanctuary. Magical abnormalities. Doors suddenly closing and remaining stiffly shut, statues and altars tipping over of their own accord, invisible barriers and illusions springing up all over the place." "That doesn't sound like something he would do, at least not intentionally," Elandir said, shaking his head. "How long has it been going on for?" "About ten minutes, I believe," Jaunne replied. "If it escalates, I may need to order everyone to leave." |

Brae had finished speaking to Marr. He moved through the city, idly bumping into people as he passed them. But he hardly noticed. The news Marr had given him was too much for him. Shaellana dead and Mordain exiled. It had been a handful of days since he had last seen either of them, and now it seemed he would never see either of them again. He moved with one purpose; he needed to find Elandir. |

As soon as Alisha was gone, Kassel returned and stood next to the thrones again. "What do you think, Captain?" asked James. Kassel looked at him and shrugged. "I don't know, my liege," he said. "I am only here to protect you." "You've been around Weissland much longer than I have," said James. "You've been in the army for twenty years. Tell me what you think; I would appreciate it." Kassel took a deep breath and said, "I can see both sides, my liege. Yes, Weissland has been extremely weakened by the war, but General Tey is training up new troops as we speak. As far as we know, there is not much threat left. Maybe some remnants left in the south, but nothing Lord Aldron cannot handle. How many troops do these Ahm-Sherans need? It would be the right thing to do, perhaps, but we would need to know more about the situation, my liege." He was quiet and then said, "At least, that's my opinion." |
