"We can bring him around and fight off some of the affliction, but this is something I have never seen before," said the monk. "This will require a great deal of power, power beyond my own skills." |

Galben said "Most strange indeed. Well please, do what you can." The other healers watched intently, to see what would happen. |

The two monks leaned in close to the mage and placed their hands on him. "He's very cold," said the woman, nodding to her compatriot. "This is very serious." They both closed their eyes, and although no one could see anything happening, they began to work. |

Galben watched along with the other healers. In the dark recesses of Nathaniel Drakkon's mind he had heard sounds, voices. Something was happening, he just could not tell what. |

Suddenly, the young male monk's hands flew up, away from the mage, as if they had been thrown. The woman continued to work on the mage, but asked, "What happened?" "I do not know," replied the other monk, returning to work. |

The healers were surprised by the sudden movement of the monk. They had not received a response like that. Galben hoped that meant that it was working. He was also glad that this seemed to be limited to the mage, Nathaniel. A disease would have been devastating for Asulien at this time, given the cramped conditions and so on. Nathaniel could feel something on his skin, a strange sensation. Inside his mind he tried to move closer, to see out, to find out what was going on. But the spirit fought back, Drakkon was held back, dragged down, struggling. It was like he was under water, and up above was the light, the shimmering surface of the water. And for every surge towards it, he was pulled downward again. He could not give up, ever. |

The woman monk closed her eyes and clenched her teeth in frustration and exertion. It was getting more difficult, and she felt the evil around this man fighting harder and harder. Yet she knew this was a good sign, that she was getting closer, that she was finally... The two monks were thrown backwards and landed hard on their backs. The woman quickly got up and rushed over to the mage. "The evil remains," she murmured, "but he is healing. He should come around soon; the affliction is over for now. There is nothing more we can do." |

The great eagle swooped down at the foot of the sanctuary and his rider, still recognisable but barely, slid down to the ground. He had the attention of the nearby cityfolk and guards alike without having to speak. His presence commanded it, and brought a silence with it. "Take me to the Casket," Lathaon said. His words betrayed a newfound dry, croaky voice. His body was tired and weak. |

Nathaniel's eyes opened and he gasped a breath, it felt like he had not done this in a long time, although he knew that could not be the case. He sat upright on the bed quickly, trying to bring his eyes into focus. The room around him was full of people, for a moment they held faces he recognised, but that faded almost at once. They were healers, mages, and two of the monks. He spoke, everyone could hear his voice was tinged with magic, creating a strange effect "I have to go, time runs short." |

The monks wordlessly nodded to the mages and left, their work done, and headed back to the throne room. They entered and walked towards James and Rebecca, bowing before them as they reached the King and Queen. "My Liege, we were successful," said the female monk. "The mage is alive." James nodded. "That's good." "Is that all, My Liege?" asked the monk. Looking at Rebecca, he shook his head and said, "No." "What do you ask of us?" asked the monk. "We want to know more about Aracen," said Rebecca. "More about...everything that happened." The monks looked at each other and nodded. "We will get a copy of Scripture and return." "Thank you," said James, and the monks got up and left. |

Nathaniel ignored the monks' departure. A simple thought repeated in his mind, get out now. He quickly swung his legs off the side of the bed and stood up, heading for the door. Galben walked in front of him and held up his hands "You shouldn't leave so quickly. The monks said they could not heal you fully, you should rest." Drakkon simply said "No, I must leave now." Galben pleaded "Please, I'm a healer, I don't think this is wise." Nathaniel raised his hand to push the other mage out of the way, saying with a hint of anger "Away!" But instead of just pushing Galben out of the way, a pulse of magic left Drakkon's hand as soon as he touched Galben's shoulder. Like a shockwave it sent Galben smashing through the wooden door, and crashing down to the wall in the corridor outside. Splinters flew in all directions and there was little left of the door. Nathaniel was as surprised by this as anyone, but pushed on into the corridor and away from the keep. He had to leave this place, as soon as possible, it was all he was certain of. |

"Archmage! You're alive!" one of the guards exclaimed, "But you - you look like you need a healer. Hang on-" "No," Lathaon said. "There is nothing they can do." He took a step forward. In that short space of time, the people around held their breaths. It looked as if his body might just crumble away there and then. "Please, you must take me to the Casket!" The two guards looked at each other. "If you will not show me the way, then I will find it alone," Lathaon said, his tone changing. It was as if his voice was again his own, but his self had changed. His next step brought a chill to those around him, holding them stiff in place. It was like an aura, and something he did not recall even thinking up. What must he look like, now? What must he be to them, in this near-death state, staff gone and clothes torn and ragged and stained in dirt and his own blood? He pushed open the doors and entered the sanctuary. |

Soon the monks returned, bearing a small book with golden-leafed pages. "These are the holy scriptures," said the female monk. "Aracen passed these down to our ancestors ages ago, when they defeated the forces of Kilnor and secured the world for Good...for Aracen." She walked forward and handed the book to James. "Read them closely and well, and live by the teachings he gave to us." James nodded. "Thank you." "Thank you, My Liege, for your faith," said the monk, and she turned and left. |

Marr sat in a dark room, staring into the fire. In one night, everything had changed. Shaellana was dead and Mordain had gone. Mordus had fled; a smart move on his part. The fire flickered as a wind blew through the room, despite the fact that all windows and doors in the house were closed. Marr placed a hand on his weapon, turning to find the source. "Time to pay up." said a voice from the shadows. Marr's hand fell away from his weapon. His eyes become fixed on the shade standing in the darkness. "You." The shade stepped from the shadows and moved closer. "Years ago you made a deal with me. I saved the life of little Brae, literally pulled him from the grasp of death, and now it is time to hold up your end of the bargain." "No. I won't do it. Leave-" The shade cut him off. "Marr, a deal with me isn't something you can turn away from. Your soul is mine, should you fail to honour our agreement. If you don't do as I ask, I swear I will flay you alive." Marr took a step back. "What... what do you want?" "I want you to deliver a message to Mordain Thaendil." |
|
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

Marr shook his head. "But I don't know where he's gone!" he protested. The shade rushed forward. "Well you had better find him! If you don't, you'll suffer a fate worse than death itself, and the life of Brae will be taken." "You can't do that!" The shade laughed. "Believe me, I can. I pulled him from the grasp of death and I can hand him back over." Marr shifted his gaze. "What's the message?" "I want you to tell him to travel to Amei within the next week." "Why?" The foul creature grinned. "To meet his father." "You... you found him?" "Yes, at long last. And there is one other thing I want to know." Marr arched an eyebrow. The shade leaned closer. "I want to know where Shaellana was buried." |

As the day lengthened and turned to night, James and Rebecca read the Scriptures of Aracen. They began with the Book of Creation, which told of Aracen creating the world and the lesser deities, and then Kilnor's rise as the second-most-powerful god and his rivalry with Aracen, which culminated in the creation of the orcs and dark magic. Next was the Book of Rineslin, which told of how war broke out in both the heavens and on the earth between Aracen and Kilnor, and how Men and Elves clashed with the Orcs across the fields of Weissland while Aracen and his loyal deities combated Kilnor and those who sided with him, such as the demigods of Fear, Plague, and Death. They learned how Rineslin, a powerful Human warrior, was chosen by Aracen to unite the Men and Elves under Aracen's banner and push back the marauding orcs, eventually routing them on the earth while Aracen threw down Kilnor in the heavens and then sealed the world, ensuring that divine influence was forever tampered from what it had once been and the creation of Lalinor as a heavenly refuge for those who died serving Good in the War and for all those who would die with good souls in the future. At the end of the Book of Rineslin, James closed the book and looked at Rebecca. "What?" asked his wife, smiling. "What do you think?" asked James. "Of the book?" asked Rebecca. James nodded. "It is...interesting, to say the least." "Do you believe it?" asked James. Rebecca thought for a moment. "Yes." "So do I," said James. "So do I." Edited by Hotshot, Feb 20 2009, 04:11 PM.

"I... I will have to ask Mordain." stammered Marr. "Good. When you have the information I want, scratch a circle upon the ground. Spill three drops of your blood into its centre. I will return." With that, the shade vanished, taking with him the terrible evil that had washed over the city during his presence. |

Nathaniel walked from the centre of the city steadily, ignoring most of what happened around him. There was a pounding in his head, which reminded him of the reverberating boom of the battering ram during a siege several years ago. His very skin seemed to itch, like it was enflamed or crawling with insects. That had happened once as well, a magical spell. Even when he breathed, he could hear the strange timbre to his voice, the magic was still there. When Drakkon reached the outer city ruins he found an open space and stood there. He knew he had to leave the city, but where he would go he was unsure. Then a thought struck him, much like the hammerblows of a werewolf that had almost killed him once. He wanted to be somewhere that he knew those around him, home. But Crint had been evacuated, the refugees had gone to Nairio. And there it was, Nathaniel knew his destination. Calling out the words to a teleportation spell, there was a blinding flash of white light and a cracking sound in the air, and he was gone. --Leaving Asulien-- --Entering Nairio-- |

The morning came, and James awoke, sat down to eat breakfast with Rebecca in the dining room, and then the two of them headed for the small library at the rear of the palace on the second floor. There they once again opened the Scriptures and began to read. The next part was the Book of Noldren, which told of how Aracen gave down his Laws to the holy man Noldren and how he and Rineslin ensured that the people followed the Laws to live a good life and gain entrance to Lalinor. However, it also told of how some of Kilnor's servants who survived tried to spread evil ways, and how Aracen warned Noldren and the people that their souls would not be safe from Kilnor if they did not follow Aracen, and that their souls would be devoured. Rineslin and Noldren then headed into the heart of the Defiled Kingdom, slew the leader of the dark prophets, and erected the Great Wall to forever separate Evil from Good. |
