Mordus' head turned at the sound of Mordain's voice and he faced him.
A sense of freedom had filled his veins, yet all bodily warmth seemed to have left him. He felt cold in every respect.

"I am choosing, my friend. Weissland has forsaken us and I am taking matters into my own hands. Serve or rule. Which I wonder do you chose?" He said with misted words as the street plunged into an icy chill.

Mordain took a few slow and purposeful steps towards Mordus. "You have taken the life of Shaellana. What the King is doing had nothing to do with her, nothing to do with your choice! That was cold-blooded betrayal. You are nothing but a monster. I should have seen that long ago, and killed you when I found you! The fact that you still exist is a mistake, my mistake!" A ball of fiery power began building in his palm. "But I can fix that. I will rend the flesh from your bones and tear you limb from limb!"
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"Regrettable, yes. But she would not stand idly by as I took what I needed. Betrayal means so very little to me now my friend. We have already been cast asside and I am so very weary of watching the ruling of this torn down land wither." He said, standing still.

"We are too alike to fight, you and I. How can you still cling to the shackles of servitude when they are already broken? But no, forgive me. I should not hope to find an ally in you."

"This is not servitude, this is vengance. And you will find only your oblivion in me, Mordus."

Mordain hurled the ball of chaotic fire towards Mordus. The man dodged out of the way and the magic struck the wall behind him. It blew apart a section of it, shaking the city with the force of the impact. Guards would surely arrive to investigate, and others would have been woken by the comotion. But Mordain didn't care. He would kill Mordus, and anyone that got in his way.

Mordain's staff appeared in his hands as he charged forward. He lept into the air, dropping towards Mordus with his staff held high.

James awoke with a start to find Kassal standing in the doorway, looking like a horrifying shadow standing on the threshold of the lit hallway and the dark bedroom. "What is it?" James asked instantly, shooting up into a sitting position.

"Milord, there is something going on in the city," said Kassal.

"What?" asked James, getting out of bed.

"What's going on?" asked Rebecca groggily, but she suddenly snapped up as she saw the worried look on James's face. "What's wrong?!"

"Several soldiers have reported seeing flashes and hearing explosions somewhere on the outskirts," said Kassal. "And Kelan Wealer came to me and told me to tell you there are large pulses of dark energy coming from the same area. They are sending monks to investigate stealthily, but he believes it to be the work of Lord Mordain."

James rushed over to a large locker and began to pull on his garments that went beneath his armor as he said, "Send word to all the soldiers in the city to stay away from the area. I am going there myself."

"What?" asked Rebecca and Kassal at the same time.

James started to put on his blessed mithril armor and said, "I need to do this. Keep the monks out of this as well. Create a perimeter and make sure no one gets in."

"Very well, My Liege," said Kassal.

Clipping on his belt and grabbing his helmet, James slid his sword in his sheath and said, "Alright, let's go."

As Nathaniel walked, he suddenly doubled over in agony. A twisting in his guts, he gasped for breath. He had heard something going on somewhere else in the city, but judged that he was heading away from it. Now this stopped him cold. There were some people in this street, most were refugees huddling together for the night, there was just no space left. A nearby man reached for him, steadying his arm and asked "Are you alright?"

The voice came to him like a dull rumble, as if Nathaniel was underwater. He tried to make sense of it for a moment then replied "Yes, just an old wound, it is nothing. But thank you, none the less." He straightened up, taking a deep breath before putting on his best fake smile and patted the man on the shoulder before moving on. A great deal of fortitude and four steps later, and Nathaniel saw the ground rushing up to meet him. His vision went black, but the mage was still bordering on being awake.

It was now that the spirit chose to speak to him loudly and clearly. Lilith said "This is it, the start of the end, you pathetic mage. You should have known you could not chain me forever, it was only a matter of time until I learned how to affect the physical world again, to hurt you as well."

Nathaniel whispered "... I won't let... you." The people who had gathered around him wondered what he was talking about as they tried to find someone to help him.

Lilith replied "Eventually I'll have control mage. And once I do, I'll betray everything that you are. I'm going to make your name a curse as much to Weissland as it is one to me."

Finally realising what was going on, Nathaniel spoke within his own head, instead of out loud. He responded "No, I won't let it go, won't let it go that far. If it ever gets that close I'll stop you, in the most final of ways. I live a dangerous life, all these enemies trying to kill me. One time I just have to slip, just have to react too slow. Then you lose, again, and what happens to me doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Because my life has never mattered. Never." The thing which shocked Nathaniel most was that this was not an idle threat, he truly meant it. One step too far over the line and Nathaniel Drakkon would stop them both dead in their tracks.

Then he faded into unconciousness.

James, Kassal, and a small group of soldiers that were near to the fighting rushed towards the sounds and lights emanating from the outskirts of the city. "Here," said James, stopping. "Form the men into a circle here, make sure no one gets in here, especially the monks, unless I say so."

"Aye, my Liege," said Kassal.

The soldiers branched off to form a perimeter, and James began to walk towards the fighting, holding his sword in his right hand but ready with it nonetheless.

Mordus raised his still bloodied sword with both hands and parried the staff with great effort. A strange light sparked from the weapons as they did so and he almost buckled to his knees fending off the strike.

"You lost your humanity long ago, friend." Mordus snarled. "Is it not time you started acting your part and forget your ties to it?" He snickered and glanced at Shaellana's corpse.

He ducked and rolled to the side, comming up to hurl a sickly green bolt at Mordain's feet. The paving stones flew in a hail from the violently formed crater, covered in the same green substance.

Mordain lept into the air, propelling himself with his wings, to avoid the blast. He landed next to Mordus and made another strike, before blocking Mordus's retaliation.

"I hold no illusions of humanity. They left me long ago."

He pushed Mordus back and went to strike the man's legs with a swing from his staff, though Mordus jumped and dodged.

"It is a shame it should come to this Mordain. We could do great things. Such great things..." Mordus propelled himself into the air and remained there, still for a moment. He then laughed maniacally and pointed drew his sword in an arc before the buildings bellow him.

Their wood and masonry crumbled as if ravaged by time and crashed into ruin.

Mordain gazed back at the devastation Mordus caused. "Does your maddness have no limits?" he hissed.

The Mage of Shadows dispelled his staff and slammed his palms together as he raised his arms towards Mordus. A bolt of chaotic power flew from his hands, striking Mordus and knocking him from the air. He summoned a rune-covered sword into his hand.

"You will die."

Mordus crashed onto the roof of a stone building and lay crumpled upon his chest. Pain was familiar to him yet always as jarring as before - this felt umpteen times as real as ever. This time however, he was unperturbed.

Dragging himself onto his hands and knees he could feel the crown force his broken bones into their rightful place with a sickening gut feeling. It brought grim satisfaction to him.

He could almost feel Mordain bearing down on him. Slicing through the air with wing beat after beat. He stood up and spread his arms. Inviting the next strike.

---

A foul wind stirred amidst the city as buildings came crashing down. The night air disguised the whirling dust clouds to everyone but the most vigilant observer.

They gathered. Slowly at first from every corner of the city - where they had been waiting. Silently. A strong gust blew past Castoden's men, making them shield their eyes from the cloud. It quickly passed, rushing to coverge where they knew they were heading.

Mordain slammed into Mordus and wrapped his arms around the man, taking his enemy with him as he continued to fly. The pair shot through the air in an arc, coming back towards the towers above the vault. Mordain smashed through the wall of one, with Mordus taking the impact.

The pair tumbled into the room. It was lined with tomes and crates; a simple storage room, by the looks of it. But Mordain had little time to take in his surroundings. He was back on his feet in moments, sword held ready.

Mordus lay still amongst the rubble, barely shifting. A bloody cough escaped him as he writhed over onto his back, blood covering his face and torso.

"You...hate me...*cough*...Once you w-were... a second father to me..." He spat a clump of blood onto the stone beside him.

"You showed me the meaning of honour. And then you threw it away. *cough* You submitted to...the valiant Castoden." He said with a bloodied smile.

"Well I r-r-efuse to be helpless. I will show them all Mordain! *cough* I will show them our kind will prevail. The many will not be ruled by the virtuous, only the ruthless."

---

A torrent of dust and debris stormed around the two fighters in an instant. Their view was completely obscured from the outside world and shrouded them from everything but each other.
It came to settle amidst themselfs, bringing the eye of the storm between them. In a warped second of time everything was brough to a standstill.

The violent whirling of their clothing slowed and stopped. The movement of their limbs and breathing slowed to a deathly halt, yet still they were concious. Mordus gazed wide eyed with a smiling wonder. His humanity had finaly broken. Shattered beyond repair.

Out of the vortex great tendrils reached, beyond the control of the ripping wind. Slowly, piece by piece skeletal figures formed from the chaos. Dozens, hundreds, legion were born from the swirling torrent.

James rushed towards the vault as the two men crashed through it. Suddenly, there was a bright flash of light and Kelan appeared next to him.

"My Liege," said Kelan, nodding respectfully.

"What are you doing here?" asked James, cursing himself for forgetting the monks divine teleportation abilities.

"I came to help," said Kelan.

"There is nothing you can do here," said James. "The city is of more concern."

"What do you mean?" asked Kelan.

"Make sure the city is not damaged any more," said James. "The power emanating from here is evil. Can you contain it? Can you keep it from affecting the city in any way?"

"I can," said Kelan.

"You were my greatest student, but look at you now! All for Weissland; that is what I taught you. That much you have forgotten." said Mordain as he took a few, cautious steps backwards in light of the vortex.

Skeletal forms moved in the storm, taking slow, timeless steps towards Mordus. Mordain held his sword ready and kept his magic primed. He would not attack a force this large unless he had to.

Mordus lay surrounded by skelletal warriors, all reaching for him. He looked at Mordain, feeling the last of his humanity slip by into nothingness. A gleam of regret shimmered in his eyes.

"W-w-we were brothers once. Remember that..."

His sword arm was drawn painfully into the air by unseen forces. A brilliant grey light spewed forth from the sword, reaching to every skeletal figure within the city. They convulsed violently as what had once been lost to them returned to their decayed bodies.

At once, combining to form a terrible sound, they decayed into ruin - falling to dust as they had been bound for so long. All but one.

A great king of skeletons remainded, resolute in purpose. Exruciatingly, soul rendingly, the king of old latched onto Mordus' jaw with a bony hand. The light of humanity withdrew from Mordus' flesh, drawn from every bone and muscle - swallowed into the depth of the vengefull king.
Such was the cost of the sword. The Fell Blade.

Mordus gasped momentarily but fell silent and limp to the ground.

With the vortex gone, Mordain could clearly see Mordus sprawled upon the floor. The Mage of Shadows allowed his sword to vanish as he walked over to Mordus. He waved a hand across the man, pulsing gently with magic. There were no signs of life. Not a heart beat, nor a pulse, not even a soul. The Dark Seeker was dead.

"A fate all too kind." said Mordain quietly.

He turned and walked back to the hole he and Mordus had created in the wall upon entering. He jumped from the tower and used his wings to land easily upon the ground, next to Shaellana. The King was there, as was one of the monks. Mordain didn't care, though. He crouched beside Shaellana's body and stayed perfectly still, just staring at her.

Kelan's hands began to glow, shrouded in white energy, and he said sternly, "Mordain Thaendil, by order of the King and by the authority of Aracen, God of all creation, you are condemned as an infestation of evil and sentenced to die. May any good within you be free of the evil which now enslaves it."

James felt helpless, knowing he was unable to stop Kelan without risking everything, but unable to simply stand there and watch as Mordain would be destroyed, his back turned to his enemy and the pure power of Kelan unleashed against an unprepared and worn-out foe. Without thinking, James suddenly yelled, "Kelan! Look out!" Kelan spun around, looking for the source of the supposed threat, and James struck him across the back of the head with the butt of his sword, knocking the man unconscious to the ground. The city was suddenly silent, and James turned to look at Mordain, kneeling next to Shaellana. He walked over next to Mordain and stood over the two of them, saying nothing, but looking at Shaellana's face and finally seeing peace in the face of the woman who had always seemed so tortured.

Mordain breathed deeply. "I... have nothing left." he said quietly.

A number of guards had come closer, some due to the sounds made by the King, others out of simple curiosity. But they had come closer nonetheless.
