"Tell me how you're going to get my Lord free from the monks, the monks you have allowed to kill my Lord." She took a step forward. "This is your plan, which we will do for you. And if you expect me to do any of it, then you'll explain it to me." |
|
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

She withdrew. "Then explain that beforehand." She took a moment to clear her throat. "The Royal Guard are the finest warriors in Weissland, perhaps even in the world. They wear armour stronger than any, save that fancy suit the monks gave you to face the Dark Lord. They swear loyalty to the leader of Weissland, and only to the leader of Weissland. As King, it will be simple case of you point and they do. Now what does this have to do with Mordain?" Her voice was losing strength, replaced with saddness. She was fighting back sorrow, brought on by her concern. |

"The Guard will answer only to me," said James. "Then they will aid you and Mordain at every turn. They will ensure your safe passage out of this country, and lead the monks on the wrong path whenever possible. If all goes as planned, the monks will not know for some time that you have fled, and I will not permit them to carry their search across the sea." |

"Fled the country?" she shrieked. "You want us to flee this land, our homeland, just so you can preserve relations with people who have done next to nothing for us during the war? Where were these monks when Ataya fell, when Lathaon was cast from the mortal, when the Dark Lord's forces tried to end us on Ledek's Span? Where were the monks then?" Tears were streaming for her eyes, and her right hand was resting on the handle of her sword. Her face was a mix of sorrow and fury. |

She turned away, leaning against the wall with one hand. Her breathing became slow and deep as she struggled to quench her rage. "You would cast out Mordain," she began, her voice little more than a fruious whisper, "for these bastards and bitches? You're going to take away everything he has, everything he fought for, everything!" |

Rebecca, silent for the majority of the conversation, suddenly burst out, "You think this is easy for him? You think he enjoys this?" "Rebecca, please," said James quietly. "No," said Rebecca. Turning back to Shaellana, Rebecca said, "You may think you're the only one who's been through difficult times, but you forget that we had to flee our own country once! And who's fault was that? It was yours! You were the one who brought that upon us, all for 'the good of Weissland.' So why can't you see now that this is for the good of Weissland?" |

"This is different..." replied Shaellana. All the anger was gone, consumed by sorrow. She was crying, and she couldn't hide it. |

Shaellana turned back, looking directly at Rebecca. "Because serving Weissland is all that Mordain has. When I came to the two of you, James was not happy in the Realm. James, you were not accepted there. You wanted something more. And, despite what you two think, it was not Mordain's decision, nor mine to bring you here." She gulped down tears. "But, Rebecca, serving Weissland is all that Mordain has. He has been through more than either of you will ever know to get where he is now, suffered more than most of this world can understand just so he would be strong enough to serve. So don't throw you're trivial pains at me, because they pale in comparison, I assure you. If it were not for serving Weissland, Mordain would be dead. Not by the hand of his enemies, but his own. How would you feel if all that kept James going was suddenly taken away?" |

Rebecca suddenly fell quiet, realizing that what Shaellana had said was true. "James, I love you more than anything," she said quietly. "And I love you more than anything," said James, kissing her softly on the forehead. Turning back to Shaellana, James said, "Shaellana, Mordain cannot stay in this city, and we both know that. You do not wish to leave Weissland, and I can respect that, but what if he could serve Weissland somewhere else?" |

Shaellana watched their kiss, saw the flare of love gleam in both their eyes. She had yet to stop crying. That didn't help. Neither of you know how lucky you are. "And how do you expect him to do that?" she asked, her voice now becoming little more than whimper. |

She wiped her nose. "I'll run it by him. You know, for the past century, Mordain has served his cousin. Finally, he was starting to realise that he should serve Weissland instead. Nice to see the thanks he get's." With that, she pushed past them and walked away, looking for Mordain. |

James watched her go and almost said something, but Rebecca pulled closer to him and said, "Don't." "Why?" asked James. "Just let her be," said Rebecca. "I'm a woman, James. Couldn't you see it in her eyes?" "See what?" asked James. "The pain, about Mordain," said Rebecca. "She loves him deeply." |

Shaellana moved through the crowds, but not peacefully. She shoved aside anyone in her way. No one objected; by the look on her face, no one would dare. She found Mordain back at the bench where they had sat the night before. Shaellana walked up to him slowly, but he did not turn to look at her. He sat motionless, staring directly forward. "What is it?" he asked. "Th-they want you to leave Weissland." she said softly. Mordain said nothing. Shaellana moved to sit beside him. "What will you do?" she asked after a few minutes of sitting in silence. "I don't know..." "You have allies. Powerful allies. The monks would die, if you wanted them to." Mordain turned towards her. "And I do want to see them dead. But I will not. I knew the risks when I used my demonic side to fight in the battle. This is not my world anymore. These people do not want my kind. Perhaps it is time that I just fade into the shadows of the world, and the pages of history. Perhaps that would be best." "You don't deserve that!" she screamed. "I know!" roared Mordain, a voice so loud it echoed across all of the city. Shaellan recoiled, moving from the bench. "But this is the wish of our prescious king, of Weissland! This is what I must do!" "It's not fair! They shouldn't-" Mordain tore the bench from the ground and cast it away. It fell from their high perch, smashing into a building below. "They shouldn't, but they are! This is it! This is the end! Everything I fought for, all the blood I spilled, all the enemies I slew; they have all been forgotten! This is what Weissland want's now; to be rid of me!" |

James and Rebecca sat down on the staircase leading up to where the coronation would be held. Rebecca leaned against James's shoulder and he held her tightly. So much was happening. James thought that once Drathmor was dead, everything would be simpler, but it was not at all. The coronation would start soon, and James just wanted to get it over with. |

Mordain slumped against the wall. "When my rage would consume me like this, the demon would break free. It would try to take control. It would destroy whatever it could." He removed his right glove and looked at his hand. "But not now. Isn't it ironic, Shaellana, that when I finally gain complete control of the demon, Aracen's servants choose to try and destroy me?" Shaellana walked over to him, having only just stopped crying. "Please, don't." "Time has passed, Shaellana. James must be crowned." he said. He looked down at her. "Will you join me?" She shook her head. "I can't watch you crown him. Not after what he's done. I won't." "Very well, Shaellana. I will return when it is done." said Mordain. Though he was acting calm, by his standards, his left fist was clenched tight at his side. "I'll wait for you." called Shaellana as he walked away, back towards the palace. |
