Nathaniel Drakkon

Nathaniel Drakkon moved through the crowds towards the keep. Since he was tall he could see up ahead the grandeur and spectacle of the ceremony which was soon to come. There was still a part of himself which felt great sadness and loss, the grief of too many slain, too many friends lost along the path. It was deeply troubling to Nathaniel. For so long he had walked the forsaken path, alone, held up by the belief that others that he knew were alive and well in Weissland. Now this was not the case, he was no longer alone, but the mass of people was in no way comparable to the presence of friends.

He made his way closer to where the ceremony would take place, finding a spot in the crowd where he could watch easily, standing taller than the citizens around him. It also made him visible, so he raised his hood for the time being. His wounds had been healed for the most part, and he had changed into a fresh robe, but he still felt scruffy and unkempt for such an event.

He remarked with a humourless smile that the spirit was remaining very quiet. Perhaps it was that combat would likely be very distant, he was able to devote larger amounts of his considerable will and power to containing the thrice-damned spirit. But there was still the lingering doubt of how to rid himself of it. Lord Mordain had claimed to not have the power to do it alone, and with the Archmage gone, and so many mages dead. He tried to think of something else, of happier events.

James sighed. "Milord, they believe you are leaving in two days. You do not have to leave immediately, but perhaps tonight would be best. I did this because I don't want them to get to you. If you stay, there will be a confrontation, and I can't let that happen. Get away to safety."

"You think I would run from the likes of them?" responded Mordain. "I have spent the past few weeks running, as all of Weissland has. No, I will stay here. And the best way to avoid a confrontation, my Lord, would have been not to give an order for my execution in the first place."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"Mordain, if this happens in Asulien, so soon after the coronation, it will tear Weissland apart," said James. "This needs to be done. Weissland needs to be united, and having the monks not on my side can't happen. The people would side with you against their religious beliefs because you've been here for decades, but the only people who would back me a hundred percent would be the army."

"You do not need the monks. They are just trying to keep their wretched beliefs alive. There is good reason why Lathaon and I never acknowledged religion." Then, Mordain folded his arms. "But, if you are so determined to have them on your side, then I ask you this; what did you have planned for when they fail to kill me?"

"Still, you didn't side against them, and I don't plan on them ever killing you," said James. "I assume you can elude them and get away. I know you don't doubt yourself, and I don't either."

Mordain sighed. "As I have already said, I have no intention of eluding them. If they want to kill me, then they can try here, in front of all the people of Weissland. If this fate was right for me, then it will be the people of Weissland who judge me so. Not a handful of arrogant monks, seeking to control this country once more. And you're right; we didn't stand against them. It was simple. Lathaon stated that any who sought religion, should travel north to these lands and live with the Order of Light. The rest of Weissland would be free of it. And the rest of Weissland was happy with that. You fear losing the people because you do not have the loyalty of these monks? Quite the opposite is what is true."

"So you're willing to add more death and destruction to what has just happened?" asked James. "You're willing to set fire to Asulien because of your pride? Casting these monks to the side will ignite civil war in the country, you know that."

"This is not about pride!" roared Mordain, bringing silence to the entire area. He lowered his voice when he next spoke. "You had best get your priorities straight, James, if you intend to rule. No, casting these monks aside will not incite a civil war. It didn't back then, and it won't now. They simply can't accept that their time is up. Be ready for the ceremony."

With that, Mordain turned and began walking away. Shaellana remained where she was; leaning against a wall some twenty feet away.

James looked at Shaellana, then walked over to her. "Shaellana, Mordain doesn't understand these monks. They are going to kill Mordain because of the demon inside of him. If I refuse that, they will come after me, after Rebecca, after everyone who stands beside us. No, there was no civil war then because Mordain and Lathaon did not go against them, they simply just ignored them. But this, this will be an act of war in their eyes. A battle will erupt in this city. The Order of Light and the Royal Guards will be fighting on the steps of the Palace."

Shaellana smiled. "Do you think Mordain should be killed?"

"Don't you see what's happening? These monks should be answering to you; if they are loyal to Weissland, then you are soon to be their King. They follow your orders. You do not follow their's. But at the moment, that's what you are doing." She paused, giving him a moment. "Didn't you ever wonder why religion was cast-out by Lathaon?"

"Was it cast out, or just ignored?" asked James.

"Ignored. This is the land where religion has always been focussed. The rest of Weissland have not practiced their religion for a long time, despite whatever faith they may hold. These monks are trying to force it back upon them; that is not right. Neither is what you are asking Lord Mordain to do."

"But it is necessary," said James. "Shaellana, Aracen is real, these people's faith is real. The monks aren't forcing it upon them, I won't let them, but after this war, with all the death and destruction, religion will give people security they won't be able to find anywhere else. Spirituality can go a long way."

Shaellana sighed, looking down at the ground. She wiped her eyes before looking back at James. "If you want me to tell my Lord to do this, then explain to me your plan for getting him out of it. A pile of dead monks is hardly going to further your cause."

"A two day headstart can get you a long way across Weissland," said James. "And tell me something: explain to me about the Royal Guard."

"Not until we're through with this. Two days can get us a long way across Weissland, yes, but what then? If you expect Mordain to spend the rest of his life in hiding, then you're sorely mistaken."
