Mordain nodded. "Good. Is there anything else you wish to know? If not, I will take my leave." |

"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

Again, Mordain nodded. "You have a few hours before this land is in your hands, James." He looked between the two of them. "Make them count." With that, he turned and walked from the room. He descended the keep and walked outside, scanning the area to see who was there. |

"What does that mean?" asked Rebecca after Mordain left. James shrugged. A moment later two servants came in bearing two sets of clothes. They laid the clothes out on the bed and bowed to James and Rebecca before leaving. The couple stood up and looked at their clothes. James's consisted of a green shirt and pants with red trim, black boots, and a blue cape with gold trim. Rebecca's dress was light blue with green and red trim. "Well," said James with a smile. Rebecca laughed and the two of them began getting dressed. "I actually am a bit excited," said James. "Really?" asked Rebecca. "Well, that's a good thing, right?" "I mean I guess so," said James. "I just hope I'm ready for everything that comes with being king." "You will be," said Rebecca. "And if you're not, I'll be there to help." James looked at Rebecca, smiled, and then kissed her. "Thank you," he said. "Of course, my love," replied Rebecca. There was a knock on the door. "Come in," said James, as they had finished dressing. The door opened and a female monk walked in. "My Lord and My Lady," said the monk with a respectful bow. "Hello," said James. "Kelan Wealer requests to speak with you in the sanctuary below the keep," said the woman. James nodded. "I will be there soon." The monk bowed again and moved to leave, but James said, "I recognize you." "I fought in the battle," said the woman. "No, no, you are one of the ones who healed me," said James. The monk blushed and looked down. "Yes, yes I am. I helped." "Thank you very much," he said with a nod. "What is your name?" "Laiya Stalo," said the monk. "Thank you, Laiya," said James. "Of course, My Lord," said Laiya, and she bowed and left the room. "What do you think Kelan wants?" asked Rebecca. James shrugged. "I don't know, but I want you to come with me." "Do you think he'll like that?" asked Rebecca. "I don't care," said James with a laugh, pulling Rebecca close to him and kissing her. "I love you so much," he whispered. "I love you too," replied Rebecca, and they kissed again. |

Mordain had not moved far from outside the keep. Now, he stood under a balcony on the opposite side of the square from the keep's entrance. He watched the people of Weissland move around. Many looked excited. They knew what was happening. And so they should be excited, he thought. This was as much a day for them as it was for James. |

James and Rebecca descended the stairs of the keep, emerging into the front entrance hall and then walked over to the side room and down the stairs which led to the sanctuary. There, Kelan and several other monks stood in a circle, speaking. As James and Rebecca approached, Kelan said something to the group and the monks dispersed, all save Laiya, who remained standing next to Kelan. "My Lord and My Lady," said Kelan. "Kelan," replied James. Kelan eyed Rebecca. "It would be better if she were not here." James looked at Rebecca, then back at Kelan, and shook his head. "No, she hears everything." Kelan looked at Laiya and then nodded. "Very well." He was silent for a moment and then began, "James, do you believe in Aracen?" James nodded. "Yes, I think so." "Do you know the story?" asked Kelan. "No," said James. Kelan looked at Laiya and smiled. "True faith." He then turned back to James and said, "It is a famous story in Weissland, one known and believed by the majority of the population. Thousands of years ago, Aracen created the world and many other lesser gods and goddesses. One of the demigods, Kilnor, was angry with Aracen and his power and so began to steal the souls of those who died and devouring them. Aracen then created Lalivon, a heaven where the souls of those faithful to him can rest safe from not only Kilnor, but also the dark arts of necromancy. Kilnor created the orcs and started a war with Aracen's people, culminating in a great victory at what is now the border between Weissland and the Defiled Kingdom. Weissland was founded, and the Great Wall erected. Aracen then blocked all gods from interacting directly with the world, but left small sanctuaries, such as this one, as well as allowing those with steadfast faith and who are ordained, such as us, to wield a small measure of his power." James and Rebecca stood there, taking it in, and James said, "I believe, yes." "And you, My Lady?" asked Kelan. Rebecca said, "Well, if this Aracen helped to save James, and that clearly happened, then yes, I believe as well." "You will find that most of Weissland believes, too," said Kelan, "And the Order of Light are staunch believers." "Why are you telling me this?" asked James. "Belief in Aracen was something that was not made a priority during Lathaon's rule," said Kelan. "We do not know why, but our guidance was never sought, our help never welcome until the war. While people continued to believe, their leadership do not. Weissland yearns for a leader who has the same beliefs that they do. You must make it a priority to return religion to Weissland." James looked at him and nodded. "I will do so, but there's something else, isn't there?" "What do you mean?" asked Kelan. "You didn't just call me down here to talk about religion," said James. Kelan sighed. "No, I did not. There is another matter, a rather pressing one: Mordain." "I thought as much," said James. "He is evil, James," said Kelan. "No he's not," replied James. "His heart may not be fully evil, but his form is," said Kelan. "Evil lies heavily within him, and it is only a matter of time before his heart is lost fully, and he will be unrecognizable as the Mordain you once knew. It is our duty as Monks of Aracen to seek out and destroy evil where we find it. Mordain must be destroyed." "I can't allow that," said James. "James, you just said that religion was a priority," said Kelan. "Do not refuse us now. You do not know the dangers that Mordain will bring to this land if he is allowed to roam free." James walked over to a chair and sat down, and Rebecca came over and kneeled next to him. "I've known Mordain for almost the entirety of both wars," said James quietly. "How can I turn on him now?" "What about Weissland?" asked Rebecca. "A lot of them like Mordain." "I know," said James. "They may like him, yes, but he is a threat and an abomination against Aracen that must be destroyed," said Kelan. "Yes, there will be some dissent, but no riots, no rebellions, and in the end, they will support you. Mordain must be destroyed." "I don't know, James," said Rebecca. James sighed. "Is this how it is to be king? I'm not even crowned yet." "James, Aracen wants this creature to be destroyed," said Kelan. James breathed heavily, trying to think. The pros and cons lay heavily on his mind. "Very well, kill Mordain, but do it quietly. Do not do it in Asulien. He is leaving two days after the coronation. You can ambush him far from the city." "Thank you, My Lord," said Kelan. "Aracen looks kindly on you." James nodded and stood up before walking out with Rebecca. "Since when is Mordain leaving in two days?" asked Rebecca in a whisper. "He's not," said James. "I must warn him." |

Mordain had moved from the shadowed area he had occupied, back up to the palace steps. A red carpet had been laid down upon it, from top to bottom. Beautiful flowers and elaborate banners covered the scene. Order of Light soldiers, standing in brilliant white and golden armour, were taking their place along either side of the steps. Ten Royal Guards lined the top steps, five on each side. Jaunne was there, organising what he could, as was Shaellana. Mordain ascended the steps to stand at the top. The white box containing the crown was sat on a pedastle, behind where Mordain would be standing. The preparations would soon be complete. Given the time that had passed, it would only be another hour or so before they could begin. |

James and Rebecca walked towards Mordain, who was standing at the top of the stairs. Feeling odd climbing to the top before he was king, James walked over to Shaellana and tapped her on the shoulder. |

Shaellana grabbed James by both arms, spun him round and slammed him against the nearby wall. "You might want to run that by me again, my lord!" Her voice was low and coated with venom. No one else would hear what was being said. |

Rebecca slapped Shaellana in the face. "You get your hands off him, you stupid bitch!" Just as Shaellan moved to strike Rebecca, James grabbed the half-elf's hand and held it in his grip. "Do you think I would have come to warn you if I wanted this to happen?" |

Shaellana turned back to James. "If you didn't want it to happen, then why would you approve it?" She shot a glance back at Rebecca. "And you're queen had better learn to keep her hands off me. If Mordain was slain..." She withdrew, putting her hand to her mouth and holding tears back. |

"Shaellana listen," said James quietly. "You need to get Mordain out of the city following the coronation. You will have a two-day head-start on the monks if they don't find out you have left, but you will at least have one day even if they do. I need the monks on our side, on Weissland's side. If the religion and the king are at odds, the people will be divided, don't you understand?" |

Shaellana almost laughed. "What, did they tell you that Weissland has a yearning for religion? No, it doesn't. This is the land of religion; this is where people come if they want to pray to false idols. These monks just want to use you to save their dying ways." She paused briefly before continuing. "Oh, and another thing, James. You expect my Lord to run from this? Why don't you suggest that to him and see what sort of responce you get?" |

Elandir stole one of the horses from the nearest stable. It was a hardy black warhorse, and looked well up to the journey. He turned to Brae and shrugged. "I guess I'll explain later," he said, and mounted the horse. |

"Shaellana, the monks will kill Mordain," said James. "You saw their power. As strong as Mordain is, he won't be able to take all of them at once. He will listen to you. And there is nothing false about Aracen, surely you can see that as well." |

"There's plenty false about the so-called 'gods', James. I can see that better than anyone. I'll tell Mordain what you have told me, but don't expect him to run. And don't expect your new-found friends to triumph against him so easily." She walked away, over to Mordain. "My Lord, something troubling has arisen." Mordain turned to look at her, seeing James and Rebecca in the background. "Oh?" "James has given an order, allowing the monks to kill you. He says that we should leave the city and seek safety." continued Shaellana. Mordain arched an eyebrow. "He thinks I shall hide from them?" Shaellana nodded. The Mage of Shadows nearly laughed. "I will stay. There is still much to be attended to here. And the ceremony will start soon." The High Seeker smiled. "I told him you'd say that." |
