"You will die," said Kelan, narrowing his eyes. "You do not know the power that you threaten."

James stepped forward, holding his arms out. "What are you doing you idiots?" he shouted, looking between Shaellana and Kelan. He pointed with his sword out to the demon. "There! Out there! That's the enemy! Focus on him! You all have differences, yes, I understand, but right now we deal with the task at hand! Stop this mindless threatening and fighting!"

Shaellana gave the monk one, last, venomous stare and turned to look out at the demon clashing with Zeal. She knew she could do nothing against it; her power wasn't sufficient. However, she quickly noticed somewhere that she could be of use. She hurried along the battlements towards the gates where the undead had brought their battering ram.

-----

The Dark Lord drew closer and closer to the city, no more than a hundred yards from the outer gate. It would soon be time to end this.

-----

A shadow descended over the city, one not cast by dark clouds or the power of Drathmor, but a shadow even darker still. Power filled the air and moved towards James.

A ghostly whisper spoke to him. "To end the life of the Dark Lord, you must plunge your blade through his black heart... Heed these words, Lord Castoden, or your world will pay the price..."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

James whipped around, expecting to see one of the monks whispering to him, but none of the monks were near him. "What was that?" he asked.

"What was what?" asked Kelan.

James looked around. "Nothing."

Kelan then shouted, "At the demon!" He held his hands out, sending a beam of pure white energy arcing out at the massive serpent. The beam hit it just below its head, causing it to scream in pain. The other monks joined in, hurling beams of energy at the demon and leaving searing burns across its skin. As pure evil, it could not withstand the divine energy the monks were directing at it.

The demon roared and howled as the holy magic struck it. It wasn't going down, though.

Mordain pulled himself up and looked down at the monster. "It's eyes. Target it's eyes." he said.

"The eyes!" shouted Kelan, and the monks began to direct their energy at the serpent's eyes.

The demon shrieked as the holy magic tore into its eyes. Green blood flooded from it. It reared up, recoiling and thrashing, but there was no escape from the magic of the monks. The monster fell backwards and landed, shaking the earth as its corpse hit the ground.

Zeal launched himself onto his dragon and flew it over the inner wall. He sent it to rest, and he dropped onto the battlements.

"The Dark Lord approaches." he said, speaking to Mordain. "Where is he?"

Mordain pointed back at James.

Zeal turned to the boy. "I hope you're ready, James. The world is on your shoulders."

Nathaniel moved silently along the wall, heading towards the gate. What magic was left to him, would be best used against the battering ram than anywhere else. He watched with cold eyes as the demon serpent was defeated, bright white beams of magic destroying it. As he moved closer he could see the monks had arrived. All this time, every Weissland soldier which lay dead beyond the inner wall or on the outer wall. Clearly being paragons of good was deeply entwined with arrogance and general indifference to the lives of people... except the 'important ones'.

"Were you the one who spoke to me?" asked James of Zeal.

The Dragon Lord arched his eyebrow. "I was occupied with the demon, James. I had little time to communicate with anything."

-----

Far back in the battlefield, the bone launchers had been moved forward. Suddenly, they unleashed and threw corpses towards the inner wall.

At the same time, the battering ram reached the inner gate and began its work under Urden'Hel's watchful eye.

Drathmor arrived at the outer gate. He walked forward, the undead parting to allow him through. "Bring the gate down!"

Then, the Dark Lord raised his staff and chanted powerful necromancy. Around him, the bodies of the slain Weissland defenders rose in their hundreds. They rushed towards the inner wall, scrambling to find ladders and anything else they could use to scale it.

Zeal was skeptical, but there was no doubt for such things. "If the words spoken to you sounded true, then I would say that you heed them." He glanced over the edge of the wall and saw Drathmor himself. "The Dark Lord is here... you will have to face him."

At that moment, one of the clusters of corpses smashed into the wall no more than twenty feet away from the group. The undead rose upon the will of their Master and made to attack.

Zeal rounded upon them with both sword and magic.

Mordain found that most of his strength had returned to him by now, and he had bolstered his recovery with his own healing magic. He walked towards James. "The Dark Lord waits, my Lord."

-----

Drathmor lifted his arms and summoned a display of power, before speaking in a voice that echoed across the city. "Come forth, James Castoden. Come forth and face me!"

He blasted the inner wall with a bolt of magic, taking a chunk of the battlements away.

"All of Weissland has waited for this moment, boy. It is time for you to fail."

James stood on the wall, staring out at Drathmor, and then turned to those who stood with him. "Go," he said to the monks, Mordain, Shaellana, and the others. "I feel that this is something you can't help me with."

Mordain nodded. "As you wish. But I will be watching. Don't think I'll sit idly by if you look like you're in trouble."

-----

Drathmor sent another blast of magic into the battlements. More rubble fell away, taking a number of Weissland soldiers with it.

"Where is the lord Castoden?" roared the Dark Lord. Again, he blasted the battlements, striking out against the soldiers upon them rather than the stone itself. "The body count rises as he cowers behind these walls!"

"So that's it, then?" shouted James. "The great Drathmor is blind?"

((Not sure what you're on about, but I'll guess you're refering to Drathmor's threats. You are on the wall, not standing down there facing him.))

The Dark Lord waved his hand. The undead near the ram withdrew. All undead between Drathmor and the gate withdrew, to create a path from the gate right to Drathmor himself.

"Come down, boy, and face me."

((I know, but seeing as I'm the only person on the wall, shouldn't he be able to see me standing alone up there?))

James turned around and walked out of sight, down the stairs and into the streets behind the gate. The men all reverently made a path for him, nodding and clasping him on the shoulder as he passed. As he reached Darnil, the Lieutenant held his arm out and clasped James's arm.

"For Weissland," Darnil said.

"For Weissland," James replied, and then continued to walk. "Open the gate!" he shouted, and the gate began to open.

As he walked out, James heard one of his veterans shout, "Milord! We will fight with you!"

James turned around and said, "No, you cannot."

"We have stood with you since Ortin!" shouted another. "We will stand with you today!"

"No!" shouted James. "If you come with me, then it will be over, and all will be wasted. I must face Drathmor alone."

There was general silence, and then someone shouted, "May Aracen be with you."

"Aracen be with you," echoed the soldiers, and then James, taking a deep breath, turned and walked out of the gate.

"Here I am, Drathmor," he said.

((People are fighting on the walls. The undead army hurled corpses there and animated them.))

Drathmor grinned malevolently. "Impressive. You came alone."

He cracked his staff off the ground. The undead upon the inner wall crumbled to dust, and all between the inner and outer walls withdrew, leaving James and Drathmor alone.

"Let all of Weissland watch its hero fall."

"I never really saw you as Weissland's hero," cracked James, and he stood at the ready, his sword in front of him.

Drathmor smirked. Then, without another moment's delay, he thrust his staff towards James and blasted the man with a bolt of dark of magic, throwing him back.

The Dark Lord cracked his staff into the ground, throwing a shockwave of magic towards his foe. Finally, he summoned a dark blade into his hand, its surface covered in malevolent runes.

James struggled to stand up. His whole body ached from the attack, but he managed to pull himself up and looked at Drathmor. "So that's it, then?" asked James. "Afraid to fight me man-to-man? Afraid to put away all your magic and your powers and face me by yourself?"
