Mordain invoked what strength he had left. He used his magic to lift James's sword, as if he were wielding it with an ethereal arm. Then, he cast it forward. The blade cleaved easily across the face of the serpent, cutting through three of the monster's eyes. For the first time, the serpent recoiled and howled in agony. Green blood floaded from its damaged eyes.

Mordain made another pass with the sword, striking at another two eyes. Then, he brought the sword back before it was lost. He let it land beside him, being very careful not to touch it.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Mordain nodded slowly, before slumping onto the battlement. Shaellana hurried to his side and lifted him back.

"My Lord, you've done all you can." she said. She looked back at the monster. It was still thrashing in pain, but it wouldn't be doing that forever. "Perhaps this is where it ends for us..."

James picked up his sword and sheathed it before looking at the monk and saying, "What could you possibly need to show me right now?"

The demon charged forward in a blood-fueled frenzy. It reared up against the inner wall.

But, as the demon made ready to strike, great bolts of lightning struck it. Again, it recoiled. The defenders looked to the sky. Shaellana and Mordain recognised the caster; it was Zeal, from atop his majestic blue dragon.

"Is there no end to the Dark Lord's maddness?" he called.

The demon turned and lept for the dragon, but the dragon was already heading straight for it. The two great creatures collided. Zeal lept from his dragon's back, and slid down the spine of the Beholder. As he did so, he stuck his sword into the creature and let it slide with him, carving a great wound down the monster's back.

-----

Drathmor took a step forward. "Impossible!" he said in a hushed voice. "Zeal, here? He should be dead!"

Nathaniel Drakkon
[ * * * * * * * * * ]
Nathaniel stood up stiffly. He ignored everything which was going on around him, focussing only on the immediate situation. His nose was bleeding, so he wiped it on his sleeve. Already the mage could feel the bruises forming, his skin was tender. Nathaniel picked up his sword and said coldly "Let's finish this."

The vampire replied, almost shocked "What? No spells? No grand gestures, no big speeches, no overblown heroics? I'd expect such things from a hero."

The mage said nothing. Running forward he slashed down at the vampire, twice, and again. Kor'Mor'Oka moved with startling speed but that was because he was startled by the speed and ferocity of the already injured mage. As Drakkon continued the relentless assault, he caught the vampire twice. One slicing into his arm, while a second blow was struck against the vampire's cheek, ripping it open and exposing his fangs. Kor'Mor'Oka suddenly faltered, this was unexpected. For the vampire, fighting was planned in advance, he worked out what was coming, countered it, returned with attacks of his own, he was always ahead of his opponent. Yet now he was not, he was truly on the back-foot. If his mentor could see him now, he would have been ashamed.

Nathaniel grabbed the vampire by the shoulder and thrust with the sword, burying it deep in the creature's side. Not something that would kill it, but more than enough to cause great pain. Kor'Mor'Oka roared in agony, and tried to bat the mortal away. The mage ducked though, pulling the sword out and throwing the vampire to the ground. He smashed it in the head with the flat of the blade, watching as the vampire's head rebounded off the stone floor of the tower as well. He would have delivered the killing blow then and there when the second vampire screeched "I will kill this one if you do that!"

Nathaniel turned and took a step towards Val'Mora'Kah and said "Do you believe I care?" Chanting the words to a spell, he hurled a bolt of fire at the vampire. She dropped the mage lord and ducked aside, but still it caught her wing. Shrieking she batted at the wing, extinguishing the flame before it did too much damage. Still, her wing was badly damaged. The vampire skulked away towards the end of the tower heading away from the city. Drakkon advanced on the weaker vampire, intent on destroying her as well. The vampire raised an arm to attack him, but Nathaniel hacked down with his sword, and as the blade flared red it bit deep into the undead flesh. Stepping back in preparation for another attack, Nathaniel noticed that the arm hung limply at the vampire's side now. Unable to properly defend herself, Val'Mora'Kah tried to fly away, but the mage ripped through her other wing with his sword. Writhing in pain as the vampire tried to stand; she could do nothing as the black-clad mage gripped her tightly by the throat and slammed her back against the crenulations.

The female vampire coughed "Come on then hero. Finish it."

Nathaniel laughed darkly "You just don't get it, do you? Nobody gets it." He leant close to her evil face and whispered "I'm not the hero of this piece." Standing back in a sudden movement he swept the glowing sword around, taking the vampire's head clean off her shoulders. As the body crumbled away it fell over the crenulations into whatever undead were still below.

An unearthly roar came from behind him "Nooo!"

The mage spun and looked at the vampire still lying on the ground. To think he had been afraid of that thing, of its name when he heard it in Ahm-Shere. And look at it now. He growled "Don't worry, you can join the bitch."

The vampire thundered to his feet and charged at Nathaniel, roaring in hatred. He shouted "I'll smash your skull; I'll rip you into pieces. Then I'll crush what's left you filthy crawly!"

The mage stood still, his sword at the ready and replied "I've got better things to do tonight than die." The two beings clashed, sword on talons. The ringing carried out clear around the tower. Nathaniel parried two slashes and replied with one of his own, but the vampire blocked it. Kor'Mor'Oka thrust with his talon, aiming for Drakkon's head, but instead he hit the shoulder and gouged into it.

Nathaniel was forced down slightly and screamed "Arrragh!" His sword arm fell down, but he fought through the pain and turned it into an attack. A quick thrust pierced the leg of the vampire.

Kor'Mor'Oka shuddered as the pain flared in his leg, backing away a couple of paces. He realised that this could not go on much longer. Rushing at the mage, Kor'Mor'Oka grabbed hold of him and took off into the air, flying up higher and higher. His plan was simple, fly until the man stopped breathing. Nathaniel fought to break free, but he could not, he was unable to bring his sword up to strike. The vampire said "Now you die!"

Nathaniel caught his eye, before saying "No, now you burn!" He called out the words to a spell and suddenly the vampire burst into flame. Nathaniel was quick to cast another spell, protecting himself from what was coming. Like a burning star they fell, from such a height that anyone who looked at the sky would see it. Down they went, picking up speed as the vampire disintegrated. They struck the tower once more, and one corner sheered away, falling outward onto the undead still beyond the city. The mage had protected himself, a magical sphere surrounded him. Landing on part of the tower which was undamaged, he stood up slowly and stopped the spell. Now that his duel was over, Nathaniel looked around at the destruction being wrought elsewhere on the battlefield. The Weissland forces had fallen back to the inner wall. Suddenly he was aware of banging and thumping against the heavy wooden hatch which led down into the tower. Undead, he thought. Nathaniel looked at the inner wall, then to the hatch, and finally at the body of the mage lord still lying there as if nothing had happened. With a sigh Drakkon thought I'd never hear the end of it from the other mage lords if I didn't at least try to rescue the idiot.

Moving over to the fallen elf, Nathaniel dragged him up and slung him over his shoulders. He winced slightly, feeling the weight on his wounded shoulder. Calling up as much of his reserves as he dared, Nathaniel spoke powerful words to a spell. Moments later he vanished, teleporting away, before appearing behind the inner wall. Putting the mage lord down as some soldiers and healers ran over to them, Nathaniel slumped down on the ground. He just needed some rest.

The demon spun round, striking the dragon away with its tail. It doubled-back and made to snatch Zeal between its jaws. But Zeal was fast; he lept off the creature and landed on the ground. As the Beholder descended towards him, he sent bolts of lightning from the palm of his hands straight into the monster's face.

"I have slain your ilk before, demon. I will do it again!" hissed the Dragon Lord.

The demon howled in rage and made another pass at him, but it was still too slow. Zeal's dragon slammed into it and took it to the ground, ripping its talons through the monster.

"Something that will aid you," said the monk.

James hesitated, shifting his gaze between the monk and the demon outside the city.

"My Lord, that is not your fight," said the monk. "Come with me."

James looked back at the monk and nodded, and the man immediately turned and rushed down the stairs. James stood there for a moment before rushing after him. They made their way as quickly as possible through the throng of soldiers and back towards the massive keep at the center of the city. There were two monks standing at the entrance to the keep, flanked by a number of Order of Light guards. The guards opened the doors for the monk and he and James walked inside.

Inside, the keep was magnificent, with wide, arching ceilings reaching up to the second floor. For being one of the most fortified structures in the world, its builders had not lost touch with the aesthetic.

"Do not bother looking up, My Lord," said the monk. "We go down." He walked over to the side to a small, almost-hidden door and opened it. The room beyond was completely empty, save for a small trap door in the floor. The monk lifted it up, revealing a stone staircase dimly-lit by a number of torches leading down. James hesitated at the top, but the monk motioned to him. "Come, My Lord."

James nodded and followed the monk down the stairs. After about thirty steps, they reached another door, which the monk opened. Beyond the door was a wide circular room, ringed with torches and various golden ornaments. Against the far side of the room was a massive oak war locker, which was flanked by two white-robed monks. The lead monk walked to the locker and stood in front of it.

James walked forward. "What's in there?" he asked.

The two monks flanking the locker walked forward and took hold of James.

"Hey!" exclaimed James, shaking them off him. "Cut it out."

"They are taking off your armor, My Lord," said the lead monk. "Relax."

James relaxed somewhat and allowed the monks to take off his armor, but eyed them skeptically. It took some time to get his armor off, but soon James was standing there in his blue tunic and pants. "Now what?" asked James, now annoyed.

The lead monk then stepped aside and opened the war locker, revealing a magnificent suit of silvery-white armor. James's jaw almost dropped as he saw the suit. "What is that?" asked James.

"The suit of armor worn by Ilan Tioent in the battle against Kilnor, many ages ago," said the monk. "Made of pure mithril and blessed by Aracen himself. This armor will protect you against both sword and evil curse. You will need it before this day is over."

James stared at it in awe as the two monks began to take pieces off and clip them to James's body.

The undead had swarmed the area between the outer and inner wall. They were moving their battering ram up towards the inner gate.

Urden moved with the force, taking command in the wake of Moarbrek's death.

And, back at his camp, Drathmor had begun his own advance towards the city.

-----

Mordain sat on the ground, propped against a battlement wall. "This is... bad, Shaellana. My... strength is all but gone..."

"We'll get through this, my Lord."

James emerged back out of the keep, clad in the new mithril armor and holding his sword in his right hand. He walked steadily back towards the inner gate, causing all who saw him to stare at him in wonderment. The armor was magnificently crafted, with those areas not covered in plate armor covered with mithril mail. He eventually reached his own veterans, and Darnil gave him an approving nod.

"This will help morale," said Darnil quietly.

"Hopefully it will help more than morale," said James. He walked up the steps of the inner wall, reaching the top where Mordain and Shaellana were. "Milord," said James with a nod. "Shaellana. The monks are coming to the wall. They say they can aid against the demon."

Shaellana nodded. "Good. Zeal can't keep it occupied forever."

She glanced over the wall to see the demon dive down upon Zeal's dragon. The monster dug its jaws into the dragon's side. Zeal called out in rage before blasting the demon back with more lightning.

"Blast you, demon!" he shouted.

James looked behind him as the monks made their way through the crowd and up the steps to the top of the inner wall. "My Lord, we are here to help you against the demon," said the monk.

"Of course," said James. "What is your name?"

"I am Kelan Wealer, leader of the monks of Aracen," said the monk, but he did not look at James as he spoke. Instead his eyes were fixed upon Mordain. "What is this creature?"

Mage lord Tidurion had been carried away from the area behind the inner wall to wherever the wounded were being treated. The healers had tried to bring Nathaniel as well, but he shooed them away. Standing slowly and catching his breath, Drakkon walked up onto the battlements of the inner wall. What I wouldn't give for a staff to walk with now, he thought.

He moved along the wall, keeping an eye on the enemy outside, as well as looking for someone in command. The mage lords, General Bayel, anyone really, they would be able to tell him how much of the force had managed to retreat.

"This is Lord Mordain! Not just some 'creature'." hissed Shaellana.

Mordain breathed deeply. Slowly but surely, his strength was returning.

-----

Zeal continued to jump and dodge away from the demon, giving his dragon time to recover. He needed help to bring it down, though.

"Whoever you may be, the taint of evil lies heavily upon you," said Kelan. He turned to James. "What is the meaning of this? You keep company with a demon?"

"He is one of our greatest leaders," said James.

"Nevertheless, he must not be here," said Kelan. "He cannot be here."

"You have no authority, no right to even think of commanding anyone here!" Shaellana's fist was shaking. "Lord Mordain has already dispatched a Dark Disciple, as well as the Lich Lord Moarbrek.
