Tidurion said "Well, if there is nothing else of importance to discuss then I will be going. There is much to do." He turned and walked out of the room swiftly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General Bayel sighed as he looked out over the walls of Asulien. He said to the man beside him "This is not how we pictured things, is it? We never expected something like this, but perhaps we should have?"

The man replied "There were no signs, or at least none which pointed to this. Things had been quiet down south, perhaps too quiet. And everyone was distracted with the White War. Anyway, what are you going to do about Drakkon?"

Bayel sighed again "I will not leave him to suffer this. There will be a trial, but I'm going to speak with him beforehand. Perhaps if he speaks up the charges will be dropped."

The man asked "Will he speak up? You know how seriously he takes the oath. He basically gave up his life for this, not something he takes lightly."

Bayel cleared his throat "Then I'll have to force his hand. I've got a contingency plan, we'll discuss it and pass it around later. First we need to speak with Nathaniel once they put him in a cell."

"Of course, mage Thaendil," one of them replied. "Chalanth Jaunne is in command now; he has just gone to pursue a group of murderers. There is also Councillor Medran."

___________

"In any case, Lathaon was defeated at the battle of Ataya," Arhaina said honestly. "He is frozen and ethereal, though we believe he still lives."

She continued, changing the subject before Kasimir had the chance to reply. "But that can wait. We need to get into the sanctuary before the dark elves do, and those three would be better off unseen. They need to rest here while we wait for this 'Jaunne', or until Elandir regains his strength."

She retrieved a small pouch of gold. "This should be satisfactory, and will pay off some of the debt."

Kasimir swallowed, then accepted it. "Bad news indeed, but I'll give what aid I can. Haven't forgotten the last time dark elves started causing trouble around these parts, so whatever they're up to, it can't be good. I hope you're right about Lathaon though."

__________

The sanctuary was full of guards, and bright light streamed through the impressive stained windows high up in the hall. The building had changed over the last few decades, and there was no sign of the passage down. Cyrredlues had had to kill the first two guards to open the door, but killing any in the middle of this place would mean certain death. Despite the members of the Order all around, it was quiet. One loud footstep or creaking door would echo around the hall and could alert everyone.

Mordain nodded. "Very good. Take me to whichever of them is most available. Battle is fast-approaching Asulien."

-----

"How much longer will this commander take?" snapped Brae, his patience running low.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Most of the mage lords quickly left after Tidurion. Mistrandar moved towards the army. He wanted to follow the evolvement around Nathaniel's condition closely if anything happened.

Amalrith made his way through the city back to his tent. He would open up channels of mage lord Paulin so they could keep regular contact.

Boralays moved to the city gates. The mage lord had seen many battles through his life, and had experience fighting in both sieges and against undead. He would give his advice to the people responsible for the preparations.

Solo Fryysen still sat on his stone bench, in deep contemplation of their situation. He was surprised when he finally looked up and saw mage lord Andros still stand in front of him.

"What do you think?" Solo asked.

Andros grinned, "I have seen worse."

Solo smiled and rose. "You have a warrior's spirit friend."

Andros and Solo walked side by side out of the house and through the garden outside, in silence for a long time until Andros spoke again.

"Amalrith will be busy but I think there is one person whom we should contact through magic still. And I think you should do it."

"Who is this?" Solo Fryysen asked.

"Hans Drairan in the White Realm," Andros said. "Before it is too late."

Tidurion caught up to Boralays at the gates of the city. He said "Boralays, I've been meaning to ask you. In all of the confusion at Ataya I never found out. The refugees, did Sergares' young daughter make it out of the city? A terrible thing now, she's an orphan."

Sadness showed in the face of Boralays as he answered.

"I do not know. I sent men looking for here, but they had little success. There is still a good chance she may be here though. I have not had that much time to spare looking for her."

The emotion was clear on Niaunwe's face as well, perhaps more defined because he was a parent himself. He said "She's only eight years old, I hope she can be found and kept safe. Only two years younger than my own daughter you know. And nobody knows who the father is, terrible shame really." He looked around at the walls before looking back to Boralays "Did you never think of starting a family?"

Boralays looked away, hiding his face from Tidurion. His voice was blunt as he spoke. "Not since I became a mage. I've always liked to avoid personal losses."

He looked back at the other mage lord, blinking slightly. His eyes seemed maybe slight pale. "The men I sent are still looking for her among the reguees, but it would not do any harm if you use some of your own resources."

Tidurion nodded "Of course, I'll start looking into it now. The next generation are going to be very important to Weissland now. I hate to think of how many people we've lost at Raquil and other places. And that young lady has the magical ability, she'll be strong like her mother. Anyway, I'll leave you to your duties, we need someone like you to help guide the defence. Military strategy was never my strength." The elf bowed slightly and walked away to find one of the areas where the refugees were sited.

Boralays looked after Tidurion until the elf disappeared around a corner. Then the veteran mage fell back in the crowd, into a dark street. There he sat down on a crate, let his hands cover his face and slowly let the sorrow pour through.

Mage lord Boralays was alone in the dark street, tears flowing between his fingers and down his cheeks. Mourning alone in silence.

"Medran is not involved in military matters, so I will take you to Jaunne. Follow my lead."

The guard started moving towards the inn which Chalanth's troops had surrounded and now were moving in.

Hearing the footsteps below, Arhaina quickly whispered, "Narandar and Renaulin, stay behind and keep Ithrain hidden. It sounds like he's here."

Then she followed Kasimir out of the room and downstairs to find the soldiers inside, one of them calmly questioning Felar.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Kasimir yelled. "You're scaring off my customers coming in here with weapons out!"

Shaellana stood by the wagon that housed Nathaniel Drakkon. Her eyes pierced through the wood, watching his soul trash within. The torture had taken more of a toll on his willpower than she had first thought, evidentally. But his devotion to this secret, whatever it was, was so great that physical pain would not force him to relinquish the truth. That much was clear.

Something truly felt wrong about this. Drakkon, from what she knew of him, did not seem the type to betray his country. It wasn't in his nature. But she knew that no chances could be taken. Everything had to be paramount.

-----

Mordain followed the guards, his dark robes and cape billowing behind him. He had no time to waste; now that they were at Asulien, every moment counted. They had to get the city ready for the battle, but Mordain had to co-ordinate his efforts with the Order of Light. They did not fall into his juristiction.

The guards led him towards an inn. He could see soldiers outside. Quickly, he moved towards the door.

-----

Brae went with Arhaina into the main room of the inn, hoping to meet this 'Jaunne'. Hopefully this man would listen to reason.

"We're looking for a group of murderers," was the reply. "Some of your 'customers' reported seeing them walk in, a dark elf among them."

"Who is in command here?" Arhaina said, moving past Kasimir. Khanden stayed close to her, prepared to defend her if need be.

Another elf, whose age did not reveal itself through his appearance, came forward, a long flowing cloak behind him. This was Chalanth Jaunne, acting leader of the Order of the Light. He was short-haired and unarmed except for a sheathed shortsword.

"I am," he said. "You wouldn't happen to know anything about the murders at the gate would you, lady Thaendil?"

A shadow was cast over Asulien. A shiver ran down every spine, a shudder in every heart. Dark power, as unseen as the wind itself, descended onto the city. It weaved through wood, stone and metal to find the one it was searching for; the dark elf leader.

The voice filled his mind as it spoke its words, ever tempting, ever haunting.

"Kalon Cyrredlues. Long have you walked in the dark. And now, the dark is here to offer you a proposition."

-----

Brae moved forward. "Are you suggesting that the Lady Thaendil was involved?"

-----

Mordain reached the door and opened it, stepping through into the room. He was about to ask for the leader when his eyes fell onto Brae and Arhaina.

"Great Voice, tell me about this preposition," Kalon answered.

Chalanth did not feel the darkness. "An informant told me you wanted to speak to me about entrance to the sanctuary. We found the guards dead and the gates forced open. So why not go ahead and speak?"

Brae retreated somewhat. He bowed his head, however, when he saw his Lord Mordain.

Mordain stepped forward. "Entering the sanctuary? What would you want that for?" his voice was filled with skepticism as he watched Arhaina and Brae.

-----

"A simple trade. I hold knowledge of your hated enemy, the wretched Lathaon Thaendil. This knowledge could allow you to easily put an end to him." The voice paused. "And in return, I will require only a creature from your lands."

"What creature do you speak of, and what use is it to you?" Cyrredlues asked.

"I would be interested to know that as well," Jaunne said.

"Your security was not enough, as I thought. It sounds as if there are already intruders inside," Arhaina said to him. "Suffice it to say, we did not kill your guards, and we need to get in before things get worse."

General Bayel approached the wagon where Nathaniel was. He stopped in front of Shaellana and said simply "I want to speak with him."

Mistrandar watched from distance as General Bayel approached the wagon and spoke to Shaellana.

He wondered what interest Bayel had in Nathaniel Drakkon. Could it be the general was involved, or was he just on friendly terms with the travelling mage?

Shaellana turned slowly towards him. "Why?" Her tone was simple, direct.

-----

"My interest in him is not for your ears. But the information I hold is."

-----

Mordain took a step forward. "We are soon to be fighting a battle that could well determine the fate of our land. Are you sure that this is truly important? There are other matters that need to be attended to."
