Ignoring the puzzling appearance of Ariakas, Mordain moved to stand at the front of the battlements of the inner wall. Below him, Weissland's soldiers stood to defend the city. Behind him, were more. Thousands more. They had gathered all the numbers they could to form this army, but in the face of the dark hordes of Drathmor it was nought but a drop in the ocean. Mordain raised his staff, chanting a simple spell to carry his voice across the city, to the ears of all of Weissland's people. "Children of Weissland, since the fall of Ataya we have fled from these monsters. They have taken your homes, your land; your freedom. Today is the day we take it all back. Today, we do not fear the dead. Today, the dead will learn to fear the living!" The undead hosts drew closer and closer to the walls, the battle about to be joined. "Stand strong this day, a day that will echo throughout the pages of history forever! A day where heroes are born, where names are not forgotten, and where the forces of darkness will fall. You stand together, children of Weissland, all willing to defend this great nation. Stand strong this day and we will see a tomorrow." Fleshlings threw themselves onto the wall, ahead of the invasion force. Arrows were fired, as were siege weapons. On the outer wall, swords and spears grappled with the ravenous limbs of the fleshlings. This was it. This was where the war would end. ((Now will someone PLEASE post SOMETHING! ))

General Bayel gave his men the orders they had been waiting so long for "Archers, volley fire! Swordsmen, spearmen, stand ready to repel attackers!" While his men made up only a small portion of the Weissland forces, each of them had fought at Ataya and every one of them wanted another chance to fight the undead. As Luke Bayel drew his own sword and hefted his shield, the archers fired a volley of arrows into the undead below. Dozens fell from the multiple arrows piercing them, but what damage was truly done Bayel could not tell, for the gaps were filled almost instantly by the huge numbers of undead. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mage lord Tidurion gave one final thought for his family, cast a wary eye towards the stock still form of Nathaniel Drakkon and then launched his first attack. He chanted the words to a spell, launching a large fireball down into the thrashing mass of undead, setting some alight, burning others completely to cinders. After this, he took a few moments to raise additional defences around himself, and turned his attention back to the siege. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nathaniel Drakkon drew his sword, the forsaken path, in what seemed to him like a painstakingly slow movement. The sword glowed a bright red. Nathaniel had begun to wonder why the sword was doing this, normally the presence of magic nearby only made the runes themselves glow for a while. But recently, it was the entire sword. Perhaps it was just the concentration of so much magic in one place, but he could not be sure. He tightened the grip of his other hand, even though there was nothing in it, he felt slightly incomplete without his staff, which had been lost during the rearguard battle. The first fleshling to reach the battlements in front of him lost its head, falling away out of sight. Nathaniel moved forward and swung the sword downwards, hacking into the back of the next one, sending it screaming back into the filth below. He shouted out both to the undead below and the soldiers around him on the walls "Weissland doesn't kneel to tyrants!" |

"Captain," Elandir acknowledged as Zach Amakiir entered the room. They were deep beneath the sanctuary. Behind the mercenary leader was what looked to be a huge, dark, ornate box of unknown origin and material. Elandir, even as unskilled a mage as he was, could sense a throbbing inside, like a giant heartbeat, waves of magic surging from the Casket like sound. "The siege has begun," Zach said. "Still no sign of the dark elf scum?" "No sign at all," Elandir replied. "I suppose the walls will be surrounded soon enough. He is either in the city already, has some sort of plan to get him inside the walls, or he is foolish to leave it this long." "Is it possible that he has what he came for?" "Arhaina?" Elandir's expression showed his doubt. "I think not. He will come a second time. Of that, I am certain. But never mind that, how is Narandar doing?" "He insisted that one of the generals gave him a banner to hold up, and you already know he is the wearer of Khanden's armour now. He has rejected a role of leadership already, but he will be an important link between us and the army. With any luck, they'll have put him among soldiers from Lathaon's old army. They already know and respect him." "Then I suppose he has given up on Ithrain, at least for now," Elandir said. "That is good. Narandar belongs with the soldiers, and Ithrain will probably die soon enough - if he lives even now." "Where is Brae?" Zach asked. "I don't know. Perhaps he went to see the druid, or perhaps he decided to report to Mordain." |

The first wave of the undead was weak and comprised only of fleshlings scaling the tall walls. The siege towers carrying the bulk of Drathmor's forces were still rolling slowly forward, and it would take some time for them to arrive. Currently, the fleshlings were being dispatched skillfully by the veteran Weissland soldiers on the walls as they came over one-by-one. The true test would come when the siege towers arrived, as they would drop their ramps and unload swarms of orcs and undead onto the walls at once, something that could overwhelm the defenders. But for now, the Weisslanders stood firm on the wall. |

The undead fell, time and again, but they were replaced or even animated again by a necromancer. The horde was endless. But the undead had no means of scaling the walls yet, however. They had to stand at the base before they could get their ladders up to the walls. Fleshlings broke onto the battlements. Many were struck down, but the same was true of the Weissland defenders. The speed and raw terror of the fleshlings ripped some of the soldiers apart, or made them flee for their lives. Horror was the true power of the dead. |

Brae reached Elandir and his men after he had made a quick report to one of the Seekers, to be delivered to Mordain when possible. However, since the siege had begun, Brae doubted that would be anytime soon. "Elandir, sorry to keep you waiting." said Brae, walking up to the men. ----- "Push the fleshlings back!" roared Mordain. He employed his magic to blast two of them off the outer wall, from his command point upon the inner wall. He was pleased to see the men of Weissland fighting so bravely. But it would take more than bravery to see them through this day. ----- "Are the Nathremal ready to be deployed?" asked Moarbrek. "Of course, my Lord. Shall I send them forward now?" replied one of the necromancers. "No, not just yet. We shall wait." |

Brae took a moment. He was no mage. He had no magical ability. But he was clever. He looked at the men around him, at their faces, their stance; everything there was to read about them. Then his eyes were drawn back to the crate. He began to sweat as he raised a near-trembling hand to point at the box. "Is... is that...?" |

Brae nodded. So, this was where his duty had led him. He had to defend the most dangerous artefact in all of Weissland from the forces that would use it for foul purposes. |

"Going out searching without any idea where the dark elves hide would be asking for an ambush. Think about it, we don't even know for sure that they are outside the city!" Elandir said. "We would be giving Cyrredlues an easy victory." Elandir looked to Zach, who nodded his approval. "We are mercenaries, Brae," Elandir said. "We are not Royal Guards. We will not rush into this as unprepared as we are, knowing it would mean almost certain death. What chance do you think we would have?" |

Nathaniel used his sword to block the swiping arm of one of the fleshlings. The thing howled in pain as it struck the sword, but continued to attack in a frenzy. The mage took a step back, allowing the fleshling to clamber onto the wall. Then, as its first foot touched the ground, Drakkon thrust, burying the sword in the fleshling's torso. He hefted the dead weight around and pushed it off his sword, back over the wall. He was just in time to duck and slash out at another fleshling, knocking it clear of the wall. He could see that it was easy enough to kill the fleshlings, to push them back from the wall, but that was not their purpose. They were fodder, purely designed for weight of numbers to drag down or tire out the defenders. The real targets were the necromancers, and the leaders of the Defiled Kingdom. That was the only way Weissland could win, could survive. Nathaniel looked out over the wall, seeing more fleshlings scaling it far below. He turned his vision beyond into the mass of bodies, undead and orc and worse. Finally Nathaniel managed to spot a necromancer. Quietly he said "Let's see how they deal with this." He spoke the words to a spell and reaching out his palm, sent three fireballs hurtling towards the necromancer. |

The necromancer did what he could to stem the burning assault; he was able to dispel one, but the other two found their mark upon him. He was incinerated. As a result, a number of fleshlings, as well as undead foot soldiers, crumbled away. Moarbrek saw this. His ghostly eyes scoured the wall for the attacking mage. "Release the Nathremal, to the outer wall only. Tell them to eliminate any threats to the necromancers. And move the bone launchers forward." The skies darkened as a mighty host of bats rushed towards the outer wall of Asulien. Nathremal began to form along the walls, bolstering the assault of the fleshlings. At the same time, massive siege constructs were pulled forward within the foul ranks of the Defiled Kingdom. |
