((I had nothing to do with the creation of the gods, and I am frankly opposed to their existence, so I can't help you there :P ))

Mordain shot a quick glance back at Renaulin. "He is right, Elandir, and it is certainly worth a look." The Mage of Shadows stopped and turned towards the mercenary. "I want Arhaina found. If anything should happen to her... But, I have to prepare this city for war. You will have to search for her."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

((I'd say so.))

"There is another problem to consider, if that is the course of action you would suggest," Elandir said. "If we do find her, what then? Such a rescue attempt might just get her killed."

The man named Fizban Dantares, though in his consciousness he of course remembered himself as Ariakas, stood waiting for a response from Medran or the two mage lords.

Finally Solo Fryysen spoke, "Tell us about your dreams then? Were the gods in those?"

Fizban Dantares hesistated, then he nodded. "They were."

"No more risky than leaving her in the hands of Kalon." Mordain pointed out. Then, he leaned forward. "And he will kill her."

"But it doesn't make sense," Elandir said. "Why would he waste time capturing her if only to kill her?"

"What do you know of these gods," Vedgar asked, finally getting up.

"I do not want to speak about it and risk blasphemy," Fizban Dantares counted quickly. "May I leave now?" He moved towards the doorway where Solo Fryysen and Medran stood.

"I don't claim to understand Kalon, but I've had enough brushes with him in the past to know that keeping his enemies alive is not something that is in his character. Whatever he wants with Arhaina, when he has that, he'll kill her. And I just cannot let that happen!"

"But surely this is something important?" Medran said. "If you have something to say, I would like to hear it."

---

"What if he intends to use her as a hostage?" Renaulin asked.

"If... I think you might be right, Mordain..." Elandir conceded. "Whatever he does want from her, perhaps it isn't best left to chance."

"If you undertake this, Elandir, you will have all the resources I can offer you at your disposal."

"I would instead like you to explain something to me," Fizban Dantares said as he stopped right in front of them. "I am in Asulien right. How goes the progress of the enemy and how far are them from the city? Who leads the army? Mordain Thaendil? James Castoden?"

---------------------------------------

Bana nodded when he could clearly hear the voice of Ariakas down the hallway. He felt calm when he heard his commander spoke with authority, not like a prisoner. He continued listening to the conversation, as Cloudwulfe slowly slid down the wall beside him and breathed heavily.

--Entering from Iludon--

Jessa Aeris had entered the city of Asulien and was going to find somewhere to stay. She had given the horse over some of the soldiers near the gate so that it could be used by whoever needed it more. While she was in the city Jessa did not think it would be necessary.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nathaniel Drakkon had headed away from the centre of the city towards the walls. In particular he had found a section of the walls towards the south-east. Looking out he could see the work going on. Everything was busy, and it would not stop until this war was over. Only then would there be any rest.

"Who are you, Fizban?" Medran asked. "Not meaning to be unfriendly, but it seems foolish to freely give military information to someone I know so little about."

----

"Well... we could send out scouting parties in different directions," Elandir suggested. "That way they will not be perceived as much of a threat and we will know which way the dark elves are by which party returns in fewer numbers, or does not return at all. But normally I would not put the men at such risk."

The man who had presented himself smiled sourly, "You may know me as Ariakas, Commander of Mjolnir and Loremaster of the White Council. And you will loose nothing on telling me this information."

Mordus shifted noiselessy within the walls of the complex, keeping the shadowy tendrils of his incorporeal form within the stone. The last thing he wanted was anyone becoming aware of his watching.

A dull echo resounded within the solid wall, travelling faster than through air and reaching Mordus' ear rapidly.

What? He thought he recognised that voice. But how? That man had disappeared without good cause weeks ago.

He moved rapidly down, eventually coming to a standstill within a wall. Lurking forward slowly the individuals came within view.

Mordus raised a temporarily nonexistant eyebrow in query.

Ariakas? What was he doing here?

"These are not normal circumstances, though. I shall see to it that the scouts are dispatched."

Behind the unknowing Bana, Cloudwulfe suddenly stiffened. His bodily functions slowed down as something deep within his complex, chaotic mind stirred.

Death, they all whispered.

Run, the tormented soul of Richard Magror screamed.

Flee, the sad memory of Deman Ursunun whimpered.

Fight, the still strong voice of Angel ordred.

Cloudwulf shook his head, trying to shake it all away.

Death, the voice of Temu Vechola sounded over the others. Get away or we all are destroyed.

Bana turned towards Cloudwulf and and was stunned by what he saw. Cloudwulfe was shaking and sweating, his eyes closed.

"Hey pal," he said, as he laid a hand on the others shoulder. "Cloudwulfe? What is wrong?"

"Death!" Cloudwulfe screamed as he lashed out with a hand, hitting Bana with unnatural force in the chest. Bana was kicked backwards, across the corridor and hit the wall. He landed on the floor in a heap.

"Ariakas? What are you doing here?" Medran asked, then he heard someone scream the word 'death' from somewhere nearby. He turned around.

"Who goes there?"

"I'm..." Ariakas began, but then he was interupted by the scream. He instantly recognized the voice behind that scream, and pushed past Fryysen and Medran into the corridor. There he saw Bana lying at the end, in the shadows, spread out on the floor.

He turned back to the two mage lords and Medran. "Would you answer my questions now?"

--------------------------------------------------------

Cloudwulfe fled like a madman down the corridors of the Sanctuary. He did not think straight, all he knew was that he had to get away from that horrible presence which the Memories referred to as "Death".

"The army is led by Mordain Thaendil, I believe, but I do not know the progress of the enemy," said Medran. He looked down the corridor where Ariakas had. "Do you know that man over there?"

"What about James Castoden?" Ariakas asked as he walked towards Bana. "Yes. I do know him. He's a Realmer, and one of the Warriors of Mjolnir. I have no idea what he does here though."

Fryysen stepped forward. "James Castoden is in the city yes."

"But what is his position," Ariakas asked. "And who else is in charge?"
