Cloudwulfe and Bana turned around another corridor, coming upon another long hallway with a few doors in it. One of the doors was open and one could hear a conversation through it.

Bana quickly pushed Cloudwulfe backwards, and then looked carefully around the corner. Behind him Cloudwulfe whispered, "He is there. Ariakas is in that room."

Mordus walked through a hallway not far from the courtroom. The secrecy annoyed him but he trusted he would find out, sooner or later, what was going on.

He just needed to wait for the opportune moment. He disappeared in a cloud of smoke; sulphurine vapours melding into the nearest wall.

He would wait.

Mordain spotted Castoden moving further down the corridor which he turned into.

"My lord." called Mordain.

The call was enough to bring James to a halt.

The Mage of Shadows caught-up to the young, future King. "My lord, you made a good point when leaving the courtroom. We should not be deliberating at a time like this. We should not be using our time for anything that does not further the defence of this city. That is why I will wait until after the battle to crown you. The granduer of the ceremony is immense, and we simply do not have time to preform it before the battle comes."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"If we survive the battle," said James with a shrug, but secretly he was glad for the change. Perhaps he would die in the battle, or be so badly wounded that he would not have to be king. He immediately pushed that thought from his mind. No, that would crush Rebecca, and what would it do for Weissland? "That's fine," he said to somewhat correct what he had just said; he would survive the battle if only for Rebecca's sake, and whatever came after that would come.

Mordain nodded. "Very good. I will leave you, then. There is much to be done before the battle."

He left the company of James and moved on. He left the spire when he was approached by Brae.

"My Lord!" called Brae, panting. "I was told I could find you here! You- you have to help m-me!"

"Speak slowly! What has happened?" asked Mordain, his voice more demanding than understanding.

"Korth's wounded. He w-went against Kalon, and Kalon got away with Arhaina."

"Show me."

In the court room General Bayel turned to the others and dismissed them, the group filing out to return to wherever they were stationed. The guards removed the magical shackles from Nathaniel Drakkon and left with them. Bayel slapped the much taller man on the shoulder and said "Well, at least that is over with."

Nathaniel nodded "Yes, although it wasn't the ending I'd expected."

The old general chuckled "You've said before Nathaniel, that you play your cards close to your chest, but sometimes I've got to remind you to actually play the cards. Now, I've got to return to the wall, make sure my men are in place." He turned and walked out of the court room.

Nathaniel however, lingered a moment, looking around the court room. He sighed before leaving. A guard in the corridor brought him to a room where all of his possessions had been stored since his arrest. The first thing he did was strap his belt around his waist and make sure the sword and scabbard were in position. Taking his bag of other items, Nathaniel Drakkon pulled the black hood of his robe up over his head and left, heading out into the corridors with no destination in mind.

Mordain and Brae descended the tunnels and catacombs beneath the temple until they finally arrived where Korth lay crippled on the floor, Elandir trying desperatly to keep the old druid alive.

"Kalon did this? How?" asked Mordain, moving to crouch beside the fading druid.

"H-he... h-his sword-d..." come Korth's faint reply.

The Mage of Shadows put down his staff and moved both hands towards Korth's wound. He began chanting his spell, trying to stop the power of the blade. So far, the healing magic emplyed had only served to slow down the deadly magic of Kalon's sword. To end the effects was a demanding task.

Cyrush Dantares moved quickly through the streets of Asulien, away from the Eastern Spire. He had heard enough.

The fact that Arhaina had been in Asulien already was a huge irritation to him. He felt shame that he had not managed to find it out on his own and now he only knew it thanks to luck. It was a sheer coincidence that he had decided to follow Mordain Thaendil after the court trial of Nathaniel Drakkon. But now he knew. The dark elf Kalon had gotten the girl before him. Most likely the dark elf had left Asulien and had his camp close by, but Cyrush could not go looking for him. He had other business to attend to here. It would also not be easy for Gonhin, Telen and Turak to enter a dark elf camp, so it would be a unneccessary sacrifice. The surest bet was to locate Volan, if he was still alive, and use him to get to Arhaina. Volan had served Kalon before, and Kalon would make the mistake of trusting him.

Fizban Dantares presence in Asulien was a surprise, but Cyrush would not waste any time on him. Time was running short now, and even if he found Fizban it would all be a waste if Drathmor lost, and Moarbrek vanished, before the Dark Council had made use of them. They needed their power. Flint Dantares needed their power.
He wondered on what Rektar was up to. Most likely the man would be trying to lure Fizban Dantares into his own plans.

Shaellana stood atop the lower battlements of the fortress. She stared down at the city below, watching the refugees scramble here and there, the soldiers trying to direct them whilst working on the defences at the same time. Here she stood, with the people she had come to call her own, staring into the face of oblivion.

Yet all she could think about was Mordain.

For so long, she had adapted to his new form. She had forced herself to become accustom to his heartless nature. And now, now he had shown a part of himself she had thought lost. It was there only for a moment, but it had been there! It was too much for her. Any observer would think she would be happy with such a development, but she was not. How could she be? Years, decades adapting to a new way of life, accepting what she had lost, only to have it placed before her, if only for a moment.

What if he could go back to what he had once been? Was there hope for their love to be reborn?

No! It was gone, he was gone! All that remained of the man she once loved was a hateful demon! Nothing more. She believed that. For the sake of her continued existence, she had to believe that. She could not bring herself to hope again, at least not for love.

Nathaniel Drakkon walked through the corridors until he found his way out of the building and continued walking into the streets of Asulien. He had never been to the city before, and wanted to get a rough idea of the layout now rather than stumbling around blindly during the inevitable battle. Also, due to circumstances beyond his control, he had gotten rather a poor view of the city upon his arrival.

The mage walked with his hands down at his sides, and perhaps unconsciously with fists held tight. Given his height and the black robe with the hood concealing so much of his face, it would probably be intimidating to see him if the people here were no so occupied with everything which had happened in such a short time. Not to mention the potential end of life as they knew it which the undead scum heralded. Nathaniel only had his sword now, sheathed in its scabbard. His second staff had been lost during the rearguard battle, presumably because those irritatingly aloof and mysterious monks of Aracen had teleported him away and not thought to do the same with the staff.

"Sent? By the Gods?" Medran asked.

---

Elandir moved away from Korth now, giving Mordain some room to remove the sword's magic.

Words of power were chanted, and the strain showed easily on Mordain's face beneath the shrowd. Removing the terrible effects of Kalon's sword was not easy, but Mordain was not one for giving up.

With sweat dripping from his brow and concentration writhing across his face, he invoked all the power he needed to remove the deadly magic. Then, with his spell complete, he slouched forward and breathed heavily. The effects of the spell were tiring at best.

A cloud of dust, born on the southern winds came rushing accross the plains toward Asulien. The front hit the walls and arose howlingly above it as it was forced. A guard peared over the edge and coughed in annoyance as he was was hit in the face by rising dust.

He snorted and staggered, trying to clear his lungs.

"Least I'll suffocate long before the undead get to me!" He shouted to a companion as he recovered, garnering a swift grin from his friend.

The cloud swept over the walls and panned out above the rooftops of the city, abating and eventually coming to rest. Laying a blanket of dust as it eventualy died.

A few eyes were turned as it passed but were no sooner bussied in their previous engagements.
Save the dusting off of supplies the preparations for the city continued undisturbed and untroubled by further worry than was already palpable on the people's faces.

Lucky then it was that none noticed the trickle of dust working its way uphill.

Mordain breathed heavily. "Yes, but we must move him somewhere to allow him to rest."

Taking Korth in his arms, Mordain lifted the old druid onto his back and began making his way out of the catacombs, Elandir following.

"What has happened to Arhaina?"

"Captured..." Elandir replied.

There were voices coming closer along another corridor. Soon after, Narandar and Renaulin emerged some distance behind them.

Fizban Dantares chucled at this. "Would you believe something like that? Sounds rather farfetched."

He looked around the room. "I don't think I will have need of any assistance anymore. Thank you for your healing."

"Wait," Medran said, "what did you mean by 'sent' then?"

---

"They could be anywhere by now... There is nothing I can do but prepare this place for when Cyrredlues returns."

Renaulin interrupted the conversation here. "What if the dark elves are outside of Asulien? We could send an eagle, or a dragon, to search the area from above."

Fizban Dantares shrugged, then grinned. "I believe I can't describe the events properly. I remember them now, but I believe I can't make the difference between dream, imagination and reality."
