Loter turned his face to Shaellana, giving a face that showed he expected that Shaellana explained her reasons. |

Shaellana remaind silent at first, her face passive and unreadable. It was a short while before she spoke. "At the time, Nathaniel seemed both capable and trust-worthy." |

"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

"And now both you and your lord have changed your mind?" he said. "Now where you found trust in this man, you know only see lack of trust. Why? What is this man has changed?" He gestured towards Nathaniel Drakkon. "At this court so far, no evidence has pointed out Nathaniel Drakkon as the person who was behind the magical blocking of the army. No proof you have given us Lord Mordain. Certainly, many things could point out this man as a person who is likely to be in allegiance with the enemy such as the way he managed to escape at the Great Wall. But nothing you have showed us Lord Mordain has linked Nathaniel to the magical blocking. The only thing pointing towards this man is your lack of trust." |

"There has been a handful of evidence presented that it makes Nathaniel the most likely suspect. And, Lord Arthious, we are at war with the greatest enemy this world has faced in any of our life times. We can't leave this up to trust. Someone has to prove that Nathaniel is guilty! You say there is no evidence to convict him? Well, then I would put to you that there is no evidence to prove his innocence." said Shaellana. When she ahd finished her rant, she regained her composure and sat very still. There was something odd about her stance, but no one could place it. |

"I know perfectly well of our muddy situation," Loter said with slighly growing irritation. Shaellana and Mordain were ignoring his accusations, so he needed to be more direct. "I repeat, there has been no evidence presented that Nathaniel Drakkon was behind the magical blocking. And that is not the reason he is here." He turned his face towards Aldron, Castoden and Jaunne. "Nathaniel Drakkon has already been questioned, with whatever motivation Lord Mordain or his servants could grant him, about his loyalties and actions. Even though this has gone on the whole way between Fargon and Asulien, nothing came from it. If Nathaniel had broken this court would be unnecessary. We all know this. But still there has been, I repeat, no evidence that Nathaniel was behind the magical blocking. If you yourself, Mordain, really believed Nathaniel Drakkon was behind the magical blocking either mage lord Tidurion or some of the other mage lords would have been here to back this up. But no, not even the accuser of the suspect is present. I do not doubt that this man is hiding something, but that is the only reason he is here, the fact he is hiding something from you Mordain Thaendil. The magical blocking of the army got nothing to do with this." |

"Enough!" roared Mordain. He summoned his staff to his hand and crashed the butt onto the stone floor of the chamber as he spoke, rising out of his chair. "Loter Arthious, we have heard your words, but you know nothing of what you speak if you think that this trial has nothing to do with magical blocking! I am not that petty; I have better things to be doing with my time than playing power games." He stepped forward. "Nathaniel Drakkon. You stand accused of treason against Weissland and serving the Dark Lord. Since there is no evidence to clear you of these charges, I must proclaim you guilty of both. The penalty for either is death, but in light of your services to Weissland, the judges and I will discuss alternative means of punishmet." He finished and gestured towards four Seekers. "Take him back to his cell." ((Ok Gorfang, it's your show now.)) |

"Evidence to clear him off his charges?" Loter cried out, refusing to back down. "There has been no evidence to charge him." He turned to the other judges once more. "What is your point of sitting there on your chairs, if one damned man is the one who rules with complete dominion at this court." |

Nathaniel cut everyone in the court off when he said "I have lived for Weissland, I have bled for Weissland. I would gladly die for Weissland! If the penalty is death then have the backbone to carry it out." Before anyone could react the doors to the court slammed open. General Bayel entered with several others behind him, they seemed to be a mix of soldiers and a couple of merchants. The old general said "I think this has gone quite far enough!" The group moved further into the room and Bayel addressed the judges, focussing on Lord Mordain "This trial is a farce. This cannot be considered justice. You have put Drakkon on trial because he witholds a secret from you, that is clear to see. If you truly want to know what that secret is, Lord Mordain, then I suggest you listen to us." He continued "But I will not give you what you want so easily. I will speak with the judges only. Everyone else in this court room must leave, including the guards. I also want Lord Mordain to place a spell on this room once everyone else has left to prevent anyone from hearing what is said." Bayel indicated the others "We are all unarmed, and Nathaniel is prevented from using magic. You will notice I purposefully did not bring any mages with me either. You have nothing to fear from us, especially with the likes of Shaellana and Lord Castoden in the room. Your only other option is to kill us and Nathaniel. And even if you do, others will quickly spread that news. What will you do Lord Mordain?" |

Mordain raised his free hand to his chin, gently stroking it as he thought over his options. He looked to Shaellana. After a quick survey of the newcommers, she simply nodded to her Lord. The Mage of Shadows turned back to Bayel. "As you wish, General." He gestured to his Seekers. "Everyone out. Now." The Seekers began ushering any out of the room who did not leave on their own. Mordain's eyes were fixed on Loter, waiting to see what he would do. |

Loter Arthious silenced himself and backed down. Here was a man, General Bayel, who's words were heavier than those of Loter Arthious. Loter hoped justice would prevail here. He bowed gracefully to the judges, including Mordain Thaendil and Shaellana before leaving, though when he stood up his eyes was filled with anger and fury, something he did not bother to hide towards Mordain. As he turned towards the door, he nodded respectfully to General Bayel. "This is none of my business, general. But is its indeed a farce." With that Loter turned around and joined the rest of the crowd on their way out of the room. Mistrandar Alicant, at the row furthest behind, hesistated before standing up. Then he stood there, among the people, and looked towards the judges with a frown in his head. Then he too turned and joined the retreating crowd. |

Mordain surveyed the room. The guards left, along with the Seekers, and closed the doors. Only those indicated by Bayel were left in the room. Mordain raised his staff, spoke a few words and then brought the butt back down onto the floor. Dark magic flooded through the room and then disipated. Slowly, Mordain lowered himself back into his chair. "It is done, General. Speak." |

General Bayel took a few steps forward to stand near Nathaniel. He said "It is quite true that Nathaniel holds a secret which he will not reveal to you Lord Mordain. You believe it concerns Weissland, that is also true. But it is not a threat to Weissland, it is not a danger to Weissland. In fact, if Nathaniel had revealed this secret to you, it would likely prove your mistrust in him well founded. I want you to understand that telling you all what I am about to tell you is not an easy thing, it comes with a price, a burden. You cannot let this information out of this room." Luke Bayel thought for a moment before continuing "Nathaniel took an oath, an oath of loyalty to Weissland. One which I also took, as well as the others in this room, and even more in the rest of Weissland. We followed in the footsteps of others before us. It was something we had to consider most seriously when it came to revealing. But we all considered that leaving Nathaniel to die for that secret was as much a betrayal to what we are part of, as revealing it to you might be." Bayel said "We are part of a group, an organisation, which was begun hundreds of years ago, before anyone in this court was even born. Its founding principles were simple. To ensure Weissland's continued survival by eliminating threats to our homeland, whether they are external or internal. And to act in the best interests of Weissland. The organisation is known as the Watchmen." He paused to let this sink in, and see if the judges had any questions. |

Mordain looked at Shaellana. Again, she nodded. He turned back to the men and women before him. "An organisation intent on protecting Weissland? Then do, prey tell, why this had to be kept secret from the likes of me? From the likes of the other judges present here?" |

Bayel replied "When the group was founded, it was decided by the founding members that the best way for the Watchmen to operate was to be unknown. The general population did not know of the group, and while the leadership of Weissland at the time did know, they did not pass it on. The point is that as the leadership of Weissland you have to be diplomatic to other lands and peoples the Watchmen might work against, you also by necessity are high profile. Your actions are well documented and enemies can follow you. Each of you is a target, and while you are more than capable of taking care of yourselves, you cannot go unnoticed easily." The old general continued "More than this, the Watchmen eliminate threats which are external and internal. We tackle these threats ourselves, or if we are unable to do so, we manoeuvre the right people into the right place and right time to do so. If someone with power in Weissland is corrupt or traitorous, it is our duty to eliminate them. The leadership of Weissland was not supposed to know about us in case it ever became necessary to eliminate one of them for the good of Weissland. If an enemy does not know of our existance, they cannot strike against us." "This might be difficult for you to accept but not everyone with power or authority in Weissland is acting in our homeland's best interests. Power corrupts, and if that poses a danger to Weissland's continued survival it must be removed." Bayel said. He looked at the judges and said "The Watchmen also operate beyond Weissland's borders to deal with threats out of the reach of others, or to prevent such threats from ever reaching Weissland. We also seek out potential allies and promote a good image of Weissland." Bayel began "All of this was set up a very long time ago. It began with a simple story. There was an eagle in Weissland called Gewail. The eagle and it's rider were sent off to deliver a very important message, under orders not to stop for anything. While flying the eagle spotted a boy who had fallen into a fast-flowing river. The eagle disobeyed it's riders commands to swoop down and save the boy. It unknowingly broke the rules to do what was best for Weissland, to do the right thing." Bayel looked at Lord Castoden and said "That young boy was one of your ancestors Lord Castoden. After the accident Paul Castoden was left deaf in his left ear and secluded himself for many years, living quietly in the Castoden's palace where few ever saw him. When his father Marcus died when Paul was thirty-nine of old age, there was discussion about whether Paul would accept the title, or even if they should pass Paul over in favour of a younger sibling. However, those critics were silenced when Paul accepted the title and proved to be an adept and compassionate leader. Years of seclusion left his voice weak and raspy, but those who took this and his half-deafness as weakness were surprised by his fire, drive, and commitment. He had a strong sense of right and wrong, and believed firmly in Weissland. Loyalty to Weissland was what he prized most amongst his followers and that is what led him to found the group." Bayel produced a set of documents "His seal and signature are here on these documents, which he wrote to outline the principles and objectives of the Watchmen." As he held the documents his sleeve fell down his arm and revealed the tattoo on his forearm. |

Jaunne listened wordlessly, until Bayel handed the documents to James Castoden. "How numerous are the members of this organisation, General, and who leads them? And, if it is your duty to eliminate corrupt leaders of Weissland, and if you have existed for so long, then why did it take a Civil War to do just that?" He frowned. "Surely you did not consider that to be in the interests of Weissland?" |

Shaellana continued to watch the General in silence. Every word he spoke was true, every word was from his heart. He truly believed in this cause. Everyone with him did, too. It was a commitment she saw in few. "Yes, Lord Jaunne here makes a good point. If you move to eliminate threats to Weissland, then why did my Lord and I have to go through what we did to protect Weissland? Why was a civil war needed to safeguard Weissland, if this 'Watchmem' has always been in the shadows protecting us?" asked Mordain. He understood every word that Bayel said, but still he was skeptical. He knew full-well that not all of Weissland government was pure. Far from it, in some cases no doubt. But, if the government could be corrupted, then so too could this organisation. |
