Again, Mordain sighed. He remained silent for a moment, his gaze bearing down on Drakkon. This man was strong-willed, stronger than any Mordain had come across in a long time.

"Do you have anything to say your defence, Nathaniel?"
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Nathaniel did not look at Mordain; instead he swept his head slowly across the width of the judges. He said "My defence? Only that the charges levelled against me have no substance. There is no evidence; there are no witnesses, only an accusation made by some as yet un-named accuser. This trial is not about me being in league with the Defiled Kingdom, do not fool yourselves. This trial is about a secret. A secret which I hold and will not reveal to the frankly paranoid and mistrusting Lord Mordain. He wants to control everything, to know everything, and he will clearly stop at nothing to get his own way."

Loter Arthious was surprised by the words of Nathaniel. That he dared speak in such manner. Of course there were truth in them, but to utter them could be dangerous. But now he had opened his mouth and turned accusations around. So there really was more to this than the mere crimes Nathaniel was accused for. Loter wondered what Mordain could have already tried to pull those secrets out from the mind of Nathaniel Drakkon.

He looked to his left again. The eyes of Mistrandar Alicant was still closed, but the mage was smiling. Could the man find humour in this situation?

Mordain kept his gaze on the man. "Will anyone else speak in Drakkon's defence, before I pass my verdict?" he asked, his voice bearing a dangerous edge.

Jaunne stood. "I will speak. This is not what I would call justice," he said boldly. "I ask that Mr Drakkon be questioned further regarding both his loyalty to Weissland and the secret he admits to."

((The "anyone else" is aimed towards the judges right?))

Loter shook his head. Of course it was not justice, this was Mordain Thaendil in charge and so the only justice aimed for was the justice from his viewpoint. He had used the words "my verdict", despite there being more judges than him.

"Drakkon has already been questioned, for quite some time." replied Mordain, shooting a glance at Jaunne, but for the most part keeping his eyes on Nathaniel. "He has been told that this would be the result should he withold anything."

James looked at Mordain for a moment and then back at Nathaniel. Once again, the man's eyes, still hidden, nevertheless seemed to be boring into James. The Court was silent as they awaited Mordain's response, but James suddenly broke it, saying, "Drakkon...remove your hood please."

Mordain was about to speak, but he heard James's words. He waited for Drakkon to do as instructed, and to see what James was up to.

Nathaniel listened to the back and forth of the judges. When Castoden asked him to remove his hood, he did not hesitate, and he did not smile even though he wanted to. With a delicate and precise motion, Nathaniel lifted his chained hands up in front of his face, concealing it for just a few moments more, before pulling the hood of his robes back. His emerald green eyes stared directly at Castoden, unwavering.

"Could you pull men from other duties to guard this man?" Solo asked. "I know it's a lot to ask, but I believe it's important."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Vedgar intensified his search for any weak point in the shroud in the mind of Fizban Dantares. Sweat was running from the brow of Vedgar now and he was breathing heavily. This was proving difficult and he did not make any progress.

"What do you see with your eyes closed?" Vedgar asked.

"Nothing. Just darkness."

"Are you certain?" Vedgar asked. "Look closer."

"No. There's nothing."

Vedgar frowned. There should be a light. Unless his entire memory had been destroyed for good. But could something like that happened.

"Your name is Fizban Dantares," Vedgar explained. "Do the name Kain Dantares mean anything to you?"

"No," Fizban responded.

Then something happened within half a heartbeat at most. At first Vedgar believed he had found something. A picture of a screaming face and a body of pure fire in a maelstrom of chaos and hell. Then he felt storming magical energy go through his entire body with enormous pain. Vedgar fell backwards on the floor, screaming with horror and pain. He used a few more heartbeats to get back to his senses and then he looked up at Fizban.

The man had stood up from the bed. There was a light in his eyes now, a flicker of wisdom and intelligence.

"You are Nilen Vedgar," the man spoke. He spoke with strength and authority. "A mage lord of Ataya. I know your face. Where am I?"

"Asulien," Vedgar responded without thinking, in a laps of confusion.

"Asulien," the man nodded to himself. "I understand."

James met the man's gaze and held it there, and for a moment it seemed as if the men's minds met. James looked at Nathaniel and in an instant knew that there was something wrong with what was going on. "Thank you," he said, and leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes for a moment. The entire courtroom was silent, and James said, without opening his eyes, "He hasn't done anything wrong."

Nathaniel listened as Castoden spoke. The statement was bold, but sincere. And yet the words seemed so strange to Nathaniel's ears.

Mordain looked at James, but dismissed his words. For one, Mordain did not like James faith in others. And secondly, a deep stare into one-another's eyes was little to base such a claim on.

"Nathaniel has pointed out that his accuser has yet to be named, and Lord Jaunne here has asked that evidence be provided. In the march from Ataya to this very city, our magical communication was cut-off. This was brought to my attention by a group of mage lords. It was mage lord Tidurion who accused Nathaniel, and here are the grounds he based this accusation on. Nathaniel has been away from Weissland for a very long time, and has given little reason as to why. He was captured by the enemy, and made a somewhat impressive escape, an escape no other has been able to achieve. He keeps to himself, mostly; much is not known of him. These were the grounds Tidurion based his accusation on. And, to further his claim, is another piece of interesting information. The magical blocking did not stop when Nathaniel was imprisoned, but it did stop when shackles were placed upon him to negate his own magical ability." Mordain's stare bore down on Nathaniel Drakkon. "Now, Nathaniel Drakkon, now tell me that these charges have no substance! Because I would have to disagree, and find that they are quite fitting! Especially with this secret you seem so determined to guard!"

((I know there's a lot of writing here, but there are several points to discuss.))

Nathaniel sighed a practised sigh, one which almost seemed to convey regret "Many of these things are true..." Some people in the court room let out a slight gasp before Nathaniel finished "... from a certain point of view. And without all of the information."

He continued "It is true I have been away from Weissland for a very long time, seven years in fact. What Lord Mordain withholds from this court is that I had a reason for leaving, one which I thought was important. It is also a reason which I shared with him in Port Village. I wonder if he remembers that reason. More than this I had requested a leave of absence from my duties as a mage of Weissland exactly two months before I left Weissland's fair shores. That request was granted by mage lord Boralays for an indeterminate time until I was ready to return."

Nathaniel stopped to pace himself then said "There were other reasons for my leaving as well, which were not important at the time I spoke with Lord Mordain in the White Realm. As long as I have lived I have held a fascination with exploring, with learning of new places and peoples. I have long thought that one of the most important things my father ever passed onto me, was his wanderlust, his urge to seek out the unknown, his curiosity. For those who do not know much of my family's history, they should know that my father, Rowan Drakkon, left Weissland for several years to go adventuring around the world. He returned and raised a family. The stories he used to tell me of far off lands which we do not mark on our maps inspired me. I wanted to follow in his footsteps, while forging my own path."

Nathaniel cleared his throat "Perhaps that is reason enough to you, perhaps not. But it was reason enough for me. Moving on, I was captured by the enemy, but they underestimated me it seems. They left me poorly guarded at the rear of their lines while they were intent on destroying the Great Wall. I escaped, and concealed my escape with a powerful mist. Still, I suffered many injuries for that escape. As to nobody else being able to acheive such a thing, do tell us Lord Mordain, who else has been captured by the Defiled Kingdom? How can you make a comparison when there seems to be nothing to compare it to?"

Nathaniel looked around the faces of the judges before going on "I keep to myself. That is true to a point. I do not go out of my way to engage people in conversation, and the company I would rather keep is sadly absent. Most of the mages or soldiers I know, or knew, are not here. They have been lost, in this war or in some other way while I was gone. If they are alive they are in other parts of Weissland and I do not know where. And I do not seek the favour of the mage lords. I am not one of them, and I will not hang on their every word or bow and scrape in the hopes of becoming one of them by virtue of bootlicking."

Nathaniel looked at Mordain and said "Your final point Lord Mordain, is the only one of any merit, if it is true. But perhaps you could explain to the court, especially those who do not have great knowledge of magic, how this magical blocking works? How powerful would a magic user have to be to block yourself, and all of the mage lords and other mages in the column? How far from the column could this be maintained?"

For a moment, Mordain was silent. Drakkon, as much as he hated to admit it, had made some good points. But, nonetheless, he cleared his throat and made to speak again.

"Your reason for leaving I do not recall, no. You see Nathaniel, some of us have had to deal with larger matters than ourselves over the course of this war. Some of us have had to organise the movement of dangerous items from Ataya to Asulien. Some of us have had to direct the column, and arange for it to be formed in the first place." He leaned forward. "And some of us have lost their one and only blood relative."

Again, he paused. All eyes were on him, and he was certain that many were filled with doubt by now. But he didn't care. He knew his duty, and he would see to it.

"You ask me how many others have been captured by the Defiled Kingdom? Why, no one, as far as I'm aware. But this raises an interesting question within itself; why would they take you prisoner, if no other? What makes you so special to the Dark Lord that he would spare your life when you were thrown before him? And, you claim you were left poorly guarded when captured. You expect me to believe that you were left poorly guarded by a force spanning over a million in size? Or that you managed to 'sneak' through it under cover of mere mist?" Mordain's hand clenched upon the wooden arm of his chair, the wood splintering beneath his grasp. "As for your last point, Nathaniel, about the power level required to do such a thing? You are right; a mage of incredible skill would be required to do what you have been accused of doing. But, at the same time, we do not know all the tricks the Dark Lord has at his disposal. And, a mage capable of blocking one such as I would also be capable of masking the true extent of his power. And even if he wasn't, the Dark Lord would be."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Nathaniel said "It is strange Lord Mordain, that you do not remember the reason. It seemed most important to you at the time. It was clearly something you took seriously. Seriously enough to cast a protection spell upon an item of clothing. And I'm sure command is a great burden upon you my lord, but it is not one you bear alone. Surely the lords Castoden and Aldron, sitting beside you have taken part in the many duties of commanding the army. What of the generals and the mage lords? Do they not work hard to make sure these tasks are completed properly?"

The mage paused before saying "I am sure nobody feels the loss of the Archmage more keenly than you Lord Mordain. But you are not the only person to lose family. How many refugees are huddled within this very city who have lost their families? It is a tragedy but it is part of life. Life is pain, deal with it."

Nathaniel could care less about Mordain's anger, he had nothing left to lose. He said "What makes me so special? I'm not special, I'm not unique. I have no need to delude myself into thinking I am. As I told Lord Arthious when I met him in the Pass of Kuren, the Dark Lord wanted to turn me to his service. To what end I do not know. I cannot even begin to comprehend how the undead truly think. Regardless he had a similar attitude to the one you're displaying when I said no."

"As for being poorly guarded, I was not speaking of the enemy army. I was in a tent, with only a handful of guards nearby. I might be just a lowly mage compared to the likes of you, but I can handle a few guards. Once I had raised the mist all that was required was to skirt the enemy force for most of the distance before blasting my way through the already depleted enemy forces at the breach in the wall. It was mostly luck the the defence led by Lord Arthious that allowed me to escape, barely. As for it being 'mere mist', I am skilled in the creation of illusions and you cannot strike at that which you cannot see." Nathaniel replied.

Nathaniel finished by saying "Regarding the power to block the column. If it would take a mage of incredible skill, one which could mask their true power, then why would this not have been used sooner? If, and note that I use the word If, I had this power, why did I not use it when I rejoined the Weissland forces in Port Village? When did the blocking actually start? I'm wearing these shackles now Lord Mordain. Any power I have cannot be used, so it would be impossible for me to mask my power. Have the mage lords examine me, they can discern what power I have."
