"Elandir, hurry!" Narandar said, choking and sitting down against the wall. "Listen," Renaulin said. "You need to use a smokescreen of your own. Cut out the fire's air supply. We'll hold our breath." Elandir looked back at the dark elf, smiling at his idea. An easy spell, and one he knew well. He started chanting the words, conjuring up more smoke and directing it into the fire, enveloping it in a grey cloud. |

Brae watched was happening and pushed his arm harder against his mouth, trying to keep the smoke out. He held his breath as best he could. |

General Bayel sat at the small desk in the cramped anti-chamber just off from the main rooms being used as the billets for his soldiers, as well as other soldiers not under his command. There was a knock at the door and he called out "Come in." His current adjutant, Sergeant Callin, pushed his head around the door and said "The trial will be starting sometime soon General. Another messenger will return to let us know it has started." Bayel combed his grey hair back with his hand and said "Thank you Sergeant." The soldier waited a moment, hesitating, before saying "Sir, I don't understand why you want to go?" Bayel sighed "Sergeant, it is not for you to understand why. Things have to be done a certain way, the right way. I'm not going to let formalities and protocols get in the way of doing the right thing. Do you understand that at least?" Sergeant Callin nodded "Yes sir! Sorry sir, I just thought it might be a bad idea to stick up for this mage." Luke Bayel was an old man, seventy-three years of age, but he was hale and hearty, still quite fit despite his age. And there was a fire in him. The general replied "It might be a bad idea if he was in any way guilty. But he is not, of that I have no doubts." The sergeant asked "How do you know sir?" Bayel smiled "Just trust me on this sergeant. Now, I'll be meeting with several people in the briefing room. When the messenger arrives, send them to me there. Remember sergeant, doing what is best for Weissland is better than just doing what is expected of you." The sergeant left the room after saluting. General Bayel stood up and looked around the room. He picked up some documents and put them in their container. His belt with the scabbard attached, and the sword it held, hung over the back of his chair. He left them there and walked out of the room to meet the others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The waiting was starting to get to Nathaniel. He wanted this to be over, no matter what happened. But the waiting was the trouble. Voices seemed to echo and drift in the dungeon, and Nathaniel was not sure where they were from. Other cells? The guards? Or... in my head? He puzzled. Unbidden faces swam before his eyes, memories dredged up by stress or by some other hand. They were all familiar, and he shook his head to get them to go away. Still they remained. Friends and foes, nameless or known. Regardless, there were always too many to count. |

The man whose name was Rektar walked through the prison halls. He was smiling, thinking of the irony that he and Cyrush had suddenly been met with. As he turned another corner he reached his destination. There were two cells here and two thick oaken doors barring the way to them. There stood six ordinary prison guards here, immediately putting their shoulders back and lifting their chin as they heard someone approached him. The three other men did not give much of a reaction though. Two black armored Legion members and a Seeker. The Seeker looked at him with calm eyes as he considered how he would deal with this intruder. The man whose name was Rektar smiled at this, knowing that because of the importance of Rektar's alias the Seeker would not try anything. "Do not worry," the whose name was Rektar said to the Seeker with a smile. "I am only here to check on security. I will not demand entrance to any of the cells. The Seeker nodded, satisfied. The man was a fool, Rektar thought. He stepped towards one of the doors. "Is this the cell of Nathaniel Drakkon?" he asked. The Seeker nodded. The man whose name was Rektar smirked as he thought of the trial of the mage. It would certainly prove interesting, this little game of Mordain. He walked towards the other prison door. Nathaniel Drakkon, despite Rektar's personal interest in the man, was of little importance now. What mattered was this other prisoner. The elf. Once more Rektar thought of the irony. Who would believe that the day he met with Damien and heard Tarain Pathfinder was kept in a ordinary prison cell in Asulien after having been moved there from Ataya the Dark Council would no longer have need of the man. The one reason for always trying to get to Tarain had been to pull out his knowledge of Fizban Dantares. And now Dantares was here, in Asulien. As they found the last piece of the puzzle they longer needed it. When Damien had heard the news, which spread quickly through Asulien, he had laughed like a mad man. Rektar shook his head. It may be that Cyrush for some reason had little interest in finding Fizban Dantares but Rektar did not. Oh no, Rektar could not stop smiling as he casually let his fingers run across the woodwork of the prison door. Then he stepped back, and turned his back on the prison cell containing the person, Tarain Pathfinder, that he no longer needed. "It's good," he said with a nod to the Seeker, then he walked away and out of the hallways. |

Mordus stepped out of the room he had requsition for himself; wearing the scabbardless sword at his side. He felt slightly comforted to have a weapon again, although a perpetual unease had decended on him. Even though it had clawed at his sanity in the past he could not deny it would be some help in the battle to come. Most mages forego weapons he knew, wishing to rely on nothing but skill of hands and mind. He knew the mage lords didn't approve of his way of fighting. That was partly why he had put the cursed piece of steel back in the first place. In the midst of the Bone Fields. That and wanting to turn over a new leaf. But it seemed he was predestined to something other than what he wished. He would just go along with whatever came next he decided. It didn't realy matter any longer anyway. Even if the Lich could be stopped, what then? What kind of country would be left to go back to? And to salvage what remained, if they got that far, how could he? The Mage Lords would never grant him enough power to be of use. He didn't fight gracefuly and to inspire the hearts of men was beyond him. That was why they refused him further commision. Arrogant old piles of bone. He could still remember their sniggers and looks of reviled amusement. He sighed. Staring at his feet. He rousing only as a Seeker passed him - respectfuly ignoring his peculiar behaviour. They always did. "Take me to the High Court chambers." He said before the Seeker had passed out of sight. It noded curtly as he set about following. |

The fire flickered out soon enough, with nothing to sustain it, and the smoke cleared. "So we live," Elandir said. "Now what are we to do?" Narandar said quickly, "We need to rescue the others." Renaulin shook his head in response. "Cyrredlues does not waste time prolonging the deaths of his prisoners. Since he did not kill them immediately, there must be something he wants from both of them, which means they are both relatively safe for the time being. However, we have no way of finding him so our best bet is to secure the Casket and be prepared for his return." "Time is neither on his side nor ours," Elandir said. It disturbed him that Renaulin knew about the Casket of Wrath, but that had already been revealed to him. "Why would he leave, unless Ithrain and Arhaina are really important to his plans?" "He lost a mage," Renaulin pointed out. "I suppose the druid must be dead by now," Narandar said. ---- Medran quietly led Vedgar down to the room in which Fizban was kept. ---- The court was empty of people. There were seats arranged in a halved semicircle with a long carpet in between which led down to a raised platform in the centre. There were balconies on either side containing more seats. Although it was fairly small, it seemed unlikely that all of the seats would be taken. There was a seat at the rear end of the raised platform, like a throne, where the judge would sit, and the accused and the witnesses, if any, would be called up to the platform. It was a simple layout, with nothing but the people inside to direct others to their seats, but it was tidy and well-kept, with good quality furniture. "That seat is yours," Jaunne said, pointing to the one on the raised platform. "You are taking charge of Nathaniel's judgement, are you not?" |

Medran and Vedgar reached the door leading to the room with Fizban Dantares just as mage lord Solo Fryysen caught up with them. "Lord Fryysen," Vedgar lifted his eyebrow in surprise. Solo Fryysen was about to brush past both Vedgar and Medran but then turned sharply towards Vedgar. "I think this is matters for members of the Council Vedgar," Solo said, clearly showing that he was expecting Vedgar to back away. "The Council do not work properly anymore Solo," Vedgar responded with irritation. "If you say so," Solo turned to Medran and gestured towards the door. "Will you lead the way? If you have talked to him, he will most likely trust you more than us. So you should enter first." |

Fizban Dantares sat up in the bed. The people serving in the Sanctuary had given him some clothing, a white robed used by the novices in their halls. "Please do," he simply said. Vedgar and Fryysen entered. Both stopped on the other end of the room, watching Dantares with grave eyes, Fryysen on head taller than Vedgar. "What a astonishing appearance," Fryysen remarked. There was disdain in his voice. Vedgar limped forward across his floor towards Dantares. Fryysen turned to Medran and asked, "Did he look like this when you found him?" Medran pull forth a chair from beneath the desk. He sat down in front of the bed. He frowned as he looked at Dantares, there was indeed something familiar about this mans face. He had certainly seen him somewhere, or someone who looked much like him. "Who are you?" Vedgar asked. |

Fizban Dantares hesitated, he suddenly felt very uneasy. The look from the mage lord scared him, it felt like he was being studied. "My name is Fizban Dantares," he finally answered. "That is all I know." Vedgar nodded, "My name is Nilen Vedgar. I am a mage and will try to help you, whatever the cause of your lack of memory is. Have you slept lately? Have the people in this place given you food and water?" Fryysen nodded though he turned his face towards Dantares on the bed. He spoke with a low voice to Medran, "Where did you find him? I heard on the lower levels, but where exactly?" |

Mordus arrived at the chamber doors and made sure to drape some of his cloak over his blade. The jurors might get the wrong idea after all. He walked in a few steps and soon orientated towards a seat at the back. There he sat. Waiting for the rest of the rabble. |

James walked into the courtroom accompanied by Rebecca holding his arm. She looked around at the people beginning to gather for the trial and whispered, "This is a big deal." James nodded. "Apparently," he said. He knew very little of the details of what had supposedly happened on the march, other than that Nathaniel Drakkon, a man he knew briefly at the beginning of Drathmor's invasion, was being tried for treason, which, if convicted, carried a penalty of death. Turning towards Rebecca, James kissed her and said, "Go back to the keep and stay with Lady Aldron." Rebecca nodded and then left. James was more and more concerned about her these days, not knowing exactly what was going on in Weissland or even in Asulien. So many things were in motion, but he could not take his mind off of Rebecca and her safety, leaving him, at times, somewhat less than aware of things which did not directly affect him. Things such as the defense of the city he was fully attuned to, but others, such as the matters of the mage lords, he might as well have been oblivious to. Walking up to the row of seats on either side of Mordain, James asked, "Where do I sit?" |
